Most people (myself included) don't encounter the seriously hearing impaired in our daily lives, and never have had a good enough reason (that is, enough motivation, however wrong that may be) to learn ASL. I do, however, speak Spanish because I encounter that every day, it being the second language of the US. My grandmother is hearing impaired, but doesn't know ASL - she just uses a hearing aid. I suppose it would help, but since she can speak English it's not necessary - I just have to talk a little louder, towards her left ear.

I don't mean to be offensive...I'm just explaining the 'ridiculous'-ness of my impairment.

    Sounds completely bass-ackwards to me.
    Remember innocent before proven guilty?

Restricting our freedom to make backup copies (because of the abuse of minorities - remember, the majority don't have a clue about copy-protection) in order to protect the freedom of corporations. Restricting our freedom to create our own ISPs and share information freely - again, to protect the 'freedom' of corporations to make a profit.

I have just turned 18 and I am trying to educate myself such that when elections come around, I can change the world with my knowledge. Remember that YOUR VOTE COUNTS and EDUCATE your friends so that they know how important their freedoms are - that they take for granted - and how much power they have: voting, writing local politicians, etc.

The dance music scene in my area (central TX) was just the subject of abuse of freedom by some local politicians, and it really hit home how much I should be doing - not just being an armchair activist. I challenge you ALL to put your $ where your mouth is. If even half of us (Slashdot readers) were to fight openly and strongly for what we rant about daily, I think the difference would be monumental. 11. The many flavors of electronic music on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 2, Informative

Defining a 'best' in electronic music is like defining a 'best' in rock....Electronic music has the most sub-genres of any music type I know of. Nevertheless, there are the major categories, but keep in mind that often the most talented artists do not confine their music to one type alone.

The most well known word for electronic music is probably techno, however techno != electronic, rather it is a type of electronic popular earlier in the 90s, while electronic music was growing more mainstream. You'll most often hear (for subgenres):

    Techno | Trance | Drum n' Bass | Breakbeat | House | Jungle | Industrial | Ambient | Chill

often used with the modifiers 'hard', 'acid', or 'progressive' as in hard house, or progressive trance. In a lot of ways, these are self-explanatory...hard means that the music is rougher, and is usually faster paced; drum n bass consists of drum beats and heavy basslines.

Everyone here will try to tell you the best artist to listen to....but I can tell you for sure that I know no two people with the same taste in electronic music. You really have to discover for yourself the kind that interests you most. I suggest listening to some generic online radio if you want to know the mainstream electronica, most of which is a carryover from europe's tech-pop eurotrash trance. That's where you'll find the names most people will refer to you.

However, the best way to discover electronic music is to support your local scene. I would list true local websites, but being low-budget community supported as they are, I wouldn't subject them to the bandwidth of the slightest slashdotting. You can, however, find your nearest real record store (good electronic comes out on analog lps for real djs) and they will be happy to direct you to flyers and websites informing you of local happenings. Go out and hear some of your best local djs, and truly experience the music for yourself (many djs of different styles will play in the same night) - that will be the fastest path to knowing your interests. Also, once you find a dj you like, find out his/her influences, and that will point you to some excellent (lesser-known?) artists.

Some of the best cuts are the hardest to find, but there's a ton of great music out there. I wish you (all) luck, and PLUR!!

  12. It's almost as combined as it gets on Will Instant Messaging Ever Unite? · · Score: 1

Trillian has one (1) buddy list for all its buddies, on every network. When you talk to different single buddies, you open separate windows for each buddy (the same as every other client). You can chat with multiple buddies in the same window, as long as they're on the same service (also same). It has a neat feature called a 'container', which lets you put all your IM windows in one big window (like Opera, or Word 6), so they become client windows. There's a mini-taskbar at the bottom of the 'container' which highlights the name of the IM that has been updated, but not yet seen.

It can't combine chats between different protocols, but in order to do that, your computer would have to translate and relay the IMs, like some sort of server itself, so it's clear why that isn't a feature. Trillian still looks like the best option out of the other IM progs to me....is that enough for you to switch back?

  13. Trillian is the best! on Will Instant Messaging Ever Unite? · · Score: 1

I use Trillian daily, it includes AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC all in one. I switched over about 6 months ago and haven't had a second thought since. It has never crashed on me, or conflicted with any other running programs (Unlike what AIM has done since the day I installed it). My friends, sick of AIM crashing and having to run MSN and AIM all the time, switched over as soon as I explained it to them. The NO ADS and the simplicity were very attractive to them (important, since they are the average joe user, unlike me) and they haven't had any trouble using it...plus it's extremely nice to have standard buttons (i.e. filesend) for every buddy, even though then send process is (under the skin) different for each messenger.

It includes every feature I've wanted in a messenger, and left out those that I didn't. Plus, I love the idea of not supporting AOL or Microsoft's low-quality, overdone, irritating products.

  14. You have a point...kinda on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

Aphex Twin is an exceptional artist, but I'm not sure his inspiration came from his room...it was from his complex mind. That works well in Aphex Twin's case, but for Moby, his isolation only led to his egotism flowing out - I was kinda saying, if Moby got out and looked around, and got some second opinions, he wouldn't be wondering what happened to the sales of his self-proclaimed hit record.

