I have written a few applications in Java. I actually like it. If you want to write a database driven application that is also multi threaded I think it is just great. If you need to be multi-platform it is the best solution that I have found. QT is close also. The speed argument is old and should be tossed. Swing isn't slow or nasty anymore and is pretty speedy. SWT is also pretty nice. Try Jedit, Netbeans, or Eclipse to see what a nice java application can feel like. If you haven't used the latest version of Java I suggest you try it.
I have even found good uses for java appletts. Yes I know they got a bad name because way to many idiots "Microsoft I am looking right at you" used them for stupid things like hover buttons.
Java is a a good free as in beer and free now free as in GPL RAD system.
As far as it not mattering? Well a lot of people make a living writing Java. I just saw a Story on slashdot about a guy running java on a Cluster to do modeling. As far as Java being to big for anybody to use it for anything practical... Well JEdit, Netbeans, Eclipse, OpenOffice, and thousands of cell phone programs all say BALONEY.
You are probably correct but you do understand that 99.999% of the people can not tell the difference between Arial and Helvetica. Just like with wine all we care about is that they are easy to read and pleasing to the eye. That is the big problem I have found with these Freedom fonts. To me they are just not easy to read.
You see I would love to see a comparison of the size of the webpage including images vs the memory foot print to render them. Of course jpegs, gifs, and pngs are compressed but it would still be interesting to see just how efficient the browsers are.
Hey you put a critical facility an a zone one evac zone then it is your own fault. Zone one means that it is very close to the water. Also you never get 24 hours notice. The NHC has a great site. If you are in Florida you watch it. It is very rare that you ever get less than 72 hours notice and of all the storms in the last 20 years that have hit Florida there was at least 48 hours of warning. The problem is way to many people take a look at the projected path and ignore the cone. If you are the cone you are in the path as far as planning goes. So your boss located a critical facility in a Stage one evacuation zone and had not disaster plan at all. There is no place on this planet that is secure enough for that level of planning. Florida really isn't any worse of a state to locate a data center in disaster wise then any other state.
Exactly don't build your data center on the beach and have a backup generator and you are not in that much danger. Unless your a lot older than I am Ft Myers wasn't been decimated in my life time. As I said I have been through six hurricanes in my lifetime. And I mean through as in the eye passed over me. At no time did the home I was in suffer any real damage. Compared to earthquakes, tornadoes, flooding, or any of a number of other issues they are pretty rare, mild, and easy to plan for.
Why did he build it in a Stage 1 evacuation zone? That is an avoidable problem. But before you get all bent. How long had it been since the last evacuation? How much damage was done to the facility? Did you have backup power? If so how long was the facility unavailable. But like I said that is a totally avoidable risk. Who puts a critical facility that close to the water in ANY coastal area? Hurricanes can hit anywhere on the east cost of the US from South Texas to Maine.
As far as the great lakes thing. Well maybe but I have no idea how fast the great lakes get deep. Deep water really runs up the cost. Now the tide thing? probably not. Tidal systems are only practical in limited areas. What I want to know is why is it almost invisable during the summer but not the winter? That seems very odd to me.
Tampa hasn't been hit by many Hurricanes. They don't have issues with flooding that I know about and lightning is lightning. It can happen anywhere just do your best to protect your systems from it. If you are a few miles inland in Florida Hurricanes are not that big of an issue. If you have a good backup generator then it isn't that big of a problem. Oh did I mention I was born, live, and work in Florida. My office was hit by Frances, Jean, and Wilma. Total damage to the office... Nothing. Total Damage to my home? Three shingles. Florida doesn't tend to suffer from wide spread flooding like places in the midwest and really strong hurricanes like Andrew are actually very rare. Most hurricanes in Florida would be a none event if our power company kept the power up. We call Florida Power and Light Florida Flicker and Flash. For a data center a backup power system is really all you need.
While you are pretty much voicing the most extreme version Libertarianism it is all too often the one version I hear from most Libertarians. Just like comunisum and the works of Ayn Ryand all sound good to start with it soon sounds ends up a big mess.
"For all practical purposes our Founding Fathers WERE Libertarians and the system didn't devolve into some sort of Lord of the Flies you envision." That seems pretty close to me. It was mostly a joke that they scare me. For the most part I don't worry about them since they are so far out that there is no way they can do much harm. As a whole they don't seem willing to resort to violence to make their point so as long as they are none violent they will be just a harmless curiosity that can do no real harm.
"A binary driver is worse than no driver, because it removes much of the incentive to write a Free one." Unless you want to print and not have to buy a new printer.
Why in the Kernel. That is what drives me nuts. Why do we have to have stinking web cam, printer and goodness knows what else drivers in the Kernel! Yes I know Linux is a monolithic kernel and that is why but good grief that just seems like a bad idea. I didn't think that printers did need to be in the Kernel I thought they used a CUPS driver but I will admit that I don't mess with printers on Linux much. Wouldn't it be better to move some drivers out of the kernel? I mean should a bad web cam or printer driver really take down a system? I really think that Linux needs to offer a stable binary driver interface and offer a microkernal like interface for some less critical drivers.
"There were certainly some serious violations of liberty (slavery and equal rights for instance), but if you look at the way the Federal Government was VERY Libertarian in nature." That statment and disconnect from reality show exactly why I find libertarians scary. The "This is what the founding fathers meant" is just another from of rapping a political agenda in the flag. The first thing that the founding fathers did was to put government controls on the production of alcohol. So no you have and any libertarian that claims that they are just doing what the founding fathers would do are just nuts.
One they don't want to bring us back to the ideals of the founding fathers that is myth one. The founding fathers supported slavery and didn't support women's rights. Both of which I consider bad ideas. Do you really think that they would support any form of equal rights? Unless you think you know how they would think if they where born in our times. BTW if you think you know that they are are just flipping nuts.
Libertarians are scary because they have a totally unrealistic view on the world and at the same time are totally sure that they have the one true vision just like every other flavor of extremist. As somebody on slashdot once said,"one look at any online community will show you why Libertarianism will never work". The real answer is that their probably isn't just one answer. Some government protections and regulation is a good thing. Too much can be bad. Some social safety nets are great. To many and people can become dependent. Even free speech is only good in moderation. Free speech doesn't mean you can yell fire in a theater and it shouldn't mean that you have the right to shutdown a speaker just because you don't like what they want to say.
Then you have the other issue. This is an IPTV box. Does the author own it or does his IPTV provider own it and includes it in their service? Who was the code distributed too? As I said I would contact the company first before screaming bloody murder.
"We can hate Microsoft but as a libertarian, I find this development scary. " That is okay I find libertarians scary.
This is part of the punishment that Microsoft received. A pretty ineffective one if you ask me but still one of them. This isn't a precrime this is probation.
What all three of them? Really what percentage of the worlds population lives in none UN member nations? Last time I checked it was one or two? Vatican City and Taiwan if you count Taiwan as a nation. In other words I think this was just made up.
Does .Net run on Linux? Well sort of if your careful about what you use? The Mac?, BSD, Solaris?
I have not messed with .NET and it might be pretty nice but does that make Java irrelevant?

So we are left supporting one big wonky platform with no real hope of it ever getting better. Sorry but Vista and wonky really do go together.
Funny I don't find them scary.
We are all using X86 CPUs. It looks as is we will all use Windows or a version of Unix.
Yea it has become a stable and rather dull industry.
Except that an Orgy doesn't have to mean anything sexual or porn.

No that is also the problem there are a LOT of really bad answers as well.
There really are not 300 million best answers.
