well, it was nice and convenient to travel down to washington with nothing but a driver's license. i live in vancouver and i dip across the border once a few times a month to get gas becuase it's just a little way out of my aimless daily commute. now i gotta carry a passport with me? that extra hassle isn't worth it, and a lot of border towns that rely on crossborder shopping are gonna be SOL.

i have a lot of american friends that travel to canada on a whim and with minimal ID. too bad they won't be let back into their own country now without a damn passport.

    Wow, that's worth $500.

It is to some people. My friend (still is my friend) drove over my Canon EOS Elan 7, which has a magnesium frame. the lens was toast and was ripped off the camera.

The camera, however, could still rewind the film and could still pop the flash out. When i brought it into the shop, they were amazed that not only did all the electronics still work and were calibrated, the film plane was still in alignment with the lens! One of the things that made the difference was it's metal construction: if the lens bayonet had been polycarbonate (as it is on the rebels) then likely the camera would have just pulled apart, but as it is metal, i lost a cheap lens.

try running over a rebel with a car.

As soon as i heard that there were going to be disposable digital cameras, i knew it would just be a short wait until someone hacked it. i don't think that this will really be a big problem for Ritz becuase this hack requires actual effort: the majority of people that want a camera would rather spend a hundred bucks on a real camera rather than spending 20 bucks or so for parts and spending a few hours with a soldering iron for this mediocre piece of crap.

if it was a 3 or 4 mp camera i'd be willing to expend the effort to do this, but it's only 1.3mp... check out these crappy pictures! I'm not minimizing the hard work it took for the people to get the camera working, but my time is worth more to me than the lousy pictures i can get from this camera.

It's not a G5, it's a PPC970, completely different beasts. Not to mention neither Motorola or IBM have 2GHz chips in their roadmap until 2005.

geez, and the pentium iii wasn't much of an upgrade over the pentium II, right? it could be just a name used for marketing. maybe they want to avoid a situation where a ppc970 seems as awkward a mouthful to say as "Pentium II celeron".

I will concede to you on the 2ghz.. that was a suprise to me as well.
1GHz bus? gimme a break. Intel hasn't yet reached this.

i guess you were pretty incredulous when the Athlon came out with a double data rate bus before Intel. Intel does not corner the market on chip innovation: Hypertransport, for example, is pretty much something that Intel has nothing to do with either.
The rest of Apples site would say "3 USB Ports" not "Three". Also, Apple have a long standing habit of using Firewire instead of USB 2.0.

guess you missed the bulletin that USB 2.0 chipsets are on new powermacs right now...
Only one FW800 port? Why would Apple stick with FireWire 400 anyway?
becuase fw400 and 800 use different plugs? becuase there are mostly FW400 perhipherals available? i could think of all sorts of reasons. the 17" cafeteria tray powerbook has only one FW800...
but optical audio in a graphics machine? I'm sorry but this sounds like wishful thinking.

maybe it's going to be a big hoax and we'll all look like dupes. but saying that these things are "impossible" makes me think you've been reading too much PC propaganda.

  19. another (unsubstantiated) google fact! on NYT On Google's Role In Internet Advertising · · Score: 5, Interesting
There was an earlier Slashdot article where PBS' Robert Cringely had this to say about Google in his article
...the fault tolerant nature of the cluster is such that if a machine fails, the other machines simply take over its functions. As a result, whenever a server fails at Google, THEY DO NOTHING. They don't replace the broken machine. They don't remove the broken machine. They don't even turn it off. In an army of drones, it isn't worth the cost of labor to locate and replace the bad machines. Hundreds, maybe thousands of machines lie dead, uncounted among the 10,000 plus. We have reached the point where we are totally dependent on computers, yet the marginal cost of a computer -- at least for Google -- is nothing. This may be an historical first.

Until these this article and Cringely's, i had no idea Google's sheer size and computing power. i'd like to find a reference for Cringely's article, though, but it is certainly believable.

miniaturization does carry a price, and people do pay more for small computers. This article illustrates the differences between the market that asks for speed, compared to the market that asks for good design.

this computer is not powerful at all, but how much power would someone need for office chores? this is perfect for the office environment. good for anything that can't have a large bulky computer case lying around.

I think it's laudable that mfgs. build different designs, especially smaller designs. i think that computers would be way more useful if they were designed for the purpose in mind, rather than simply cramming a hot running processor into the cheapest, ugliest box and calling it a "gaming machine". once people start thinking of computers like appliances rather than "OMG 3ghz box!" then we'll see a dramatic change in the way people use computers.

Gradually, we'll see people become less concerned about raw speed and more at making computers actually fit your lifestyle, rather than the other way around.
