  1. Re:You have to give it to the engineers on 35 Years Later, Voyager 1 Is Heading For the Stars · · Score: 1

i did mention that there is a "world of difference" between consumer autos/devices and voyager. One other point, the military constantly maintains the Jets, Ships, Vehicles, etc. Voyager doesn't get a lot of wrench time these days.

You are definitely correct. It is amazing to think that technology from 35 years ago is still operating and sending back data. We generally don't keep cars around for 35 years let alone computers, phones, or even kitchen appliances. Now there is a world of difference between these things i mentioned and the tight tolerances that went into Voyager, but it still absolutely amazing what we as humans have accomplished. Carl Sagan would have been excited with the current Mars Rover, along with all of the other projects that we have successfully launched, but I think he would be a bit saddened by the state of the manned programs.

I like my windows PC's too and my Mac experiences have been mostly favorable (no darn right click...) There is a community for each of these OS's but the linux community can actually steer the os in ways that most others cannot. Again I like them all, but I love Linux.

I agree, the patent system is so broken it is only a new venue for attorneys to grow rich, while innovators and consumers suffer. What is even more disturbing and wrong is the ability to patent life forms, or even genes. Centers performing cutting edge cancer research cannot always have access to genes or genomes they wish to study because they are simply unable to afford the price of admission (licensing). It really is a sad state of affairs.

Every time flocks news, or msnbc reported about some activity attributed to anonymous, they would talk about law enforcement going after anon's command and control, or leadership...not understanding that there is no leadership. When a lot of strangers get together and are motivated to complete a goal, it can get done, and I believe that is the main point and I believe it was made.

this could see application on extreme close up technology similar to those found in videoscopes (like this http://www.rfsystemlab.us/vj-adv-4mm.html ) the wider the angle the greater the distortion. what is interesting is the method they used to create the lens effect. They coated the flat lens in concentric circles with slightly different coatings that would change the phase delay for each ring thus focusing the incoming light. Very interesting technology.

Are we willing to give up more control to "Authorities" and who exactly should these authorities be. Should those with authority be able to execute such a kill switch without notice or should users/citizens have notice? Thinking into the future, if i decided to go to a soft drink vending machine that is "smart" and i choose to purchase a sugar laden drink but my bmi is over a certain number should these authorities dispense a diet soft drink instead. I don't believe we are quite in a big brother society (but approaching it) IMHO users should have the option to disable the "dummy switch" on their devices. For example: if a user has(or feels they have) the technical savvy to be able to take care of their computer or device they should be able to retain responsibility for their devices/computers without being required to give it up to an "authority". Looking to a future where if you are 1 second late on your utility payment...oops you don't have that utility any more..

It may take us years to develop all of what is needed but it can be done and the only thing really holding us back is budgets.
