    well, the pentium classic made it all the way up to 200mhz, I think.

    The thing is, AMD always comes out with one system about a year before intel reaches the same version number. the k5 beat the 468, but it pailed against the pentium. The k6 beat the shit out of a pentium, but pailed in most cases against a p6 core. This k7 looks to kick a p6's ass, but I'd be willing to bet that the next get p7's will probably beat it...

    How about revealing a ciphertext, plaintext and the algorithm and having people try to crack the key?

    well, that would basicaly give the prize to whoever had enough CPU power to crack the code the ability to. and it would make for a pretty dull contest IMO.

    You're second idea is a little better, but I think there going for somthing a little more 'historic', similar to the cyphers used before we figured out how to make unbreakable crypto (without quantum computers...). This is designed to be something that anyone can crack, not just the propritors of distrobuted.net.

    anyway, who knows what the 'clues' are going to be : )

    I also realize that yes, commercial apps can be cracked... but hardly anyone has the source code for those...

    yes, but some people do... personally, if I needed something to be really secure I'd probably use open source, or develop my own. Its not without precedent for commercial apps and OSs to have backdoors.

    The truth is, there's nothing Wrong with sex at all, what would happen to little Johny if he saw two women making out? Oh, No!! he might become aroused!!! AHHHH.

    I mean, come on what does porn actualy *do* to kids? nothing!

    I personaly don't think that images of violance do any harm to little kids ether, but some do. However, I really doubt it's less damaging then sexual content.

    The idea behind free software, is that when you come acrost a problem, if a solution dosn't exsist, you can code it.

    Perhaps this is such a time. Someone needs to write it first, why not you? Maybe you can convince the "powers that be" to fund it?

    out of the system, I belive he gets money out ocasionaly, and he's made donations to his 'fund' in values of several billion.

    I'm sure there's an upper limit, but he's legaly bound and can't remove all of it with out getting permission from the SEC

    Didn't you read the salon artical about the Columbine killers? they wern't into the 'goth' scene at all, ifact they hated marilon manson and the whole goth scene. Just like you.

    The music someone listens to has no effect on my opninon of them, unless it was LFO, Len, the Backstreet boys, or any of that other MTV bulshit. I wouldn't be afraid of them, I would just think there stupid.

    Just beacuse some psyco likes the same kind of music as someone else, dosn't mean that all the people who like that music are psychos.

    DevStudio is a bloody good piece of software for developing anything.

    heh, I use it to make websites. Just make a 'project' with all you're HTML docs, makes navigation easy, and the syntax highlighting kicks ass.

    I don't think he said NT was the best "GAMING" platform, just that it was the best to develop for. there's a big diffrence.

    Things like DirectX don't really make games better, they just make it easyer for to write games. as far as what the 'best platfor for gaming' will always be the platform most used by gamers. wether its amega, linux, or MacOS, the platorm with the most gamers will have the best games.

    John Carmak is know for his candor, and If he says somthing, I'll belive it. If were to say somthing to the effect of "NT is better, but I use Linux beacuse I feel microsoft is evil" I would still respect him, but if he were to just FUD-over microsoft, I would not.

    Also, it's posible that other people may not share the same ethical values that you do. The same person who dosn't whare Nikes beacuse of child labor consurns might still by microsoft products beacuse they just don't really care. I mean, microsoft can never take linux away from us. 'sucky software' is hardly Life altering issue, especialy when exsperance would lead you to belive that it's not really that sucky.

    And, it kind of makes sense, doesn't it, that with Microsoft's concern for things like DirectX on NT (Yes, I realize Quake uses OpenGL), that NT *would* make a good development platform for *games*?

    Just a minor correction, but DirectX is a whole sute of game-centric toolkits. Though Quake2/3 uses OpenGL, it also uses DirectX for other things, such as Music and audio, as well as imput (though I'm it will work without those things installed)

    what John Carmak dosn't use is the 3d portion of DirectX, Direct3d (everything's DirectSomthing, directimput for imput, directsound for sound, ect). Even if most games use OpenGL, windows boxen will still need the rest of DX if they want to use the latest games.

    Just so there's no confusion, Wozniak did indeed drive the work on the Apple machines, but had limited interaction with the Macintosh project.

    So what? the above post didn't even mention apple computer. The apple 1 and II were revolutionary in terms of technology. The Mac just had a pretty GUI...

    what about william gibson, he just relised a new book. Its sort of like a sequal to Iduro and some other book he wrote. I've read Iduro and it was great.
