Yes but you will have to make a roll call and then try and figure out where they guys that are missing where at the time of the fire. At times like a fire every minute counts.
"Where can I get some of this fire that doesn't damage WiFi equipment/cables/sensors/computers?" That is the thing you don't need any for my example to work. When the fire breaks out people do evacuate the wifi equipment will still be functioning so they will see everybody that is clear of the fire. So you know who is safe in a fraction of a second. So in a few minutes you would know that Bill, Fred, and Joe are missing. Once you know who is safe you can go back to the records and see where the missing people where when you lost their position. So now you know Bill, Fred, and, Joe where on the gangway between pump room 6 and condenser 11 when the fire started and then started to run to station 14 when you lost contact with them. You can then start your search where you knew they last where. So you send the fire fighters to the area between the gangway and station 14 to start looking for Bill, Fred, and Joe. Hopefully to find them alive and get them out of harm's way. No not perfect but better than what you would have today.
Don't forget that fire isn't the big killer, smoke is. If the Base stations have a battery backup they will stay functioning is environments that would be very life threatening to people. After all if the fire is bad enough to take out a base station there is also a good chance that it will kill any person near it. Finding the dead isn't nearly as time critical as finding the soon to be dead that are in smoke filled rooms. If you think it through then you can see some value in it.
Actually it make is a good idea in lots of environments. Think of an Oil Refinery. I will use a fire as an example since so many people don't get how this could be helpful. A fire breaks out in part of the refinery. When the fire fighters get there they would know where everybody that got clear of the fire was instantly because there tags would be near safe and functions base stations. Anyone that might still be in danger you would have at least their last known location to start looking for them.
An other example is at NASA. Many years ago some employees at KSC died because they where in an area that was then flushed with Nitrogen during a test. Or any large corporate campus. It could be handy to find someone instead of having to call them on the cell phone. It could also be used as a form of local navigation on a large campus. Suppose you needed to go to Joe Browns office but you didn't know where Joe Browns office is. An RFID and WiFi enabled device could direct you to his office with a little effort.. When I have time I was going to try and do the same thing with BlueTooth so I could track where a Blue Tooth enabled phone was near my office by the single strength of the device.
And yes even for a College it makes sense. Imagine if your PDA could direct you to each of your classes on your first day? Yes it could be abused for tracking proposes but it could be very useful.
"So I wonder if iTunes 1.0 is all cosy and content if you plug a 2G Nano into it... ?" Actually a better question is can you still put music you bought with iTunes 1 onto your new iPod. The answer I believe is yes.
Play for sure is from Microsoft. Zune is from Microsoft. IPod is from Apple. I could be wrong but don't even the first Gen iPods work with the current iTunes?
"Wouldn't it be better to work on making Firefox faster, smaller memory footprint, and a safer web browser (serious investigation in JavaScript vulnerabilities etc) compared to IE?" Moving from XML style bookmarks to SQLLite Bookmarks will. 1. Use less memory. 2. Be faster. So it does do two of the things you want. I am not a big fan of XML. It is often used for things it shouldn't be.
Actually there are many good reasons to keep using FORTRAN. My it's structure FORTRAN is very easy to optimize and there is a lot of existing code libraries for it.
C++ is still alive and well. I think they are wrong since C is still used on a lot of embedded systems where C++ is too heavy. BTW a good number of HPC tools and applications are still written in FORTRAN.
I live in a state with no State income tax so we don't get any tax forms. They do make an effort to collect sales tax on big ticket item like cars but for mail order they just let it go.
Most people only buy a computer every two or three years so an hours drive for a better selection seems like a good trade off. My family used to drive about two hours to the nearest Mall twice a year. In the Fall for school cloths and in December for Christmas shopping. Not like getting a loaf of bread and a carton of milk.
"Vista took too long to develop, does not work and is not selling." Yes, no, and well sort of yes and sort of no. Vista isn't selling like 95 or XP did when people where really excited about this new wonderful version. People are using it and more will when DX-10 games are out and are considered must have. Vista works. It does work. It isn't really any better for 99% of all end users than XP and rankly it is still a down grade for many. It runs needs more memory and electricity to do the same job as XP does. It isn't a great value that is for sure.
