Stop this shit, seriously. This EEE mentality died with Ballmer's departure, and if you have been even remotely paying attention to this company, you will have seen that all of the FOSS contributions that M$FT has been making have been legitmate because their business model doesn't rely on them anymore.
I get that you have some reservations about trusting the company, and admittedly, I am primarily a.Net developer. But still, your ostrich-like "keep my head in the sand and ignore the reality around me" mentality is just depressing. I am excited about more and more of these tools becoming Open Source and multi-platform, because it not only benefits me, but all of my fellow developers. What possible benefit could M$FT reap from openly joining open source teams, accepting contributions, and building up platforms, only to renege at a later date and say "now pay us money!"? Setting aside the LITANY of lawsuits that it would bring, it wouldn't make any financial sense, since 90% of the tools they are releasing support languages and platforms that are already FOSS.
Time for you to wake up and face reality. Microsoft is focusing on a cloud-first business model, and that means removing barriers for people who want to use said cloud-services. They are only hurting themselves by keeping their tools and platforms closed and Windows-only.
I have a hard time believing that he would ever do something even remotely close to what he said, but you are right: the lists are scary. Granted, they should be fairly easy to avoid...
Wow. I gave you a direct quote from the guy and you accuse me of lying? Way to go champ! Denial of reality, dial it up to 11!
I think you should refer to my username when searching for the way to deal with recent political events (or even my comments to you:) ). It is understandable if you don't like what the man said, but try to take a step back and view things objectively. Either that, or resign yourself to angst and echo-chambers.
Regardless of your political stance or your opinion of Trump, publicly threatening the life of a federal politician is about the dumbest shit you could do.
Sad how these unthinking people will put themselves on lists for the rest of their lives because they couldn't use the slightest bit of moderation.
Fascinating. So it looks like that quote is certainly open to "some" interpretation.
For instance, it depends on how you quantify the qualifier of "some". Being inherently a vague expression, you ascribe to it a meaning of "a small amount", when in reality, the definition is "an undetermined or unspecified amount".
Setting aside the question of amounts, the quote also reads such that "Mexico" is sending people. Many would agree that this is referring to the Mexican government, and Trump was (to my knowledge) making the implication that said government is pushing all of its "undesirables" onto us through illegal immigration. This makes a big difference when one is questioning the "xenophobic" or "racist" nature of a quote. Xenophobia would be the fear of immigration and alien presence, while the quote seems to make me think that Trump is instead unhappy with a sovereign state's efforts to clean up its own population by forcing the bad elements out into another sovereign state. Also, Racism is the belief that another race is inherently superior or inferior to others. I don't actually see any part of this quote that refers to race, but I suppose that is being pedantic, no? Lets assume that "Mexican" is a race instead of a nationality. Do you see him saying anything negative about Mexicans as a social group? Is he not referring to illegal immigrants exclusively?
I don't imagine you'll really take any of this to heart, but I do hope that you begin to question what you're being told by not only the media, but your own leaders. I, myself, didn't vote for Trump (feel the Johnson, baby), but it does certainly rub me the wrong way when I see people telling bold-faced lies about what a public figure "does" and "says". Even if Trump was spouting lies, do you really need to stoop to the level of a liar to discredit him?
Calling Mexicans rapists is the textbook definition of hate speech.
I'm actually interested in where he said this. Do you mind linking the actual quote? Let me also add this: you said that he "called mexicans rapists". Are you asserting that he implied that all mexicans were rapists, or that the entire population of Mexicans contains people who are rapists, but not necessarily all of them?
The idea is to make two stand-alone apps that both do one thing well, and then to market them across both (all?) main mobile platforms. They want to create direct competitors to iMessages and FaceTime.
The bar is pretty low, since neither of those two applications have "killer features", so what Google really needs to get right is critical mass with its user base, and diversity in its install base (platform-wise).
I'll be more impressed if I could get Edge to actually work using much of the internet. I don't give a crap about it's battery life.
I'm interested to know what specific parts of the internet you are referring to. Granted, I haven't used the browser for terribly much (in case I didn't make it clear in my original post, my browser of choice is still Chrome), but I haven't noticed anything not functioning as intended.
Say what you will about M$FT or IE or whatever, but Edge is surprisingly fast and efficient.
