The original post mentions staroffice 7 giving microsoft a run for it's money. While being a linux user and advocate, lets no kid ourselves into believing that this statement even comes close. There are two apps that I have not been able to replace at all, Project and Visio don't have anything even close in Linux.

Until linux gets a better office suite, I am forced to do my project management and process layouts in windows. Dia sucks and Mr Project is another story in itself. So go ahead modd me down into hell, and attack me but until advancements are made in the area of office suite applications for linux, it will be limited.

  9. Deregulation is good, sometimes.. on Telecommunication Customer Service Worldwide · · Score: 1

Deregulaiton of the telecom industry has been a welcome change. Look at the old AT&T or Bell Atlantic, althought these were not government owned or ran, their sheer size and lack of competition was evident through their, "if you don't like it, go somewhere else" attitude, there was no other place to go. Telstra is in that very position right now. Being in control and owning of facilities that start-ups need gives them that AT&T power. Competition is being stifled by them, deregulation would force Telstra and the likes to lease lines and/or parts of their network to start-ups, promoting competitive pricing and alternatives. Remember regulated or not, these companies depend on the end-user (the customer) to pay the bills that power these networks.

I live in New Jersey (armpit of american) and the DMV (dept. of motor vehicles) was state run. It was the worst experience anyone could or should have to endure. Since the DMV has be privatized, I no longer have to sit there all day just to get a new picture license. Efficiency and customer service has improved greatly. Don't get me wrong, it could be better but there is always a start for change and improvement.

You are really clueless. Your point of view is so muddled. Microsoft has been selling inferior products for years. Most of it's claimed "features" have been around in the unix world for years. Scalability, flexibility, security, these words mean nothing in the Windows world. Take an objective non biased look at research data about linux and windows. Compare the two. Windows is to keep you dumb. The dumber the better. Linux takes an effort intially, but the reward is worth it. I am a former windows user. I am sick of my computer crashing, I hate the "blue-screen of death", but the thing I hate the most is losing my data! Windows will never again be used by me! Never!

But I am still calm, the point is I found a better operating system then windows. It's Linux.

I worked for Worldcom. It was the first job I got when I left school. Since I needed money bad, I took the job. But the interview should have been a clear sign that not only is it going to be a waste of time but also major stress for little money.

The best advice I can give you is, no matter what big company you will work for it's all the same. You are treated like shit and in the case of Worldcom, you will be just another number. If you don't do it, they will replace you in a heartbeat with someone that knows less then you, but they will make more money. It's not what you know, it's who you know and how well you kiss ass (if that's your thing).

I don't like to be taken advantage off, so any chance I got to screw with middle-management i took it. In the long run, I left that company because of shitty hours, poor pay, and the way management treats people like shit. Now i work for Lucent Technologies. Much better. But they have their problems too.

In a nutshell, no matter where u go, u will run into some bullshit. If u think u are gonna learn anything there, haha, u better think again, cause the talent that Worldcom has is horrible. How that company stays in business when the CEO used to be a gym teacher is a mystery.

  16. redundancy? very unlikely on Whatever Happened to Internet Redundancy? · · Score: 1

All of this talk about redundancy makes me laugh. Let me tell you why. I have been working for telecom companies for a while now, and it's amazing what the internet savy don't know. Most of the fiber in this country has been put in place by AT&T and all the Baby Bells. When the government broke up AT&T and forced it to lease it's pipes to MCI,Sprint, etc., it was great for the consumer and the Internet boom, cause we could get competative prices from different telecom providers. Here is the funny part. A start-up broadband provider will not have the cash to build it's own fiber network, it will lease it from the big boys(AT&T, Bell ATlantic, etc.). Any of you geeks and nerds know how much data goes across a single fiber? What about a system that uses DWDM (dense wave division multiplexing)? An OC-192 carries 129024 DSO (regular phone lines), 192 T3's. What about the back-bones that carry this from one city to another? When I worked for Worldcom and UUnet, I could walk into the node and by cutting 4 fibers I could bring down 1/2 million customer. The building was one city block in New York City. 15 floors packed with telecom companies and internet service providers( Rackspace.com, exodus.com, etc.) Now for that redundancy every one talks so much about. If a terrorist blew up that building, countless internet sites (located in NYC) would go down, phone service, cable tv, broadband. You name it. Having redundancy means not the fiber going into the building from 2 different locations, but the providers having 2 different IDENTICAL locations (mirrors). IF terrorists want to hurt us by fucking with the internet, all they have to to is cut the fiber backbones that interconnect us. Your precious internet can be taken down by a pissed of employee that works at AT&T. God loves stupid people because there are some many of you!! kech
