People talk about Apple taking MS market share, about OS X getting viruses, about the Steve releasing OS X for generic Intel boxes.
None of those things will EVER happen. Apple has come to understand you can run quite a profitible biz by having 7-10% marketshare. It even helps them because the evil virus authors don't write viruses due to it's market share compared to windows(one of the reasons). The OS runs well (one of the main reasons) because Apple controls the hardware it runs on, as opposed to MS having to deal with generic Asian motherboards and horribly written driver software by 3rd party vendors.
The Steve never wanted to become Bill Gates. Bill Gates and Microsoft has come to accept Apple because it does not effect them. Microsoft could wait another 5 years to release Vista and it would still be bought by 90% of the planet who runs PC's.
BOINC allows you to allocate all, some or none of your cycles to any of a number of projects. He's quite welcome NOT to contribute to seti@home if he does not want to, but to dump on other people because of THEIR beliefs don't match his beliefs is well.. goofy.
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, BUT just because I can't PROVE flying pink elephants don't exist does not mean that they DO exist.
Basically you can say absolutely NOTHING about which you have no information. So far we have no data to even HINT on the probability of intelligent extraterrestrial life (UFO's are evidence, but inconclusive). We are looking for life similar to us (cause that's all we know). The relative worthiness of looking for ET or Flying pink elephants has to do if you have a theory that you might FIND them. Just because he does not agree with other's theories on ET signals does not mean YOUR theory is any less credible.
I say...if you think you might find ET and can get others to join you. GREAT! If not...oh well.
Although I expect laws to be passed to ban this or that (P2P, etc), and it's easy to buy off the politicians with $$$ for re-election or in other countries just plain bribing I don't see much enforcement (except for selective large perpetrators). Why? It costs $$$ to enforce.
Governments pass laws all the time and then don't put for the effort to REALLY enforce them (immigration in the U.S. for example). I expect anything to do with file-sharing to be the same.
Take the RIAA and the MPAA. How many people are downloading movies and music vs how many people they are actually prosecuting? Percentage wise of the violators we are talking VERY little. It's all about LOOKING like you are doing something, not actually enforcing or getting rid of the problem. Software piracy is the same way.
We passed the point LONG ago in world where the government can break into your house rifle your things and find something to throw you in jail with.....copied tape? where is the master CD? Can't find it...Ooooo..that's 5 years and 20,000 dollars. That rifle in your basement, is it registered? No? Antique? Doesnt matter..off to jail you go. Speeding? What's that? It's stupid that the speed limit is 25 mph and everybody else is going 50? Tell that to the judge, I'm throwing you in jail for reckless driving.
No government official is going to enforce a law that hurts his/her voters or campaign contributors. If many of them are at home downloading MP3's they will turn a blind eye, But you can bet if it HELPS them in any way they will enforce.

