  1. MMOG roleplaying is number crunching on Coding and Roleplaying - Is There a Connection? · · Score: 1

People don't want to admit it. But roleplaying(as in D&D) as is today (along with Wargaming which roleplaying game from) is nothing more than a statistical simulation. People who enjoy "tweaking" numbers for efficiancy usually like to play roleplaying games. Especially where there are LOTS of numbers involved and trying to find the best combination of statistics.

People who code naturally like efficient systems. It's like debugging code to get the tightest, fastest executable.

It's how MMOG publishers like Blizzard and Lucasarts keep people addicted, there is always one more level, a gun with better stats, better shields ect...so you can get more money....so you can get better stats so you can kill something quicker...so you can get better stats....(I think you get the point)

Sure, there are some people who really do "roleplay" vs "rollplay" but the game designers KNOW that the latter brings in more players...er..um...number tweakers that is.

I would bet you'd see a completely different set of people playing a MMOG if NO stats were given to the players about themselves or others and no set formula (build in unkown randomness as in life) to situations.

I'm not holding my breath though

It's funny to see that the people who keep shaking their heads left and right when "IPv6" is mentioned are mainly ALL in the U.S. Fact: China, Japan, Korea and MUCH of Europe will move to IPv6 first...and much sooner no matter what the U.S thinks. Control is the issue, those moving to v6 see it as an opportunity to move away from having to call a U.S. organization to get address allocation. Also..since DNS becomes REALLY important with v6 (try to memorize IPv6 addressess..) Europe could use it as a means of setting up their own root DNS servers to take control of the future address space. Whoever has the DNS servers that people use will get control, and if Europe/Asia defines that first they will have control.

If the EU mandated that all ISP's move to IPv6 within a couple of years I can gaurantee you that the vendors would jump. In the short term Europeans would lose out to U.S. web sites, but I'd be willing to bet that companies here would be looking to get onto the EU "Net" anyway they could and as quickly as possible.
