His original article on Linux was insanely stupid. I mean, what were his points: Linux reminds me of communism, and Unix is old? At least *this* time, he wasn't stupid, he was just totally in the ozone. I suppose that's an improvement....
Exactly. The Altair wasn't very useful, but people who had one, had a lot of fun with them, and those of us who couldn't afford them lusted after them with all our hearts. I applaud this effort! It is the true spirit of Linux, and of computer science in general!!
Didn't *Microsoft* sell an 80186 upgrade card for the XT at one time? Couldn't afford it myself... I opted for the NEC V-20 chip. Cheap, and about a 33% increase in speed! Yow, baby! Those were the DAYS!
Blue (of http://www.bluesnews.com) has been singing the praises of this stuff for quite a while now. I do too, since my buddy Back East sent me a case for Xmas!! Strange, but tasty and effective. Wonderful mixer!

If it weren't for Linus, we'd have to use the superb GNU utilities on closed-source, proprietary operating systems. If Linus wanted to be an ass, I'd say he'd have a better rationale for insisting on Linux. Since he doesn't, we're allowed to call it whatever we want. And isn't that where freedom really starts? Freedom to follow your will, not someone else's?
I'd still like to give the HURD a try, and I'll even call it GNU/Hurd if that's what RMS wants!
I used to wait until I needed a feature of a new kernel to install it. I soon found that getting new libs, utilities, and learning other things that had changed can sometimes be done better incrementally. I find it easier to stay current, even if I don't *need* to be current.
Okay, I've thought enough to reach a preliminary conclusion: That's one of the most asinine comparsions I've ever read. Go find out what the Kosovars are going through, and compare that to the experience of any minority in America. The closest match you're going to find are the WWII internment camps for Japanese-Americans, and as shameful as they were, they still look pretty mild compared to full-scale ethnic cleansing.
As for this "scary form of warfare," nonsense. Can I see a show of hands? Would you rather have 1) your internet service cut off, or 2) your country relentlessly bombed? Thought so. Is my calendar mismarked? It said nothing about today being Idiot Day....
I didn't lose my ability to write normally, but after getting to a high level in Giraffe, the strain of trying to remember some obscure graffito would trigger a kind of petit-mal seizure-like state. I fought it by deliberately not practicing Graffiti. It feels a lot better to just look at chart for anything non-alphanumeric.
I can hardly wait to read all of the comments. "BeOS sucks." "BeOS is a crappy OS." "BeOS has no apps." "BeOS isn't open source."
I can hardly wait to read another gushing fluff-piece that brags about having eight! movies playing at once on the Be desktop. No bashing intended, but a lot of you Be-folk are getting a little hypersensitive. It's just not immediately obvious what the strengths of yet-another-proprietary-OS are (except the eight! movies playing at once, for those with terminal ADD, I suppose).
There are a lot of programming concepts more complex than scripts and VB crapplets. So, no, you do not make your point. I'd hire you as a sysadmin, though!:)
I have to wonder where you get your numbers (1 in 50). Are you sure that MS's product quality isn't more a result of the fact that MS's goal is making lots of money for stockholders, which is only coincidentally congruent with making good products? I do like the ACM cert idea, though. Maybe a nice code of ethics, too. I'd sure prefer a corporation-neutral, non-governmental body like ACM dishing out the certs to legal licensing.
Hey, good idea. Give this a shot, pal: boot into Windows, fire up Q3Test, and let us know how it looks. You might even find some time to put on your black trenchcoat while you're waiting for the Windows version to come out. Fleshwad.
Perhaps if there were more guns... If any of the victims of the shooting had a reasonable chance to defend themselves, the carnage might not have gone on so long. Perhaps if the trenchcoated young men had known they would have stopped a bullet instantly upon whipping out their own guns... But, they knew they wouldn't. They knew they were entering a sheep pen, where no punishment would be dealt out. Hell, if they hadn't gone out "in a blaze of glory", they could have dropped their weapons, walked out with their hands up, and we'd be seeing them on CNN. And they'd be sniffling about how no one liked them, and their parents were mean, and they'd be back on the streets (albeit after 10,000 hours of meaningless counseling) within years. After all, nothing you do is your fault in America these days! At worst, you haven't looked hard enough to find out whose fault it is! Probably devil music, drug users, internet pr0n, or violent computer game makers. The problem isn't guns, guns have been omnipresent in America for centuries. The problem is the total lack of responsiblity for one's own actions that American culture fosters. I'd like to see the parents of these kids publically flogged to death in Mile High Stadium. It won't help what happened, but other parents might just take an interest in raising human beings instead of antisocial psychopaths. But of course, why take the time to raise your kids right, when Marilyn Manson, Id Software, and Smith and Wesson can do such a good job for you?
There you go. When I read that this newfound system invalidated current theories of planet formation, my initial reaction was "Man, I hope so! What kind of theories could they possibly have based on one system?!?"
It seems to me that faith is simply a more acceptable term for mental illness. What is faith, after all, but a mindset that asserts that one believes in something for no good reason, and bases one's actions on this groundless belief? Strange, indeed. And I'm right with you on saying that the elimination of this concept would be a plus for the race.

Doesn't sound like you did any coding. For someone who wants to code, a degree program might well expose them to concepts they'll need.