  15. An excuse is the truth! on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

Moby's latest album isn't that good. It's basically Play, his last album, but different songs. Now, I thought Play was a good album at the time, but after every song on the album was licensed to advertisements, and Moby put out Play: Side B, I got pretty sick of the songs. A lot of what made Play popular was the way he mixed old-school soul together with big beats and new electronica. That gimmick doesn't work twice, but that same kind of sound seems like what he's trying to produce in 18. (FYI: if 18 sounds like it was made in a box, that's because it was - completely created in a windowless small room in his flat - doesn't sound like a fountain of inspiration to me...)

I am a serious electronica fan, and so are many of my friends...if we really like an album, we buy it - mp3 quality is nowhere near CD quality, and DJs buy albums on wax (real ones, anyway). I doubt a lot of clubs/DJs are buying 18 yet, for 1) its quality and 2) he's only released one single (in the States, anyway) that hasn't been doing anywhere near as well as Play's hits (which is important, because that's what he's using for comparison.) Moby is old news (can we say 96?) and no artist should expect guaranteed sales. That kind of super-ego-centric attitude is exactly what doesn't sell albums.

  16. Buy a 'Barebones' System!! on Home-Built vs. Store-Bought PCs · · Score: 1

I'm looking into building a PC myself, and have found that the cheapest way by far is to buy what's called a 'Barebones' system. On pricewatch they are initially listed as 'Kits' but after following the link you seem them called 'Barebones', as all the online super-deal-megastores do. The system will include at least a case, power supply, motherboard, processor, memory, hard drive and 3 1/2, and some flavor of a ROM drive. It can be configured with basically any standard hardware (and occasionally peripherals) that you want...but they never require you to order an M$ OS (or any OS).

With a barebones system, you get the best of all worlds: when you go to order one (at a quality site), you are linked to a form where you customize your barebones PC like you would a DELL, except with many more options.

All of this cuts down the price...plus, since they're building it for you, they get the deal on the hardware for buying bulk, which is passed onto you. Also, they do what's called 'burn-in', which is where they hook up their software-preloaded-testing-hard-drive and make sure it all works, and then as a guarantee they'll tack on a 1 or 2 year warranty (often upgradable). This way, you don't have to put it together yourself and wonder what's not working, and watch all the tech-support point fingers at each other yelling 'it's-not-me-it's-the-other-part'.

If you look a little, you can find a barebones package that can be configured with all the components you wanted anyway, and certainly with any processor. (Be careful though, the default choices on the form often are cheaper in make, but not in price).

I am personally using AccessMicro to build my system. I'm getting an Athlon XP 2100+, Gigabyte KT333 ATA133 RAID-enabled, 512MB DDR 333MHz DDRAM, plus CD-RW, DVD-ROM, 40GB hard drive, floppy, keyboard and mouse, and a sweet, sweet case for under a grand, easy (NOTE: IAN Affiliated). I couldn't have found but a couple parts I want cheaper, and I'll just install those myself...I'm telling you, this is the way to go, save yourself some time.

  20. Infoworld is reporting on a *different virus* on Even Flash Can Get Viruses · · Score: 5, Informative

It appears that the articles have not been read carefully. After comparing the the three, there are two Flash virii being spread around.

    Virus 1 (Conrad's submission) - SWF/LFM.926
The virus, dubbed SWF/LFM.926...must be downloaded manually and cannot spread...over e-mail. (Yahoo)
...and after being run, infects other Flash movies while displaying the message "Loading Flash-Movie...". The virus exploits the scriptability of Macromedia Flash to generate a file V.COM, which gets executed afterwards without confirmation. (German trans. - thanks entrox!!)

    Virus 2 (bdavenport's infoworld submission) - Creative.exe
The virus...arrives in an e-mail bearing the subject line, "A great shockwave flash movie."
The worm, which first appeared Thursday, is delivered to users in the form of an e-mail attachment that appears to be a Shockwave Media Player. When a user tries to view the movie attachment, the worm sends a copy of itself to all people in the address book of the user's Microsoft Outlook e-mail program, potentially clogging e-mail networks.
One reason the Creative.exe virus may be spreading so quickly is that it uses the Shockwave Flash movie icon.
    (Infoworld)
...but if you check the date of the Infoworld article, it's December 1, 2000.

    From Symantec:

    Discovered on: November 30, 2000
Due to a recent decrease in world-wide infections of this worm, SARC has decreased the threat level of this worm to 3 and removed it from the Top Threats list.

W32.Prolin.Worm uses Microsoft Outlook to email a copy of itself to everyone in the Outlook address book. The worm moves all .mp3, .jpg, and .zip files to the root folder. It renames each of these files and appends the following text to the extension of each file:

    change atleast now to LINUX

Also Known As: TROJ_SHOCKWAVE.A, CREATIVE, TROJ_PROLIN.A

So...Creative.exe is NOT a flash virus, and is old news, unrelated to SWF/LFM-926.
