  3. What already exists on Google's Schmidt Drew Up Draft Plan For Clinton In 2014 (itwire.com) · · Score: 0

Both Republicans and Democrats have maintained state potential voter data bases for a long time. These data bases are maintained even between elections. Access to the data bases are available on a pay to play basis for party candidates and for free for some party officials. I have no knowledge if data base information is also sold for commercial use. The data bases allow more efficient use of limited resources. because almost always campaign resources are insufficient to do everything you want to do. In the past data entry was done using paper records from canvassers being entered into the data base by other volunteers. The cost of direct data entry devices is high if you can't depend on the volunteers devices. Data analysis is already done so nothing new there. After the campaign the data base goes away? Seems unlikely. The database still has value and the information can be sold. I would tell everyone that reads this comment that what exists today is already sufficient to make your worst dreams possible. When the secret police break into your home in the middle of the night it matters very little whether they have a swastika pin or a US flag pin or a hammer and sickle pin.

  4. Economic Development, Snowden, Noodleman on Vladimir Putin Is Replacing Microsoft Programs With Domestic Software (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 0

The Russians are using their local talent to enter the software field. Recent articles describe Russian programming talent as second best to only China. Snowden's revelations largest affect seems to be economic. The economic sanctions imposed on Russia seem to unintended consequences that adversely affect American companies but sanctions often do. If you don't know who Noodlman is look it up.

  5. I agree that Brennens statement is welcome. But do we believe what he has said when other individuals in positions similar to his openly lie under oath and nothing happens to them. Also I like to know that the CIA will not use contractors or other countries or other private organizations to do "enhanced interrogation" in the name of the CIA. "Enhanced interrogation" is good at producing propaganda and not good at producing effective actionable information. My hope is that this statement represents a reordering of CIA priorities away from influencing Congress and the American people and directing the CIAs activities towards doing what it is supposed to do.

  6. Snowden where are you now? Don't you care about your mother and her country? If you have any thing to show us about the technical aspects of this situation speak now and speak loudly.

In the not too recent past the US government spent over $30,000,000 to try and change the outcome of the Ukrainian election. Putin has claimed that some of the demonstrations in Moscow have out side support. And last but not least Hong Kong. It makes me wonder if the cold war actually started a while ago.

There are a lot of things that can be done now that don't have the great potential negative effects that are possible with nuclear energy production. When houses are built or roofs are replaced heat reflective roofs can be used. This could be done for a very small additional cost that would be quickly recovered in cost savings. Passive solar design could reduce fuel use especialy if combined with better insulation. If the passive solar design of buildings was done with an emphasis on keeping the increase in the cost of building to only a small increase a large amount of benefit could be for an acceptable price. There are many cost effective things that can be done now.

  10. Other Possibilities on UK Prime Minister Threatens To Block Further Snowden Revelations · · Score: 2

One dark possibility is the PM going all past US policy for real. He could just start locking up everyone involved his government could get their hands on. Then the governments in question could use extrodinary rendetion to get the rest. If other governmants would not cooperate (Brazil) then start killing those held to be responsible(Greenwald and the offending editors). Given the claimed targeted killing and extraordinary rendition powers already used the only differences would be the scale of non legal behavior and the targets. This use of power would make some use of supression of dissent necessary. When governments go all out with no regard for any laws domestic or international the offending parties can be removed from the playing field. With the help of the US it could be done. Lets hope cooler heads prevail.

  11. No Doubt on Ask Slashdot: Can We Still Trust FIPS? · · Score: 2

I have no doubt that FIPS 140-2 is fully available to the NSA. The official story is probably so they can monitor or prevent espionage. Also the NSA has political interests in terms of knowing what it's opponents within the government are doing. If the NSA had adequte supervision this wouldn't be allowed but they don't have adequte supervision. So there you are.

  12. The problem is political on What Is an Astronaut's Life Worth? · · Score: 1

Deaths in the manned space program are political problems. The reason costs have risen is in part the level of deaths in the program was at a level that was not politicaly sustainable. Robotic missions can do almost all the things a manned mission can and are cheaper. How many lives are you willing to lose to take 6 th grade designed science experiments into orbit. The manned space program is in no small part a propoganda exercise. Deaths are realy bad PR
