    write only language...

I like FORTH, and I've written a lisp interpreter in FORTH. However, it isn't a language you can debug easily.

Also, it is an interpreted language, despite the fact that it has a 'COMPILE keyword. Just like python, which has a far saner syntax (if you can even say FORTH has a syntax).

What I want is the ability to write C code in a lua like interpreter, and then to convert it to compiled C after it is debugged. Unfortunately, that really doesn't work for anything except toy programs.

It shows clearly what is motivating the attackers (a desire to impose Sharia on the web - no criticism of Islam allowed, even if completely true) and it excludes those who merely are using the internet in a way the Government doesn't like (since they are not jihadis).

You are saying that the movie they are trying to supress is true? News to me...

This is probably a misguided effort by some young hackers, perhaps paid for by a rich Saudi. It is not terrorism unless you are terrified by it.

Doesn't ANYBODY remember 'Brazil'? What about those rogue duct repairmen? The concept of 'terrorism' is a tool for the state to control you. The country was much more compliant when we were cowering in our cupboards after 911, so much so that we were willing to let Cheney and Bush take us to war with a country that had not attacked us without a struggle. Even the NYTimes liked the idea of going to war after 911, it didn't much matter who with. Remember Judith Miller and the juiced up stories about WMD?

Here is a thought: 'they are only terrorists if you are terrified by them'...

Interesting post. Sorry, no mod points left.

However, there are apparently two forms of happiness. The happiness of being, and the happiness of remembering. The happiness of being is what you describe, whatever you are doing RIGHT NOW can be pleasant or unpleasant. The happiness of remembering is remembering those vacations with your kids, or remembering the violin lessons, the recitals, the fear resolving into pride, etc.

as far as creativity goes, I find that long walks are always a great way to generate ideas. I'm sure that is related to boredom. Also, being stuck in traffic jams. I never listen to the radio in the car, since that distracts me from thinking about whatever I've been obsessing on recently. The fact that YOU ARE STUCK, you can't really rescue yourself from it, and you might as well think about something useful seems to be part of it. If I was one to text friends, those moments would be lost to mindless chatter. I'd probably be happier in the short term, but less creative, as the original article suggests.

I've been investing for 40 years, and I've never known who is on the board of directors of a stock I own, other than for exceptions like companies I worked at. I guess most folks are like me, rather than like you. So, the fact that CEOs get attention makes their tenure attract or repel shareholders, whereas who is on the board has no such effect (except for perhaps day traders and other nuts).

Now, why boards don't fire directors is another matter. I guess they don't fire them because they would have to take time out of their golf games and counting their millions of dollars to find a replacement. Also, due to the regression to the mean effect, most bad directors will do better next period, so it probably makes sense. With that effect in mind, the right thing to do is fire the successful directors...

I believe that anyone who is exposed to evolution in a rational way sees that it makes way more sense than 'an old white guy hiding in the sky made the animals in a week, and also made fossils that seem to lead up to them to "test us"'. The sad part is when kids aren't exposed to evolution (or science) in a rational way, such as when they are home schooled in order to avoid it.

I suspect that NOT having creationism, er, intelligent design taught (even by a skeptic) makes it harder for parents to let their kids go to public school. So, in a way, I'm condoning the actions of these legislative idiots. At least they aren't cutting evolution science out of the textbooks (yet).
