    Security Update 2006-007

    AirPort

    CVE-ID: CVE-2006-5710

Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.8, Mac OS X Server v10.4.8

Impact: Attackers on the wireless network may cause arbitrary code execution

Description: A heap buffer overflow exists in the AirPort wireless driver's handling of probe response frames. An attacker in local proximity may be able to trigger the overflow by sending maliciously-crafted information elements in probe responses. This issue affects eMac, iBook, iMac, PowerBook G3, PowerBook G4, and Power Mac G4 systems equipped with an original AirPort card. This issue does not affect systems with the AirPort Extreme card. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of probe response frames. Credit to H D Moore of Metasploit for reporting this issue.

I'm the guy that waits a year or so for the game I want to drop down to $20 or so, when I saw the first LEGO Star Wars installment become a Players Choice game I knew it had to be pretty good.

Actually with my Zelda background I expected free camera movement and didn't really "get it" the first time I played, so it sat on the shelf for a week. Then... strangely my WIFE said she wanted to try it, she hasn't played a single video game EVER since we've been married. I'd never have expected it, but we found a game we can play together and work out way through. She'd actually come home and say "Okay after dinner lets play some LEGOS", it was a shock! Alright the one annoying thing is when teammates walk in opposite directions the screen pulls you back, so sometimes you can get yourself stuck in a repeat dying spot and have no escape since both characters can't move. Other than that, I've gotten quite used to it and have enjoyed it immensely. The Freeplay mode is a lot of fun and the ability to swap characters at any time let's you blow through old enemies that were at first challenging. Also the ability to "drop out" and then join back in comes in handy when the wife gets stuck on some jump or pod-racing section she can't beat. I'm also surprised how rarely she drops out as she's willing to try over and over until she figures something out. Normally she hates games she loses at, but with the infinite lives and not throwing us back to the start it doesn't bother her much.

Nice bit of variety with the pod-racing and space battles, it's a great game for a gamer to introduce a non-gamer with. Being able to go two-player at any time is really nice.

Any game that gets my wife interested is the game of the year to me. Now she can't wait til we get a Wii. :-)

Only problem is... I have to watch Pride and Predjudice. ;-)

I understand your reading of it, in the sense that we are "born in sin" and will no longer be that way after death. In other words the sinful inclination of the flesh would be removed. I'll give you that one, that regardless of a resurrection in heaven or on earth everyone will no longer have the inheritance from Adam which naturally inclines us to do what is wrong. I was reading it in the sense of "an eye for an eye" you read it differently, and Vine's is not quite clear enough which term it actually is. I still believe however that death is actually death, from the warning to Adam of what would happen to him, scriptures about the death of the soul and Ecc.9:5-10 for example. After all the punishment for sin is death. :)

As a result, religions will come to de-emphasize the notion that people get what they "deserve" after they die.

Just FYI religions and the Bible are two different things. Basically most forms of Christiandom believe what you stated, that "You'll get it in the end!" and people smile with the smug belief that anyone who messes with them in this life will get their reward x infinity in the next one.

However the bible actually teaches that sins are all forgiven on death. Romans 6:23 explains the the wages of sin is death, and Romans 6:7 rightly states then that anyone who has died has paid off their sins. That's totally fair, especially when you learn about the resurrection on earth and the big second chance everyone gets. (Ac. 24:15) When contrasted with what most people claim it becomes quite obvious why many chose to hate God and think of him as a twisted sick-puppy who wants to torture people FOREVER. That's not justice at all, and there's no crime whatsoever that deserves eternal suffering, certainly a lack of faith in him wouldn't deserve that either.

Sure there's the speed, that's great... but the range is key here. Ya see wirless is one of those techs where the providers have an automatic monopoly on service. Let's take the local Starbucks, the shopping mall, the airport... generally you're only going to have access to a single network in those locations. Automatic monopoly of wireless services = $40 a month service fees if you're lucky.

Now compare this to my condo, there's generally four to eight wireless networks in range in any room of the house. Some are locked, and some are open. I have my own closed network not broadcasting it's SSID, but the point is plenty of options.