- Government exiles microsoft documents
As from September 2008 its all digital office documents of the federal government Odf-bestanden. ODF or open document Format are a file format for office documents that previous month officially were accepted by the international standard organisation ISO. It opens, standard '', which by software developers at discretion can be used to develop applications. ODF are with that a potential competitor for its own file formats which the softwarereus Microsoft use in its office software Microsoft Office. The federal council of ministers took last Friday the radical make decision Odf-standaard as from September 2008 obliges at all federal public authorities. One years rather all services must be already able Odf-documenten read. According to the profession booklet IT professional Belgium the first country is in the world that such a step does, and this way de facto the use of among others the microsoft formats prohibits. Toch the door for Microsoft is entirely not yet dense. The company stands now for the choice: or are programmes for Odf-bestanden open it, or it itself develops an open standard which can be used beside ODF. The most important candidate for that is it open XML developed by Microsoft. But according to peter Strickx, the agent for software-cog-softwarestandaarden at the federal government, open XML must become for that firstly recognised officially and must voldoene software applications be there which support the format. According to microsoft spokesman frank the Graeve are also considered supporting ODF in Office-software.
How do you measure the amount of Evil somebody has or has not created? One could argue that because of the way Bill did his business we might be 10 or even 15 years behind where we SHOULD be as a result of having a normal competitive landscape without the Intel/MS duopoly of the 90's.
What might have happened? Who knows, maybe somebody might of been able to invent the cure to Cancer 10 years ago instead of next year? How many lives might that have saved?
Of course you could invent anything when it comes to WHAT IF's. But my point is, we'll never know how much Evil or Good his biz practices were because you don't know what would of happened had he not been there.
That's the beauty of monopolistic behaviour. Those projects that never got off of the ground because of the monopoly can defend themselves..because they never got off the ground.
Without a pressing need, an organization will not deploy it. It's as simple as that. DOD has specific needs that IPv6 will help them address.
Comcast is a good example of how IPv6 will be deployed. As needed, only when needed (there is another message here with a PDF from comcast at nanog). Organizations in the Far east have a need because they have plans to stick an address on every cell phone, and device within china, Japan, Korea, ect. The ammount of space AVAILABLE for them to grab is inadequate for these purposes.
At the moment I just can't think of anything that would really move v6 adoption forward (in the States)
Internet2 (the network that connects most Universities in the U.S. and peers with other research networks) has been IPv6 for YEARS.
I REALLY wish the Azureus and utorrent people would build IPv6 capability into their clients. Many IPv6 equipment has not had the traffic to stress test the software. v6 bittorrent capability on I2 would generate LOTS of traffic so v6 vendors can see how their equipment handles it.
There is a couple of clients (not major ones) that report having v6 in them, but most people don't use them.
This debate is like many other debates in the U.S. (and elsewhere). Each side stakes out their position as religious conviction and then proceeds to refuse to consider any critical dialog. It usually ends up with people talking over one another and/or ad-hominem attacks.
The problem is people lack respect for other people's opinions. In colleges and universities there is a real pack mentality that attacks opposing viewpoints (within the University setting) as immoral and unworthy of disscussion.
Until and if we somehow get through this era so people can talk to each other rationally these types of important isses will NOT be resolved.
The only thing I hate worse than people who refuse to listen to rational argument are people who play devil's advocate to get a rise.
Something like that yea. BUT..unlike Trolltech they already have an installed base which is 90% of the market so they don't have to claw their way up the marketshare to get acceptance.
A prime example of a customer might be the military. They could use something like OpenBSD or LINUX or OS X but still develop with the windows API.
They could do the same thing with DirectX, open the API let gamers buy a copy of the API to install on other OS's (or let the OS Vendors license it).
Although I HATE giving advice to MS..here it goes.
1. Get out of the OS biz!
2. License the Windows API's and other protocols that have practically become de-facto standards to ANY os vendor that wants to use it in their OS. Charge a per/seat license that is similar to the cost of windows now.
In one fell swoop windows apps would still be what people use/develop (for the most part) and they would not have to worry about all the security headaches the OS has given them. They can make the same amount of money by charging the OS vendors. Linux vendors would give users the option of buying windows application compatibility and I'm sure Apple would as well.
I'm confused. Did'nt the U.S. Patent office or a Federal court recently rule in Apple's favor? If so how does an International Patent organization have the power to overule the U.S. court system?
We cannot support anonymous FTP or http
downloads. The reason for this is that we are required by the
conditions of our US export licenses to know who and where our customers
are.
Theo did'nt address this directly, except by complaining that he did not like the fact he believes they would give over personal information to the U.S. government.
If it's the law then the company has no choice. Screaming at the company because they refuse to ignore the law is futile.
If these companies (in the subject line) were really THAT concerned, Google could threaten to netblock ALL of verizons customers (ore redirect them to a page that explains the situation). Ebay could do the same thing and Microsoft could threaten to not license ANY more copies of ANY microsoft software to Verizon the company.
How many customers would scream bloody murder to Verizon if they could not access Ebay or Google. I'd think many. Telling Verizon you may not buy ANY more copies of Microsoft products could be VERY painful as well.
These of course are "nuclear" options, but if Verizon wants to do the extortion game, so can the other companies. Maybe Google should invoice Verizon for allowing their customers access to googles servers.
I agree with all of your points EXCEPT the non-admin user pont.
Mac users have been dealing with this for almost 6years (asking for your password for sudo rights). It's not a pain, it's worth not having your system files overwritten by spyware/viruses.
If Google, Microsoft and Ebay are so concerned why is none of this on their front page? If Google, Microsoft, Ebay and Yahoo threatened to net block the supporters of those bills how fast do you think the bill would die? VERY QUICKLY. What if Microsoft said to Verizon that we will no longer license any more copies of Windows to your organization if you continue to support this bill?
Any of these actions would kill this bill outright.
Anybody who decides to MARRY somebody they've never met before, ESPECIALLY if they are outside of driving distance is an idiot.
A "little" and I mean "little" common sense can go a LOOOOONG way. Most bogus profiles can be spotted a mile away. Also..anybody who is from Eastern Europe, Russia, is HOT and writes you an email that has non-specific information riddled through it can go in the trash.:)
Although multicast will scale up enough for one user to support millions. But..if the Backbone providers could get multicast streams of the video and then let ISP's pick up those feeds, then the ISP's could multicast them to their networks.
Thus providing nice bandwidth friendly video.....meanwhile back in the real world:(
The court has said in oh...3 or 4 rulings back to the 1950's (and from some VERY liberal courts) that free speech is NOT protected when a public employee talks openly about matters that are related to the person's official capacity.

People need to get a grip!
If you decide to report the actions of your manager to his direct superiors you CAN be fired if his supervisors decide you are WRONG! You are not protected from discipline just because you decided to say something.

If ANYBODY could say ANYTHING about their government job, no matter what that might be, while in their official capacity representing the government without being fired no matter what they are saying it would cause CHAOS!
I'm sure there are MANY government employees who have an opinion that something their agency is doing is wrong or illegal. Allowing people to accuse and criticize the agency they are working for without ANY consequences if they are wrong is goofy.
yes...the percentage is wrong. But you get the point.