I bought a tiny $80 Windows 10 tablet with around 2gb of ram and a minuscule atom processor, and Chrome will choke at just about everything (especially gmail). Edge opens quickly, browses quickly, and utilizes very little memory.
Not shilling for Edge or Microsoft by any means, but for what its worth, they definitely improved their web browser pretty substantially.
Replace the electronics when it's actually dead or doesn't meet your needs, not just because it's not as shiny as it once was.
The problem that you, like most tech-savvy posters on/. have is that you can't understand what the average consumer's "needs" are. Many people just like the thrill of buying a new product. Couple that with the slight gains or improvements (in the products functionality, in your own social status, etc) that are to be had, and it is pretty apparent why people routinely buy new things even when they don't, in your opinion, "need to".
Of course, this is why most of us here work in tech, and not in sales or marketing. Our needs and tastes tend to differ when placed next to those of the average consumer, and we often make assertions about the worth of a product based on those same metrics.
Why comment on this? Who gives a shit? It is a single line of an article summary, which is just a quote of TFA itself. Why draw more attention to what is little more than just an opinion on "a really great computer"?
I really don't understand why some slashdotters take time out of their day to complain about this. I mean, if something that could be called "advertising" offends you, why not just ignore it? Why let it bother you so much?
Too bad there's no microSD adapter for the Vita like there was for the PSP, so I'm still stuck buying Sony's overpriced memory card.
Ay. My only suggestion there is to keep an eye out during black friday sales, and even potentially getting a used one. Either way, I really hope that Sony doesn't pull this shit again, should they make another handheld.
Fellow Vita owner here, and I actually love mine. Up until now, the main use that I've had for it has been playing psOne games that I've downloaded off the store (mostly for nostalgia's sake). I've always been a big fan of playing console games on consoles (not huge into emulation on a PC or phone), and the form factor allows me to take it on the train with me in the morning.
I'd definitely recommend giving it another shot, especially now that this jailbreak is out. One of my favorite things about my PSP was the ability to play most/all old psOne games (through jailbroken means), as well as the host of old console emulators that existed.
Great post, except for the fact that the story is missing "(competing product)", "(bad attribute)", "(link to store)", and the part about "buying now, etc".
Seriously, I can't understand why you people can't just move on when you see a post that contains $PRODUCT. Yeah, maybe it slightly resembles an advertisement, and yeah, maybe it is something that might be targeted at "nerds", but do you seriously think that the/. editors are actively trying to convince you to buy this thing? Maybe it is just a cool new device that fills an interesting niche. Maybe the submitter or editor thinks it would strike up some interesting dialogue in the comments about the pros and cons of such a technology. Maybe they really are getting paid (as Whipslash so wonderfully put it) a truckload to post said story.
WHO. CARES.
These things are hardly posted regularly, and if you don't like their content, you can easily hide said stories from view (or just ignore them). Why always bring this up? Why always complain about "slashvertisements"? Why can't you guys contribute to a topic like this without throwing it out as some sinister plot to undermine our wonderful commune with the heinous threat of capitalism?
The SJW's who say "A private company isn't obligated to respect your civil rights"
I think you have that backwards. The SJW types are usually the ones crying for more censorship and control, not less. No SJW would tell you that a private company isn't obligated to respect your civil rights. If anything, the would seek to crush any business that doesn't conform to their hyper-progressive worldview.
one of the great achievements of modern society is that we have developed a culture that shows some level of consideration to even the weakest members of society.
some level of consideration to even the weakest members of society.
I'd say our biggest problem is that we have shown too much consideration to those who choose to be offended and upset by even the most mundane of things. Reality hardens an individual. While we may not all be ready to be soldiers on the front lines, I would think it reasonable to expect a human being to be able to maintain some degree of sanity after being exposed to some of the darker truths of this world.

Honestly, after this election, I'm surprised anyone takes that phrase seriously.
Sounds like Microsoft would be taking a play right out of Apple's book.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
What evidence do you have of the contrary?

This gets said a lot, but Chrome is also (possibly) the most feature rich browser in existence. I think it is hard to make a comparison, really.
Excellent use of rhetoric and ad hominems. Surely you are the voice of reason that all of us on the "racist-right" need to listen to!