Soon imagine a world where you go to Starbucks, the mall or the airport and you see four to eight wireless networks available. Hmmm... shall I join the local wireless business club for more than I pay for broadband at home, or shall I jump on "FreeWiMAX" instead?

Most likely some sort of ad-supported "FreeWiMAX" network will pop up all over, also some home users, etc... with varying levels of speed and quality, but the point is the local providers have lost their monopoly of service in their areas and finally wireless charges will have to drop and they'll need to actually compete.

It's pretty bright and when it turns on all of the sudden, you NOTICE. It then proceeded to crash my browser. Well it may be possible that Apple carefully designed their hardware in such a way that the LED is software controlled and the camera is capable of invisibly monitoring people, there is no evidence to back those claims.

True with proprietary software one just never knows for sure, but honestly let's see someone figure out how to take a picture or make a movie without the light coming on, THEN we can start calling Apple Big Brother. Honestly if that were possible then I'd dump this laptop in a heartbeat since it would require purposely designing it with that in mind.

I was working on a slideshow presentation for a client and had been using Keynote when I heard about the MacHeist bundle. I noticed Fotomagico and saw that it's normal price is $80, so I figured $50 for the whole package is a great deal. The last few days I've been playing around with them as I have time and basically here's how it runs down for me.

I picked Enigmo since I played the first version and liked it, but didn't feel like purchasing it. So that's money from me Pangea wouldn't have gotten.

Delicious Library is cool, but I don't really see how I'm going to USE it. Still fun to scan my stuff and I'll have to remind myself to scan things before I loan them to friends, I'll probably use it every now and then. Doubt I'll upgrade but it's nice to have in it's current form.

DevonThink I've never heard of before, but I'm trying to get into the Getting Things Done workflow and I think it'll help me out there. It's just so flexible and does so much I'm still not sure what to do with it, but I'll definately start trying to put some projects on it and hope I can get the flow going with it. A definite keeper, more $$ they never would have gotten from me. May even upgrade someday if I really get the hang of it.

ShapeShifter... I'm not a themer. Yeah some are cool looking, but I'm not a Pimp My Ride kinda guy. There's another developer that got dinero of mine they'd NEVER have seen otherwise.

Disco. I may need this someday, nice to have in the Utilities folder, better burning than the OS has built in... not sure when I'll ever use it.

RapidWeaver. Already started using it, I tried to make a basic page before with iWeb and it just wasn't working out. Fooled with this a few minutes and got my page up and running. Very nice.

iClip ... I dunno, I think including this in the same package of DevonThink kinda lowers it's usefulness. I'll have to fool with it a bit, but doubt I'll be using it much. I pretty much just use text clippings on the desktop then clean them up later. I don't really think to start another app just to copy some stuff.

Newsfire. I don't keep track of many sites, Safari's RSS does the job for me although I know it's limited. If someone ever asks about a better RSS agent than Safari I'll have one in mind.

TextMate. I'm not really a programmer so we'll see if I ever use this.

So then, out of 10 apps I only would have actually bought ONE of them. No, let me take that back, I wouldn't have bought Fotomagico on it's own since I don't really feel like shelling out $80 for it.

So really NOBODY would have gotten any of my cash at all without this deal. But especially the four apps I'll never ever use. There are the 6 which I have some interest in, but only 2 or 3 I'll use regularly from now on.

Still, they've gotten me to at least download and try out all 10 apps, maybe later on I'll recommend one of them to someone even though I personally don't use it. It builds awareness and spreads goodwill for ALL of those developers. So now if I talk to some Mac user who remembers with fondness the old WinAMP interface and wishes he could have it back, I'll tell him to pick up ShapeShifter and mod his OS. Someone asks about information saving and organizing I'll mention Freemind first of all, and then point out DevonThink has a different focus but is still very slick and worth checking out.

Compare this to magazine subscriptions, as I understand it costs an average of $40 of advertising and free giveaways for everyone 1 subscriber. So overall the developers involved in the MacHeist got themselves way more than $1,000,000 worth of advertising and mindshare with this. Goodness how do you market software? These guys made out like bandits here.
