    IANAL (gotta start it off with THAT one), but in court, if you can prove a smaller case to be true, it is a very strong point against larger cases. I'm sure napster does not have the revenue to hire as many lawyers and specialists, or to dedicate the resources and time as lycos or hotbot. Napster has been served a few blows as it is, and htey have lost a lot of ground as it is.

    RIAA is just using a steel chair on the wounded knee. Prove that a smaller, yet weaker company, is wrong, it's easier to shut down the larger ones.

    I beg to differ. Every song i've found on napster, restrict the bit rate to 128 or higher. You'll find your song.

    And there are so, SO many programs to rip a cd, turn it to mp3 and NAME it for you, that it can be done on mass scale. Hell, for my own mp3 theatre at home, i've ripped a total of 7 cd's in the past 5 hours. 192 bit, hard to tell the quality difference unless you have good hearing AND a very good set of speakers.

    But you are an exception. I've worked at 3 different places, one that does data warehousing, one that does web stuff and one that needed account only storage. Postgres would have covered all nicely.

    This is about Openbsd (obsd) and the fact that it's implemented and can be used. I'm a freebsd user and advocate. I like IPv6 support in my bsd, but please don't be so overzealous to say that fbsd did it already. It's not about that.

    Oracle/DB2 for the advanced features? Perhaps. I 've only heard of some really cool bells and whistles to Oracle and DB2, such as parallel serving and what not.. but think of it. How many people actually need these features more than just a standalone, i need someplace to put and analyze my data? Good fortune for Postgres.

    a general rule of statistics is that it is just that. a statistic. what you make of it is your own accord. what they have found is that of the 227 people surveyed, they all went/go to college and have played many video games. thus they are violent?

    the part on myst and wolfenstein is pure bull. all that showed was a temporary or exhibition of aggressiveness. The time span of that study was too short imho. Are they also to say pep talks also make people violent? They need to broaden their topic or just say what they found is a statistic. Is it video games that make them aggressive or contact (and simulated) games.

    Libraries allow books to be borrowed, taken home and read.

    I agree, don't replace them. But certainly, add them as an online resource. Quick searches through a single book would be nice. AND, digitizing the ones they have permission to as well as those with expired copyrights would make life cheaper AND a lot faster for everyone. Heck, charge a nickel for every bookd downloaded. It should cover the costs incured... unless they are running nt. Maybe if they ran a beowulf cluster using bsd machines... ;>

    I bet ask jeeves would understand any question if it could understand complex statements where verbs and nouns and splices were programmed in. Ask J is a pumped up eliza that can associate questions to certain answers and give a range of answers. Just like any search engine response: it is as good as the questions asked, the language it interprets as well as the questions it was programmed for. maybe "is jevees gay" is a question better saught out at www.google.com

    As we have seen, opensource has brought some great effects. Many security issues have been flushed out as well as some great advances. But with the idiotic patent issues flying back and forth, should the opensource community wait until source code patents are guaranteed not to happen? If you look hard enough, you will see patents for stupid algorithms such as bubble sort and the y2k "if the year is greater than 70, it's 1970-1999" patent. What are your opinions on patenting and OSS (and possibly the BSD license)

    Its an alternative that is trying to compete in the graphics world under linux. If they won't try to be "better" than Gimp in one or more ways, they will have a failed product. But alas, if they want to make money, they will try to produce a better product, wich people may pay for.

    As for the opensource thing, it's sorta a theology that they may not choose to follow. But if their product is THAT good, it may cause people to still pull a little more towards *nix, wich in some people's eyes, is still good.

    One problem: theft and damage. In nyc, as well as many other cities, there isthe problem where a kid would put his bag in a risky situation putting it on the floor in the bathroom, train, ona seat for a second, and they get stolen. Its even easier to steal a laptop from another dorm room.

    The other problem of course is droping it/nocking it over. A rarer problem, but a problem none the less.

    As a recovering college student, we all know that we were mostly poor..

    Everyone thinks of breaking the speed barrier... but imagine the implications on security. With such a speed jump, would bumping up the encryption key size from in the thousands to something higher, be suffice? A more complex algorithm may be needed.

    What about packet sniffing? Imagine it, now the common computer wouldn't ever need to drop packets while sniffing a nic.
