Right... but by that logic, because vi exists, there's absolutely no reason to use emacs, pico, or any of the other *ahem* full-figured editors... and we all know what the community thinks about -that-.
Yes, I'm superficial. I decide on my desktop environment based on how fuzzy it makes me feel inside when I look at it. If you're running 3.0 or one of its RCs, post a screenshot!
You, my friend, are a blessing to netadmins everywhere. =) I work at a small hosting company which shall remain anonymous, and as such, the net/system admins are also the first level of tech support.
While that -really- makes our clients happy, it naturally gets a little frustrating for us. I just wish they'd understand that "if you'd stop talking to me, i could fix it" really isn't an affront to them, but a suggestion for the well-being of their server (which, 8 times out of 10, they just broke).
Ahh, yes. I got one of those from an Atlantic book store way back when. "Unlimited Access for one month", read the front of the box. Approximately one month plus the time it takes to mail a bill later, I was presented with a $1000 bill for what added up to almost a full month of connection time. Thankfully, I was a minor at the time, and my parents were able to hold this over the company's head (cerf.net, iirc).
You definitely want the room to have its own power feed and air conditioning unit. 30 IBM servers going full-tilt, relying on your building's circuits and air conditioning isn't the wisest of choices. =)
I'm really curious about Macs, what with all the OS X hype and all... I'd love to try out OS X to see what the buzz is all about, but I'm afraid I'll keep trying to click my nonexistant right mouse button and run screaming into the night. I guess what I'm trying to ask here is: What kind of machine do I need to run OS X and have it be fairly responsive? After all, if I don't like it, I can always use another Linux box. =)
You know, I've been using Linux for about four years now, and I still have no idea what POSIX is. Anyone care to risk being modded off-topic to explain? =)
Seeing a title like this, aiming a particular language at a particular discipline makes me flash back to the college days (last year) where the engineering classes all used fortran. God forbid, if perl gets outdated in another few years, are all the Biologists in the world going to lock themselves into a dead language like those stuffy engineers?
I'm working on it. It's patent application #1049482713, entitled 'Applying still images to a thin polymer film and displaying them in rapid succession to create the illusion of motion'. I think I'm on to something here, guys!
So, you basically give up real life to become a player in this game, which would eventually evolve to the point where you could buy a game (in the game) that would become your new life...
Step 1. Patent ...
Step 2.
Step 3. Profit!

BGP! If our UUNet link goes down, we might drop a couple of packets, but we're instantly flipped over to our backup provider.
http://urchin.com/ - seriously, we've used it for a while now, and it looks great and can report on just about anything.
Yeah... debian's going to scramble, all right. Gnome2 will make it into debian just in time to be deprecated. =)
Vast amounts of water ice are present on mars
In other news: Rita's, the popular italian water ice chain has announced its sponsorship of the first manned mission to mars.
True, but that 5% would be equivalent to a couple of pretty beefy desktop machines in this case. =)
Well, then... I'll have to try it out.
...just as soon as it makes its way into Woody.

mmmm... wall-sized counterstrike.

No, I'm pretty sure that in this context it's a Harry Potter reference.
Nah, that was a typo. It should've read "holy".

...and is it just me, or are ads starting to appear on comment pages?
...and they'll just invent a better spider.

The article leads me to believe they haven't even started the migration of these three servers that supposedly run the bulk of their business.
Oracle, to the best of my knowledge, does one hell of a lot of business.
Summer? Certainly not of this year...
More like gigabit intranet. Once you hit the bottleneck, you're moving at the same speed as the rest of us. =)

...because having their site slashdotted surely can't be good for sales. =)
