Why the peace overtures? The USSR economy being in the tank for years trying to keep up with Yankee technology might have had something to do with old Gorby's change from Soviet SOP.
I'm an Admin that is currently trying to wring as much performance as possible out of brand new hardware because someone chose to make FoxPro the DB of choice for a 400 user app. Yay. Instead of going with a real DB they think the hardware is not tuned correctly.
My favorite developer quote: "It worked on my machine, I don't see why I doesn't work in production".
It has been my experience that these extra levels of admin control have been put in place in reaction to developers (and admins too) that make changes on the fly to production systems that cause companies thousands while the "fix" is being fixed.

I can count over 500 Novell 4.12 servers in my "Network Neighborhood" and I'm at a fortune 100 company.
The strange CLI gets some better with Netware5. Heck, you can even run Perl or Java scripts from the command line on the console.
Caldera+Netware services is where it is at if you are a Novell shop.
