"According to several Discover channel and History channel shows, there are contractors working on insect spy technology." Yea the keys here are 1.Discover channel. and 2. working on.
I have books from the 60s about walking robots that the Army was working on to replace jeeps.
I stick with a working insect sized spy bot as being in the "almost magical technology" category. Notice I did use term almost. Frankly a modern laptop would be well in to the rage of "almost magical" in 1969.
No the "man" used film for spy sats, and big slow computers that took up multiple racks in state of the art nuclear subs just to protect the really high tech stuff they used for other things. I am sure the NSA has some really amazing toys but robotic bugs over a peace protest? Now a UAV the size of a hawk or maybe a blue jay I would give you as a real possibility but not a dragonfly.
Well considering that most people can not tell the difference between two cars, two airplanes, or two snakes I would say that this is a none story. One nut case in a group of protesters that are sure that. 1. Each and every one of them is SO important to the peace movement that there is a whole team dedicated to watching there every move. 2. The government is just one step away from throwing them into a re eduction camp. 3. That the government not only has the technology to build robot bug but also cars that get 300 MPG an run on water.
Finally why would they use them over of all things an anti-war protest? I mean if you want to spy on them you send in agents with small cameras and MK1 eyeballs and ears. It would be cheaper and far more effective. If you wanted to test them then a better test would be over a military base or exercise. You would be trying to defeat trained observers then. If you wanted to test them with untrained observers in the wild then just about any sporting event right down to a high school football game would do and again be less likely to end up in the Washington Post. Test it in Iowa or any of the other "fly over" states that the Post doesn't know exists.
So it comes down to these two options. a. The government of the US can create almost magical technology and then is stupid enough to use it in this manner. or b. Someone at a anti-war protest thinks they see robotic spy bug and tells other like minded people that they saw a spy bug who are then sure they saw a spy bug......
"I don't want to come off as paranoid because I hate conspiracy theorists, but the technology we all enjoy today was invented in the 60's." Not it wasn't. In the 1960s and 70s spy sats still dropped film back to earth using a parachute because they didn't have high the digital imaging that you can find in the average digital camera. Nuclear submarines would have killed for the computing power found in a Pentium 66. So yes you are coming off as paranoid.
I wasn't trying to be pompous. I was giving an example of how bad people really can be. Frankly you rattleing me was getting me to the point where I thought you where about as usful to this planet as sandspurs and fireants.
No actually my company migrated to Linux years ago. But we didn't have anything that was dependent on Novell. Our problem now is that we have two systems that are dependent on Windows servers. One is the accounting system the other is our CMS. We will be migrating our CMS soon. The Accounting system just works. The thing is change for the sake of change is worthless. If your systems work and are still supported which Novell is then there is no reason to rush into a migration.
"Presumably the reason you are sticking with a platform that has not really changed much in a decade is because you are too risk-averse to jump to something else." Not at all. The reason is because it works. Netware still works just fine for a lot of companies. It really was/is a very good server. A company may have a LOT of money already invested in Netware Services that work just fine and dandy. So if you can still get support why go through the cost and time to re-write you code? There are still multi-million dollar cooperations that depend on code written in COBOL. If you have people know how to run your Netware network, and it works why change? You can always add new services with Linux while running Netware under Zen. This is a brillant solution for people still dependent on Netware.
"Should they use MFC? " No, Never, No WAY... I have used MFC and it stinks on ice. It is buggy and just a terrible frame work. We just found a new but in MFC that would cause our application to crash when it got on unexpected message from a touch pad driver. Yea the driver had a bug but MFC shouldn't have crashed from that message. So you should stay clear of MFC even on Windows.
Nothing is free. And the cost of managing 300+ million email forwarding would not be virtually nothing. As the song says everything counts in large amounts. The good thing is that it is a dumb idea and I don't have to worry about it happening anytime soon. Go get a gmail account and set it to forward your mail. Your problem is solved.
Well for one I am not willing to see children suffer and die. I do pay with my tax money and I find that of all the services that I do pay for with my tax money providing vaccinations for children is one of the best and frankly one of the most cost effective uses of my tax money. Also I don't think you understand how vaccinations work. They are not 100% effective. They function in two ways. One they provide protection for a large percentage of the people vaccinated and they reduce the totally number of v irises in the environment. So even if you didn't get 100% immunization you get a benefit from all the people around you being immunized. So the more people around you that are immunized the better protected you and your children are. Second you can not deport poor people. Not everyone getting the free immunizations are illegals. So we are providing them anyway. Third it is wrong to punish children for the actions of their parents. Those kids didn't come sneak into the US by themselves their parents brought them. Some of them are US citizens because under US law if you where born here you are a citizen.
