But I don't have any money :( So I'm using a webcam and TV card I bought for $30 6 years ago... it does the job although I think I'll move the camera out to that archway you can see, so I get better pictures next time.

Recently I got given a crappy old laptop, no battery or drives and the HDD was stuffed. I had a spare drive, it runs off 12v just fine. I've added a 802.11b card and USB webcam and it lives in my van now. I just need to add config to 'motion' so that it'll watch and store the output of the van camera as well as the mailbox one. Total cost of my security system is still almost-nothing.

This is something my friend is very interesed in.

It's quite hard for a blind person to tell eg "Catfood" vs "baked beans" or "Chicken noodles" vs "Extra-hot Thai noodles". The plan was that his wife would scan each product as she puts them away and record a short audio description. Verne can then scan cans and packets while she's at work and sort out a non-spicy, non-catfood lunch for himself.

I wrote a script for this, but then the computer had an accident so I'm going to have to write it all over again :(

There's a Windows (2k/xp) Firewall on sourceforge, but it's 'not quite there yet' and IMHO neither is clamav..

. it doesn't detect polymorphic viruses. I'm not sure how common these are, but it disturbs me that there's a whole class of viruses clamav can't see.

. it doesn't scan on demand. Every other virus scanner does this by default.

. Although there's a plugin for Outlook, that's the only mailer supported. Most people use OE. many use Thunderbird or Mozilla and while these are resistant to most viruses users can still run attachments if they try hard enough. Clamwin doesn't intercept and scan pop3 or imap yet.

If you want a Free firewall for your windows box dig out an old p133 and install one of the many 'linux firewall' projects. If you want Free virus scanning for your windows box install procmail on this linux firewall and dump all the file-types that only ever get used by viruses (.scr, .cpl, etc) then scan the remaining mail with clamav just in case..
