Seriously, I know a few people with prefabs (off site construction, or some other PC phrase exists) and they seem okay. Watching the home shows, it seems they can do amazing things these days. While you can't get a true 'custom' home (also unlikely as most contractors only want to build from one set of cookie cutter prints) there is enough variability in modules that if you find a large manufacturer, you're unlikely not to be satisfied.

There, think that second paragraph might be serious enough to avoid a downmod as a 'troll' for what is really a 'funny', 'insightful', and 'intelligent' joke in the first.

  13. Re:Not built to last on Dealing with Outdated Automotive Software? · · Score: 1

A Rambler? Oh joy. Lovely, well handling, safe vehicle. The average guy can do work on modern cars. It does require a bit of education. It probably helps to have a code reader and a shop manual, but is $200 for the pair too much to ask? IMHO, not if the trade off is traction control, ABS, air bags, AC, 28 mpg highway, and net horsepower from a V6 that is likely much higher than the net on even an S/C Rambler (been reading Hot Rod and Car Craft since I was 15, so I know the lingo and even the obscure models.)

The problem with getting information open sourced on cars is a bipartite unwillingness on the parts of environmentalists and business interests. Business people want you to get rid of that 3+ year old car and buy a new one. How much does AMC/Chrysler/DMX make off your Rambler? How much off of a PT Cruiser? The greens don't understand that constructing a new electric car is going to likely use more resources and damage the environment more than keeping your Rambler in a top state of tune. If you must drive a car, it has to be a weenie eco-mobile. So they won't do anything to help you convince government that 'open sourcing the engine management code and protocols (the latter being probably at least as important as the former) would help stay in emissions compliance'.

Reverse engineering shouldn't be illegal (but as it is emissions related, who knows) as one is only reverse engineering the controls to 'ensure compatibility' with some new part. (Although you are no doubt aware of CARB mandates that cars must contain original equipment or original appearing equipment, even if the proposed replacement is a better performer. Ahh, government logic.)

Anyway, I plan on putting a 3.0 from a Taurus into my Mystique. Same concept as putting a big V8 from a Galaxie into a Falcon. And not much harder. (Easier, as I don't need to massage the wheelwells or firewall with a sledge.)

Go to any Advance, Super Trak, or Pep Boys (or NAPA, Mac, or Snap-On) and you should be able to find a universal reader, or a reader for your car. There's no reason your dealer can't do likewise. In addition, your local German car specialty shop should have several of these lying around.

Further, auto computers do only a few rudimentary things. Control spark advance and fuel delivery curves. I'd have to question why the dealer has mechanics who can't make a decent determination without relying on the crutch of the computer.

  21. Don't Blame Reality TV on Gaming Communities Cause Of TV Ratings Decline? · · Score: 1, Insightful

Don't blame reality TV for falling ratings. First, the offerings are back down to a reasonable number. Fear Factor, Survivor, and Joe Millionaire are the only ones I can think of running on the networks. After the glut two years ago, we are seeing a return of comedies and dramas, big time. I can't remember when I've seen as many new dramas as have come out this year.

As others have pointed out, blame the quality of the programming. Many of those new shows have already been tossed in the dumpster. Older shows are coasting (South Park's RIAA episode was okay, crab people was lame) or haven't started yet (I'm looking at you, Fox). There are also few shows with a hook to get you watching week to week. Paramount won't force Star Trek to be anything other than episodic in nature. CSI and the bunch have followed the Law and Order thing. There's absolutely no reason for me to make sure I watch it next week.

Maybe something can be learned from 24 and Sopranos. Each tells a compelling story with week to week continuity. I think Sopranos succeeds better at bringing in new viewers, but can't be 100% sure without seeing the ratings trends.

Unfortunately, much of this is nothing new. The networks have spent the past 50+ years churning out variations on the same 'hot theme'. (Even back in the radio days, there were several variations on Gunsmoke, Paladin, Matt Dillon, etc, etc.) But when radio went to TV, the same people stayed in charge, so they didn't bitch (as much) about losing radioshare. What is different is that people have an alternative that isn't owned by NBC or CBS (old Westinghouse, FWIW). You better believe that if NBC owned Rockstar Studios or if CBS owned Sony Online Ent. they wouldn't be complaining. As much.

There is also the issue where the networks attempt to appeal to all people. This insures that they appeal to almost none. The cable stations can afford to be niche marketed. ABC et al. find themselves trying to sell Ford Tauruses while Discovery, Comedy Central, etc. can sell PT Cruisers and New Beetles. Sure, you may hate 'em, but somebody loves 'em enough to keep them in business and doing well.

So, all you upmodded reality TV haters, try and expand your vision a little bit. The situation is hardly as simple as that.