"Office is being escaped by real standards based productivity apps which can no longer be fought off. " Not really. While I do use OO.org what is killing Office sales is Office. Office 2000 and Office 2003 does everything that you need an office suite to do. Office has been good enough for years now and here is the real dirty secret that Microsoft hates. Software doesn't wear out. Why do you think Microsoft really wants to go with the software as a service model? XP is what is hurting Vista and Office is that is hurting Office. The old versions of both are good enough. Frankly for most people you don't need a computer every 3 years unless your a gamer so those are now good enough as well so fewer sales of new systems with Vista. OO.org has started to make a dent with Governments because they hate the idea of their documents being controlled by a single source vendor. Which frankly is a brilliant idea IMHO. But what we are seeing is a mature market where the software is good enough to not rush to upgrade.
Just to be fair here is the ugly truth for Open Source. OO.org isn't better than Office. It is good enough and free. I keep hoping that someday OO.org will be better than Office but it just isn't yet. What it is is good enough, has an open document format, and free.
The real problem I see is simply does WalMart sell a lot of computers? Yea back in the Commodore-64 days maybe but these days I would think that most people buy computers at Best Buy, CompUSA, or Circus City or any of the other Big Box electronics stores. Could be wrong but that is they way I see it.
"Right now ALL retailers and people are required to pay sales tax on out of state items (depending on your state)" Ummm... Huh?
States are forbidden from taxing interstate commerce. In some states if you buy something from out of state you the customer are supposed to pay the tax.
How can ALL the Retailers be required to pays sales tax on out of state items (depending on your state)? 1. I don't think you know what the world ALL means. 2. It isn't true. You must pay sales tax if you have a presence in that state. If you have a store, sales rep, office, or warehouse.
That can all be faked. It wasn't in this case but it can be faked. I had an Uncle that served in WWII in Europe. He wasn't Jewish and helped liberate one of the camps so on top of all the proof we have in the public record I have a good bit more. He was a very good man BTW. Was reported KIA to his family twice. Had some terrible burns on his arms from when his tank got hit. In his later life he helped to raise money for our local hospital and worked at Cape Kennedy during the Apollo launches. He died of lung cancer in the early 80s. He never smoked a day in his live but they lined the US tanks with Asbestos and his got hit so I am betting that may have been the cause. Yea it is off topic but it is good to remember sometimes.
Do it right the first time? Spoken like someone that has never written software. Every time you write a piece of code you improve it you may find a new way of doing something. Also as more and more programs come out that use the driver they people that write them will gain a better understanding of how they are used. That will help them optimize a code path. It could be as simple as selecting which branch tends to be used more and making that the default path. The something is used the more performance you can get out of it.
"I personally think we are maybe 10 years away from finding an impenetrable body armor solution. " No. Impenetrable by what? Pistol rounds? Got that. Rifle rounds? What rifle? I have seen a 50 cal sniper rifle firing AP rounds. It can shoot through buildings. How good will rounds get in 10 years. Might we see tungsten sabot rounds for rifles?
"Most people would react badly to that sort of situation, some fatally so. Doesn't really make them a threat in the workplace." Yes reacting to it is to expected to do so fatally is outside the realm of normal behavior. That is just nuts. People will have stressful situations many times in their lives. A person that reacts with deadly violence when there is no physical threat to them is not in the realm of normal. My work place is stressful so no I wouldn't hire him. If I ran a florist and needed someone to arrange flowers then maybe. Any kind of software support or development job? Not a chance.
"The question is too vague." Not at all. Two people, both have equal qualification except one is a convicted felon the other isn't. Often times when interviewing people you will have more than one person that could do the job. In this case would you hold the felony against the candidate or would you hold the not having a felony against the candidate.
"Sure, if you find out about it."
So you spent five years in India? Where did you go? What did you do? How do you say where is the bathroom in Hindi? Did you go to Goa? Did you see the Cathedral in Dehli? I hear it is beautiful. Where did you fly into? What airport did you leave from? Did you celibate Diwali? What was that all about?