Sorry but punishing children for the actions of their parents is wrong. Being too cheap to pay for vacinations for all children is wrong and frankly counter productive when it comes to total monetary costs of health care. And being willing to see children suffer and die just because their parents brought them to the US and are acting in a way that you feel is irresponsible makes you a fool that hasn't thought things through or a cruel heartless monster devoid of human compassion.
That and there is still IBM sitting back. Since IBM has patents on everything having to do with computers they are the 10,000 lb monster. Microsoft knows that they are probably infringing on many IBM patents. Will IBM step up if they themselves are not directly threatened. Maybe and maybe not. Also I believe that patents allow individuals to pretty much ignore patented material for educational use. That would seem to open a rather large loop hole for FOSS. software. I have to think this is all FUD. The simple reason is that Google is Microsoft's biggest threat right now. They probably run more Linux machines than anybody on the planet. If Microsoft had a really strong case they would go after Google. With a less strong case they might go after RedHat since RedHats pockets just are not that deep. The REAL danger for Microsoft is that if they threaten anybody with enough cash then the entire idea of software patents will go on trial. If that happens there is a chance that the house of cards will come falling down. The other issue is that I don't think Europe allows software patents. Microsoft is already in big trouble with the EU. Trying to enforce software patents could cause the EU to take even stronger action towards Microsoft.
"Good thing they had not thought of that before. Otherwise, they might have pointed out to you that ultimitely it was "God's" decision, and if he is willing to sit by and watch, they would not be in a position to argue." Nope it is an opportunity to do some good in the world and to act selflessly. If you fail to do good that is also a sin. It is a sin of omission.
They are usually young. Of course if they get sick then everything changes. A true story. I was going into a grocery store near my office to pickup some diet soda. There was a group trying to get people to sign a petition that would stop free inoculations for the children of illegal immigrants. I kind of lost it with them. I asked them if they wanted to see children in iron lungs again? Did they realize that vaccines where not 100% effective and if there where a large population that wasn't inoculated that it would increase the chance that they, there grand children, or their children might get sick with polo? I finally ask them "Do you believe in a God? How do you think God would feel about you being so selfish that you will allow children to get sick and or die because of your greed!" They actually left at that point. So yes their are people like that. And you will see them post on Slashdot a lot.
Actually it was more of a comment to all the EU is great the US sucks bashers that I see here on Slashdot. I just hope that the EU doesn't get as carried away with personal injury lawsuits as the US has. There is a place by my office that has cups with this warning label. "Warning Hot Drinks served Hot..."
Many years ago I was in Ireland and went to visit some cliffs. There was a wall on meter tall well back from the cliffs. On that wall as a warning sign to not cross go past that wall. Everybody was just stepping over the wall and walking right up to the cliffs. I did the same and the view was great. I asked one of the locals why the wall was so easy to climb over. I mentioned that in the US if they did that and fell they would sue the daylight out of somebody. The man looked at me and said, "In Ireland we figure that if you step over the wall and fall it is your own bloody fault." Smart people the Irish.
Yep and frankly anyone that thinks Email is any more private than a postcard is an idiot. Just a news flash but your email is sent across the internet as plain text! It is not secure in any way shape or form. If you want email a private massage then you should encrypt it and send it as an attachment. I don't care if it is hotmail, gmail, or outlook.
Well for one thing email isn't an essential service. Second have you seen the postal service? It has gotten better but mainly because of competition from the likes of UPS and FedEX. Third you can have your portable email address a few different ways already. You could get your own domain with a service provider and to email forwarding for probably less than $5 a month. Or you could use gmail, Hotmail, and or Yahoo mail, or your University might offer an alumni email address for free. Fourth you are right that this is a democracy and I and I think think the majority of the people in it feel that a government run email service would be a terrible waste of money. Many private groups all ready provide that service and do a very good job at a very reasonable cost. I doubt that a government run agency could improve the service or lower the cost. In fact I would be willing to bet that it would cost more in taxes and or service fees than the current system for a very dubious cost. Finally while a portable email address is convent it isn't necessary or even traditional. When you move your postal address changes. When you move your phone number often changes since they tend to be geographically based. So yes it is a bad idea. Using foul language will not really change it. And yes I would be totally against it as a political goal. So I am sorry that you are too cheap and lazy to get what you want but in this case I would have to say. If you don't want it enough to do this simple thing yourself then it is not important enough for the government to do it.
Umm. So if Outlook doesn't support it it then it is more or less proprietary? Sorry but Microsoft's complete lack of support for a well documented open file format does in no way make it proprietary. It just shows Microsoft's complete contempt for interoperability.

Umm why?
Just post it on the web.
Pretty much. It will be a bad car or a bad plane or most likly both.
But not for the Touch. I would love a Touch but I want to add my own apps to it.

It could only happen in America. The Us has a broken legal system. Thank goodness nothing that stupid could ever happen in the EU...
Oh never mind.
