I'm assuming this can only occur if you installed the virus infected material as root?
Nothing new here....if you install software as root from a compromised source and don't check the md5sums along with other precautions you put yourself at risk

I know there will be some out there that will yell big time at the suggestion of having other nations help out with this.
The Russians still have decent space capacity, and the Europeans have the technology to help as well.
If that's the case WHY did they start with an Email client? A web browser would of been much more useful since the majority of exploits come from that application.
A free fully featured web browser in JAVA would be great!
I've always thought that the best way for the MPAA/RIAA to kill bittorrent would be to break the protocol such that cheaters could leach without giving much back.
If you look at other systems where the amount leechers far outstrip people giving back the system pretty much gets bogged down.
Bram had always said his system works because every client is out for it's own interest. Researchers who have tried to "improve" BT usually have done something to break this model.
If I were the RIAA/MPAA I'd hire a bunch of crack programmers to try and create a "cheat" and then release the source code to that people would get to download with little or no uploading. That would effetively KILL many bittorrent swarms
You are right...but that has'nt stopped us from borrowing whatever we need curency wise from the Chinese for other purposes. So why would'nt it matter for another $100B for a space program? It's not like we are talking about real gold here...just promisary notes
What many people don't realize is that the internet effectively allows a small group of people that are worldwide to be effectively communicated to by an advertizer.
So...even though the world of multiplayer gaming may be a niche population, the net effectively increases it's value to advertizers because it's easier to reach them through common connections between consumers...in this case the common connection the game they all play.
The same population in the 80's playing a game would not be viable because of how spread out the players are over the world and how disconnected they are from each other.

Its obvious he was using the example of of repugnant material like Nazi membership and Mein Kamp to demonstrate that in the U.S. our freedoms keep the government from banning such material.
If you did'nt understand that from his text then you are an idiot and stupid as well.
The existence of a native OS X virus is like looking for a alien spacecraft...
Absence of evidence is NOT evidence of absence...BUT..just because I can't PROVE flying pink elephants don't exist does not mean that they DO in fact exist.
Thus far NO evidence exists for a Mac Virus. If you think one exists and want people to believe that people need to protect themselves from it...or Flying saucers with death rays then you need to have a credible theory that they exist and go looking for them.
If you don't find any...then it means you know absolutely NOTHING...since you can't authoritatively say ANYTHING about that which you have no evidence for.
So until somebody gives me a CREDIBLE theory as to why I need to get anti-virus protection for the Mac, I'll remain virus software free.
Thus far NOBODY has come up with a theory as to why I should get virus software NOW...only half-ass predictions about some future environment where Mac market share is MUCH higher.
All these are said when people talk about OS X viruses. In the almost 6 years since OS X has come out I have not found a single OS X specific virus. There have been rumors..but no virus.
Usually the argument is...
When the Mac gets larger market share....if the Mac had larger Market share....hackers would target OS X.
Next time somebody uses that argument ask them if they EXPECT that to actually happen...I asked somebody who made that argument "So you think OS X will grab a significant market share?"...his answer "Well...no..but.." my response > "So when will these viruses appear?"
Instead of theories about when viruses might come for the OS X, let's see some evidence! or at LEAST some real meat to back up a theory other than what might happen in the Magical future when things are different.
I could'nt find a zip version available. Does anybody know where it is. I'd love to try it out but really don't want to upgrade or uninstall my current stable firefox.
I find it funny how people who are Pro-BSD license vs GPL think they are somehow shielded from patent suits.
Just because you change from a GPL to a BSD license will not protect you. It's not just GPL licensed software that's in danger..it's ALL free licensed software that's vulnerable including those under the BSD license.
Sombody make sure Cyberdyne systems was NOT one of the vendors involved......
yes
You ignored the "along with other precautions" part of my post.

I pretty much agree with you. I don't see how it could be done. Then again, many people do things others think impossible.
Personally I use trackerless torrents with Magnet URI addresses. It would not surprise me to see that as being the future ot BT.
Interesting....
I work at an Internet2 connected organization.
www.kernel.org still get's routed over our regular commercial internet backbone. I expected it to go through I2.
But when I tracerouted master.kernel.org it went over I2.
How many interfaces with different IP addresses does this thing have?
So what if you don't use trackers but connect exclusively via trackerless torrents?
It would seem to me that the "vulnerability" only exists if you are sending data to a tracker.

I keep comming back to the thought of what OS X would be like if they used LINUX as their core kernel instead of Mach.
THAT would be a much more interesting discussion.
Imagine what OS X would be like today if LINUX was the kernel..

Here are the Magnet URI links. The trackers are having problems. Connect this way...

Note that slashdot mangles URI's so ther is NO space before the last two charachters like it prints here...just get rid of the space

Just theoretically speaking of course..

EVERYBODY knows that Vulcans introduced velcro to an unsuspecting American banker as shown on the documentary program "Enterprise" on UPN.....

The tracker is down...somebody post the Magnet URI address so we can attach to the swarm decentralized!
If you are using Azureus.....can you post the magnet URI address (for trackerless torrent)?
Can you post the Magnet URI? The tracker is down. With the URI at least we could attach via dht.
Rumor is that Wes Craven is going to do Dr. Strange.
That promises to be horrific