Sorry but lying in an interview is a lot harder than you might expect. If something is as out of the ordinary as taking a few years off and going to India or Europe I would check that out in depth. Had a guy that claimed to have flown F-14s apply once. Asked him if he had problems with the TF-30s his answer was, "No I learned on T-38s." Sorry Mr. Cruise but we don't need you. Europe wouldn't be much easier. I have access to people that have lived in at least six countries in Europe I could call in.
Well what it comes down to is the author finds these games boring and makes the common mistake of thinking everybody feels the same. Everybody thinks different things are boring. I like to read books about physics but I could care less the name of Madonna's husband/boyfriend. To me the fundamental structure of all of creation is more exciting than a celebrity's love life. But let's face it I am in the minority.
However freedom of speech does mean you have freedom of actions. The school clearly stated that this was done because. 1. He took a video camera into the class room. 2. He videoed a class with out permission. 3. He as dancing around behind the teachers back and mocking her in class. All three violate school rules. A good rule for life is this. If you are going to do something stupid and in violation of the law or school rules. Don't videotape it and post it on YouTube.
It doesn't have to run Windows software all. It needs Linux versions of software. I run Linux and Windows at home as does my wife. I use Windows for games and my wife uses Windows for Games,Quicken, TaxCut, and Photoshop Elements.
If I could get the games I want to run under Linux that is all I would use. If my wife could get Games, Quicken, TaxCut and Photoshop Elements to run under Linux she would be good to go. BTW my wife is very good with Gimp and uses that as well but there are somethings PSE is better for. She do so things in both that I can not so I will trust her on this.
Windows XP doesn't suck but it isn't all that great. I really see Quicken and Tax software being two of the big things stoping people from using Linux all the time. Get those running on Linux and A lot of people will not need Windows. The other thing that Windows has going for it is that it looks free. You get it free when you buy a computer.
"Depends: what's the felony for? Aggravated assault in a barfight is different from rape is different from shooting the guy in bed with your wife. The first two would probably DQ the ex con, while the third isn't a factor. My point here is that getting a felony for shooting the guy in bed with your wife isn't really relevant to most jobs I can think of." One you didn't answer the question. The question is you have two people that are equally qualified for a job. One that has never committed a felony and on that has. Which do you pick? Two you are in idiot. Yes shooting a guy in bed with his wife is totally relevant to many if not every job. It shows that a person will act violently and with murderous intent if he feels that he is slighted. It show that he can not control his emotions and doesn't consider that consequences of his actions. Good grief.
"Oh, and the gap can always be explained as bumming around europe/india, especially if it falls into the hothead years" Then you lied on the resume and that would disqualify you for employment.
The police don't do background checks for School Bus drivers. Often time the school bus driver does. The police don't do the background hecks for a senior citizen home or an Airline the company does. And I am not preventing someone from getting a job. They chose to commit a felony. I have hired people with a record. To be honest they have had about an 95% failure rate. The simple fact is committing a crime and going to jail will make getting a good job very hard. Just as not finishing high school will make it hard, not finishing college will make it hard, or not learning to read. Nobody can go though life without facing the consequences of their actions. Committing a felony has consequences that go beyond jail time. Yes it will make it hard but not impossible and frankly you will have to work a lot harder than someone that never went to jail. That is the way of the world. If you don't think it is fair then start your own company and recruit people that have served jail time. Stop complaining and do it differently. Here is a question for you. If you had two equally qualified people interviewing with you and one had a perfectly clean record. They had done everything correctly their entire life and the other was a convicted felon which would you hire? BTW you don't have to use public records to find out. Unless they lied on their resume you will see a big gap between jobs and of course you will ask why that is.
So you think it is none of anyone's business if a person running for Judge has multiple convictions for taking bribes? A person with a record of abusing the elderly running and retirement home? A convicted drunk driver continuing to fly airliners or drive a school bus? What you say sounds good. You go to jail and start fresh. Too bad it just doesn't work out in real life. You asked me to think about it but here is one for you. What better way to judge a person than by their actions. Every time you hire an employee, choose a friend, pick an enemy, go on a date, or choose a spouse you are judging that person. What better way to judge a person than by the actions they have taken and the choices they have made?
