The mother did "nothing"?? What do you expect her to do? The kid is already 20 years old. Up until he went off the deep end by shooting up a school, he never committed a crime. It's obvious he had issues and some possible warning signs in the past, but we can't lock up people for thinking something.

Should we just implement some sort of "Minority Report precog psychics" and lock up people for crimes they have not (yet) committed?

For many, their cell phone is their only camera. Many don't have the knowledge (or desire) to offload them to a computer and archive it. That alone makes most people not want to do it. With the amount of storage a camera has, the average joe could accumulate a lot of photos without ever having to delete them. Cloud services make the problem even worse (like iCloud) since a photo you take on your camera can be automatically copied to the cloud service, then automatically copied to one's PC resulting in even more ways to steal a pic by stealing a totally different device. It doesn't excuse their responsibility though. If there are photos on one's phone that could be a source of embarrassment, assume that someone could someday get a hold of it.

Who the hell cares that my "free" and "open" OS is wrought with security issues, it's all sticking your head in the sand and sticking it to the "Apple Man". Childish.

The one sporting the ego is you. People do need/want someone to look up to. For many, it can be someone as simple as their own mom or dad, maybe a certain school teacher. Armstrong is/was a role model regardless of what pessimists like you think. If one kid that saw Armstrong land on the moon meant he/she went to college, went into science, and contributed to society doesn't prove that theory, what will? Stroke your ego of self-importance elsewhere.

Interesting that the folks that hate Apple, probably never developed for Apple, seem to know how Apple treats developers. Interesting. Developers are doing just fine so long as they create stuff that people (not egotistical tech-heads like /.) actaully want and use. Don't believe me? Talk to the developers that create iOS software that contribute to the tens of millions of iPads being bought for serious industries like the airlines, government, restaurant, and the entertainment sectors. Then, lets discuss with the Android developers that are helping to sell tens of millions of high-quality Android tablets to those industries too... Oh wait, nevermind. Of course, you'll have your excuses as to why nobody really takes Android tablets seriously in the real world.

I totally agree. This trial needed to happen. It sent a message that if you're going to compete, you better do it on your own merit and not copy someone else's hard work and try taking a ride from it. Samsung got what it deserved. If I were Apple, I'd be demanding that $1B+ check right now. Sure, appeal it if you want (I'm sure it will) but that just means extra interest payments on that amount!
