  2. Re:What is 'live'? on First Virtual Piano Competition · · Score: 5, Insightful
You've got 88 keys plus 3 pedals that are hit and released at precise times with a given force. The number of variables is limited and pretty straightforward. A sensor under each key could record the performance accurately, and a regular piano with a bunch of robotic plungers could play it back.
it doesn't sound like you've played a lot of piano. The whole idea of the piano is in it's full name: pianoforte. this means that you can vary the intensity of each note played by varying how hard you strike the key. the piano was leaps and bounds ahead of the harpsicord that only could pluck the string one way. the piano uses a set of hammers to vary the intensity of the sound. where a disclavier might fall short is in recording the nuances of pressure applied: it just might not be exact enough. if you play the the purely electronic Yamaha keyboards you really miss out on the dynamic range of an authentic, stringed, piano. it's not as simple as sequencing in midi. When the piano is played masterfully there is a liason between each note that joins the whole composition together.

the 2.4ghz band is a mess. cordless phones, video transmitters (X.10!), 802.11, and Bluetooth all share that band of frequencies. Granted, this is what was pretty well inevitable with the FCC unrestricting the 2.4ghz band.

now there are technologies they never thought of, like interference from this light. I seriously have a problem with any of these 2.4ghz products: i'm not even guaranteed that my video transmitter will work with my phone without interfering.

i'll wait until Ultra Wide Band products become available. 3.1ghz phones are just around the corner. then watch us roll into GPS territory. maybe we should just switch back to carrier pigeons (:

how will windows be dead? i'm not trying to flamebait, but while this may have been true for 95/98, when 2k and XP came out Microsoft finally achieved stability on their platform.

Windows is now stable and it can operates happily in the background with uptimes of days, weeks and months. i don't want to get into an OS war, but for the majority of end users, they requested windows, even when it was still buggy. again, this is nothing new. Microsoft is just the de facto standard for home now.

what Dell really misses out on by dropping Linux is the server market. they're simply ignoring (or pressured out of) the market of servers that can be administrated wonderfully with linux. THIS is the point of superiority that we can all agree with.

the thing is, i've tried everything, and i'm looking at stuff like this now. why? i've done the computer by the reciever. i've done the 2.4ghz video tranmitters. i've tried the long ass cords. these are the things that upset me with "brew your own"

    1) i've got a 2000 stereo system, and i'm still relying on headphone jacks to get my sound out.

    2) i'm the only person in the house that knows how to play a DVD through my system

    3) the fan is loud. the box is clunky.

so in a nutshell, the computer will do you fine. so will using a set of slip-joint pliers instead of a sledge hammer to pound in a nail. when you buy a stereo system, you want everything easy to use as a remote control, easier if possible.

I'm looking for a sleek box that does all the functions i want from your computer as a media center. I'd pay more for ease of use and usability, and that's why i'd be interested in buying something like this.

however, IMHO i'll keep looking, becauuse this overpriced RIO box is just dang ugly. clunky too.

perhaps it's good that efforts have been made to design around energy limitations. while i'm all for better power supplies, designing circuits that use as little power as possible to do a given task means that less is wasted. just look at the amount of excess processing power we have in our computers and how much unnecessary code there is in a standard application.

engineering around power limitations means smart, efficent designs, not wasteful products that just suck up energy. i think these limitations helped designers innovate.

that being said, it's not like their animated movies are original at all but they are fairy tales that have been "disneyized". I could accept "the little mermaid", but for disney to copy wholesale "Nadia", it's not so much ignorance as it is revisionist.
