Every other message on the
RtCF Transgaming Forum expresses a similar opinion.
See my post about why I use wineX instead of the Linux binaries.
Basically wineX works for me, the binaries don't. wineX has support and is continually impoving, the binaries don't and aren't.
Saying that you won't pay $5 a month for Transgaming membership because too many users vote for a game you don't think should be officially supported is silly. Any work Transgaming would do to improve RtCW would certainly improve wineX performance for other games as well.
For christsakes, RtCW isn't even offically supported (and probably never will be because it will never pass the monthly vote). That doesn't matter to me though because it already works fine with wineX 2.0
When George Bush was campaigning for the presidency, as incumbent vice president, one of his stops was in Chicago, Illinois, on August 27, 1987. At O'Hare Airport he held a formal outdoor news conference. There Robert I. Sherman, a reporter for the American Atheist news journal, fully accredited by the state of Illinois and by invitation a participating member of the press corps covering the national candidates had the following exchange with then Vice President Bush.
Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are Atheists?
Bush: No, I don't know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.
Cars probably aren't the best analogy. Auto's aren't designed with interplation in mind. Automobiles only need to fit the standards of road systems and driver interface.
A better analogy would be to compare tractors to operating systems. Modern tractors have a universal interface for connecting to impelments. There's a 540 Power Take Off (PTO) shaft, tow hitch, and 3-point hitch. These systems allow for thousands of different types of farm machinery (software) made by different manufacturers to be attached to any brand of tractor (operating system).
Although I don't know the actual history behind this standardization, I don't think it was mandated by any organization. It didn't happen all at once either, Allis Chalmers stuck with their own proprietary 3-point hitch (Snap Coupler) up until the 1960's.
The point I was trying to make was that laws must be drafted in black and white.
If you don't want to call computer generated images of child pornography artistic expression, that's fine. But the fact remains that these images are created by a person. The pixels of a computer generated image are arranged by that person using his/her own judgement. As far as the law is concerned, how is this different from someone painting nude children with oil on canvas. How about scanning such a painting?
The reason child pornography is illegal is to protect children. To protect children from being sexually abused in the act of creating child pornography.
Lawmakers tried to limit pedophile's access to images of child pornography. They did this because they felt it was morally right. There's no evidence to support the argument that pedophiles will be more likely to control their behavior if they are unable to see images depicting their desires.
I'm really disgusted with myself for taking the side of pedophiles, but it's a question in black and white. Do we control artistic expression for the sake of morality? No.
I had exactly the same conversation except a quick substitue of "NT 4.0" with "Linux".
Also the Tech person told me I could still RMA the drive if I could get Windows 98 back on it using the restore CD. I thought it would be quicker to call back and tell them I had Windows 98 on it than to try to dissassemble the drive and try to set the bits by hand.
In regards to your notebook comment, I'm not sure what "docking" envolves, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with just about any linux distribution with pcmcia support.
I have a Sony 505TR notebook. I installed Slackware 8.0 on it when I got it back in September. I've since rebooted the thing once (to install a 2.4 kernel). Basically the thing's been booted for nearly 6 months, all i do is close the lid to suspend it. I'm always swapping out
PCMCAI NIC's (wirless at home, ethernet at work,
no card on the road)
and have never had to manually change anything
when switching cards (if that's what you mean by
transparent).
Just because he used a fact from "Years ago" doesn't make his statement any less true.
Personally there are quite a few things I use Linux for that XP cannot do:
1) backing up my home pc to DV tapes with my camcorder
2) tunneling IPX traffic over the internet to play Warcraft II with a friend
3) mounting DVD filesystems
4) I can securely log into my company's Linux servers over my 26.4 kbps modem and do any administration duty i could do if I was sitting in front of a monitor hooked to the machine.
First let me say that ROX is my favorite graphical
file manager for X. With that said, let me
tell you why I don't use it. It lacks the ability
