  2. re-rendering? Hell no! on Could Square Re-Dub the "Final Fantasy" Movie? · · Score: 1

Of course they wouldn't re render the damn movie in other languages. Do you people have any idea what goes into an animation? It's not just a matter of re lip synching the movie, it's re-animating the whole thing! When you talk, you create gestures that go along with those words. Animators have to create those gestures based on every word said. During the production of Shrek, Mike Myers first started doing the voice-over with his regular voice. In the middle of production he decided to change to the scottish accent and the whole thing had to be re-animated costing Dreamworks millions of dollars. I doubt they would reanimate Final Fantasy considering they've already doubled their budget on the current American version.

  3. Re:Deux Ex on Could Square Re-Dub the "Final Fantasy" Movie? · · Score: 1

yeah, it would be a very costly way for Square to proceed... had square rendered the movie in realtime on a GeForce2 card... but nope, it took them over 30 hours to render each frame. Hardly realtime and hardly cost effective to re-render since they've been rendering since the start of production 2 years ago.

  4. Re:Thoughts On Cyberthespians on Could Square Re-Dub the "Final Fantasy" Movie? · · Score: 1

yeah, it costs millions now... but not in a couple of years when it would be tremendously easier to create a CG actor. You also have to keep in mind that while todays skin, cloth, and hair shaders may look a bit rubbery and realistic, this is only the beginning. Final Fantasy the movie is the FIRST movie to even attempt to create a fully photorealistic CG movie. The attempts will only get better and better after that. But CG actors will never replace real actors because there is an actors voice behind the CG actor and real actors often add alot to the movies themselves. People go to see Austin Powers because Mike Myers is in it and it has his style of humor. People go to see Jim Carrey because they like Jim Carrey. CG actors can't add personal touches to the movie itself so CG actors wouldn't bring people into the theatres.

  6. Re:What is creative art? on Aaron: Computer Program And Artist (Maybe) · · Score: 1

the guy who designed the urinal is an artist - the original urinal that he designed is a piece of art, but the factory reproductions are just reproductions of the piece of art. If I put a Van Gogh painting into a Xerox machine - would the resulting image be a piece of art? No, just a reproduction. A representation of the original.

Alan can't really think. It can only be programmed to do what it does so therefore, it's not creating artwork. Intent is a big part of art. The urinal was thought up by a designer with the intent of having maximum effeciency and useability. Thought was put into the shape and function. When a computer puts down a line because it feels that that line will have some kind of impact on the viewer, then the computer will become an artist. Until that day comes, the programmer of Alan is the artist, and the computer is just a tool that he's using to express his own art. As Cohen said in the end of the article - "If the program did a drawing in August that it couldn't have done when I stopped programming it in January, then I'll consider it creative."

Ah, so Conquers: BFD, Perfect Dark, GoldenEye are all for gamers under 10? I've never seen anyone under 10 play them... Maybe you should check Nintendo's recent lineup before you comment. And anyway, Mario 64, Waverace, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Zelda: Majora's Mask and Mario Kart are still the best games out there. Nothing will ever be able to compare to those games besides the sequels Nintendo will release for the Gamecube. So if you want your little "adult" games with lots o' blood and violence, go wait for your X-Box but I play games to have fun, and Nintendo knows how to create fun games.

While computers have become pervasive in "normal" peoples lives, geeks are still looked down upon. It's still uncool to know anything more than how to connect to AOL to chat or check e-mail. Girls didn't flock to me because I preferred something other than Windows. Even now that I'm in an art school, me majoring in computer art puts some girls of because computers are still a geeky thing to like. Computer geeks may have gained some respect because "computers are where the money's at" but from my experience, they're by no means sex symbols.

There's no easy way to verify that you have bought the original record. I think the system that the record companies have implemented right now is the only way to do it unless they start putting serial numbers on every cd and having you register your copy as soon as you get it. I think it would be too much of a hassle. I don't buy the same albums on a million different mediums. I just buy a cd, and maybe rip it to mp3s and if I want, copy it to tape. It's easier and quicker to just copy it yourself instead of having the companies send out the update through the mail (which I think is the only way it can be implemented as of right now)

When did gaming take to being real? Its an escape isn't it?

So is a vacation. When a vacation can be entirely simulated in a game system, from the overpacking down to the watered down margaritas, that's when our job is complete.

Todays gaming is all about immersing the player into the environment. Soul Caliber and Tekken Tag look good, but it's still not enough. I want to put a VR helmet on my head and actually feel the punches and smell the surroundings. That would be an escape.

When they do, it will be too late because the X-Box and Gamecube will be out, will be a lot easier to program for, and will be a lot more powerful. And the Dreamcast by then will have a huge library of great, good looking games. The Saturn showed us what happens to consoles when they are hard to program for. The Saturn was more powerful than the Playstation but look who won out.
