Actually, this is no longer true - the X-10 protocol was opened a couple of years ago. You can now buy X-10 protocol units from different vendors - check out Radio Shack for examples.

  2. Is Slashdot psychic now? on Gnarly Error Messages · · Score: 1

I have spent all this weekend trying to debug a message thrown by a third-party application. The message is:

unexpected exception: The parameter is incorrect

    Really usefull information, isn't it?

Of course, my all-time favorite was when I was working for Borland's Paradox tech support, back in the lovely old days of Windows 3.1. We would get frequent calls from our users: "I just got a error dialog - in the title it says "Error", but the text says "OK"!

Actually, the text said 0K (zero K) - and was ment to indicate that the printer's buffer had just run out of memory, and they should re-configure their printer driver to use less memory. One sloppy or to-busy programmer, many tech support phone calls.

  4. Re:Here's a question on Panasonic Dual-LCD PC · · Score: 2, Interesting

It's because current LCD production technology is worse than CRT - they throw away a lot of monitors. Here's the process:
    1. manufacture the complete LCD screen
    2. Test to see how many 'defective' dots there are
    3. If too many defects are seen in the screen (either total number, or too many next to eachother, or...), throw it away.
    4. Use what's left.
That's why large LCD screens have not been made - the larger the screen, the more defective dots you get.

  5. Re:The shared bandwidth problem on Cable Sprints, DSL Trudges, Free ISPs Pant · · Score: 1

Actually, this argument is (at least partially) a red herring itself. The very fact you mention (Cable is shared the entire way, while DSL starts sharing at the phone company) makes it much more difficult to upgrade a cable pipe when it does start getting impacted. For DSL, it's a lot easier to upgrade the outgoing pipe and possibly the routing equipment - without having to do a lot of work out of the POP.

You can actually sign your cards 'Ask for ID' (No name needed).
However, this does not work all the time. I have this on all my cards, but only about half the time do I get asked for ID - and about a fifth of the time, they LOOK AT THE BACK, then hand the card back!!!!! However - it will make it more difficult for an idiot (aka most of the population - as proven by the cashiers!) to use the card if it is stolen.

According to the GSM spec (and the VisorPhone FAQ) - there is a SIM card you can switch between a normal phone and a VisorPhone. Now, if they only had the coverage...