to save view preferences on a per-directory basis.
A directory with one file opens up with the same
default view preferences as a directory with 200
files. There needs to be a way to save window
size, icon size, sort order, etc.
Actually, the real reason I don't use it, is
because a modern shell seems so much more
efficient at file operations than any
graphical file manager could be.
I think people should focus on making Linus' job
easier rather than trying to divy up his job.
Instead of developing a heirarchy of control over
the linux source code, we should develop a system
for more efficient patch management for Linus to
use. Perhaps some sort of tool that would
auto-build kernels and provide an easy way for
Linus to see diffs of an particular patch and
comment on it to the submitter. If the patches
were all archived in a system of this type, we'd
likely hear the end of "you ignored me" complaints. The system wouldn't really have to
replace any existing mechanisms as it could just
ride on top of an email address and suck off the
patches (if they were submitted in some standard way).
Check out the table at the bottom of the article
that gives some examples of the genome lengths of various organisms. Plants have longer genomes.
Is it possible that the amount of "junk" as they
call it, could grow linearly with the number of times the genome is copied? If this were true,
the length of a genome could be related to a
revision number.
Hi, I'm a homo sapian (Life major version 23432 minor version 3.4 Billion). Available for download life-23432.3400000000(3.4 Gb). (I just
made up the 23432 number)
Of course I know next to nothing about genetics, and it seems all too simple, but it's comforting
to make very complex things seem simple.
These are all examples of a fairly simple web application that pretty much destroy all hopes of this filtering methodology every flying. Are all these
applications to be blacklisted as "obcene", "occult", or "too useful"?
Just like the porn, they'll never get em all.
The resolution: Just have a coke and a smile and shut the fuck up.
I've heard that Oregon has 100% of their polling handled by the USPS (snail mail) this year.
They're probably waiting 3-10 days for all the ballots postmarked November 7 to arrive. It's a good thing that the race didn't come down to Oregon. I'd be willing to bet there would be some tampering with the mail if that was the case. IMHO, it is not a very good voting system and will be replaced by the next vote.
I remember hearing Dan Rather commenting how _fast_ oregon would be called this year. I guess he didn't think that through.
I'm naive about these new television technologies.
What is the difference between HDTV and DigitalTV? Hauppauge has had a PCI DigitalTV card for some time now. Until just now, I thought it was an HDTV card.
NOTE: Many Hauppauge cards have Linux support already.
Today I installed Konquerer for the first time.
I was totally blown away. I've been using it all day and IMHO it is the best
web browser available for Linux today.
The file manager component is coming along nicely too. It's no match for a trusty shell at
your side though.
I had the same service in Minneapolis. The performance was unbeatable, but horridly unreliable. The router would loose its connection and re-sync every couple of hours. I called tech support every day for a couple of months. They arranged to have my line checked on numerous occasions and it tested out fine. They replaced my Flowpoint router with
another of the same model. I eventually learned to
deal with the constant network outages and when my 1 year contract ran out, I moved.
"Lastly, and most importantly, the Bible says that God created the universe and every living thing, so the world must have been created. In denying this we call God a liar."
that's some solid logic... maybe i should redesign my whole belief system.

Happen to try mozilla 1.0 Rc2 lately with HTTP Pipelining enabled? Thats fast!
I tried it. It couldn't notice any speed improvement, and rendering pages with lots of images failed miserably (e.g http://tjw.org/wedding/)
I guess that's why it's disabled by default.

I got mine from Scotgold over in the UK.
I just emailed them a GIF image representing the logo I wanted.

dvbackup is a utility that lets you store up to 13gb of data on commodity miniDV tapes. With the use of a Digital Camcorder.
:(.
This is not exactly a dirt cheap solution, but if you have/want a digital camcorder anyway, there's only the cost of extra tapes.
Make sure the camcorder works with dvbackup before buying one though. It doesn't work with any JVC's that I know of, or at least not mine

Although this is not the VPN solution you're looking for, it is very cool.
You can use taptunnel to connect multiple LANs together through an encrypted pipe.
It's also the best solution for playing multiplayer IPX games like starcraft between LANs.
