  1. Professor's Own Books on Open-Source College Textbooks Gaining Mindshare · · Score: 1

My favorite were the 3-4 classes I took where the professor had written their own text, and obviously choose to use it for the class. They also edited it every year (the worst was one that contained several folklore tales from around the world, and he'd change out 1 or 2 stories every year) so you couldn't sell the $75 thing, and obviously couldn't buy used ones.

Are they put on a neighborhood watch list and have to go around announcing themselves to their neighbors? Why are sex offenders treated so harshly after prison? I'm not trying to troll or anything, I am really wondering why they are the targets so much. Are they the most likely group to repeat their crimes? What about drug dealers or carjackers? Bank robbers?

  9. Need more drivers on Should Linux Use Proprietary Drivers? · · Score: 1

One of the reasons I don't switch to Linux is the lack of drivers for some of my hardware. Sure, I could limit my choices of future hardware to only what's supported by Linux, but I don't want to be limited. Plus I like to hink of Linux as allowing me to do more and be less restrictive.

While open source drivers would be sweet, having closed drivers would be ok in my book if it opened up more hardware for the OS.

I remember trying to get WiFi working on my laptop under Linux, and what a huge, huge pain in the ass it was. I had a sort of off-brand card, and I managed to get it to turn on, and detect a couple hotspots, but I was never able to connect and use the 'net. I tried for days to get it to work, and did use ndiswrapper, but I just couldn't find good info on how to have it scan and connect, even using some of the more automatic tools. Yes, I understand that Linux is still more for power users, but when you have to spend 2-3 days to get wi-fi up and running, vs 3 min with Windows, its hard to convince people to give it a try.

Hardware drivers and setup is still a pain in the ass too. I have FC3 on my desktop and have yet to get the sound working. Mostly that is "my fault" for using my ATI chipset's onboard sound, which ALSA seems to hate, but even getting to the point where I could try some potential solutions was a days long ordeal. There doesn't appear to be anything like "run this little file, which will install the driver, and everything will be shiny" in the linux world, for good or bad. I would classify having to reboot back into windows to watch a video clip to be bad, however.

I dunno. Most of the movies I go to see are rated R, and thus don't have children in the audience. But, they all have had annoying clumps of adults that talk for the entire film. Its gotten so bad that I only ever go to the "big" movies anymore. Ones that loose something when they move to DVD. Episode 3, LotR, and I'll see Serenity. But overall its an unplesant experience to go to the theater.
The cell phone thing is annoying, of course. I remember when I went to see Fellowship of the Ring that someone's phone went off FIVE TIMES before they figured out that it was theirs. Obviously, after the 2nd time the audience was out for blood. If someone else's phone goes off, check to make sure yours is on viberate. It's really not that hard.

Well, with the open SDK, it would seem possible that you could have it react to your own events, such as a window gaining focus or an app starting. The app keys might both start the app and switch the keyboard layout.

It would also be cool to hack it to do nifty effects. How about changing the keys' background color to service as a UV meter thought a WinAmp plugin? Or have the num pad act as a little info center when not in use, with little graphs for cpu temp, usage, etc. Have the F key row flash when an email arrives, or have it switch Scroll Lock to "read new mail."

But it is true that once you work with an app long enough you learn the shortcuts without visual aids. But would make learning and adding new shortcuts or complex commands (entire scripts) pretty trivial.

Very interesting, and I am hearing quotes of $200-300 as the target price. Expensive, but might be worth it if you can make it do enough.

I recently put FC3 on my Viao 505FX, a Pentium 266 laptop. I am currently in the process of tweaking the boot process, as when I first started it it would take about 5 min to get to the login screen. Far too long if I get to class late or whatnot. By removing things from the boot process (I don't need it to look for SCSI drives, as its a laptop, nor do I need it to look for new hardware) I got it down to about 3 and a half minutes. Still, I hope to make it even faster.

I do want to keep X, but I have gone with XFCE over Gnome, as it seems to be faster, I need wi-fi, but the only sever I need is samba. Does anyone have some suggestions or links to sites about how I can speed things up even more? I still think there are probably a lot of things I can pull out of the sequence, but as I an pretty new to Linux I need a little help on finding where all that stuff is. I don't really worry about trashing the install, there is nothing important on it that isn't backed up somewhere else, so any sort of "you may want to give this a try" type of suggestions are welcome.
