Linus puts dumbasses in their place to keep the project running smoothly. Jobs was a sociopath. I guess both could be called "assholes", but they are very different kinds of "asshole".
Of course, with $35 million in annual revenue, who can afford to take care of the animals, what with paying all the salaries for the people working for PETA to exploit them? PETA's job is to raise funds to pay PETA salaries.
Because it's a higher priority to maximize the volume of the train car (i.e. more passengers), and to make the cars easily attachable to each other, than it is to slightly increase the aerodynamic efficiency of a relatively low-speed vehicle.
India is at 2.51. In 2007 it was at 2.81. So if this trend continues, in a couple decades it will be below replacement.
Philippines is at 3.06. Right now the Philippines has very low per capita income - roughly comparable to India and Syria. Once this rises, the birthrate will probably drop. In any case, the Philippines forms less than 2% of the world's population and is not going to drive world population growth.
So basically the main issue is Africa. And really Africa has bigger issues than overpopulation, like civil war and dictatorship and malnutrition and malaria. But all these issues are connected to each other. If you can somehow help with one issue (I'm not saying that it's easy) then Africans will have more resources to put into defeating the others.
You are several decades out of date. The entire developed world has under-replacement fertility except for a few close-knit religious communities like the Amish. Even China has just 1.5 kids per pair of parents now. India is at 2.5 and rapidly decreasing. The only countries with exploding population are in Africa, plus a couple outliers elsewhere like Afghanistan. Once African countries start to have significant economic growth - and some major ones like Nigeria and Ethiopia are heading in that direction already - then birthrates will almost certainly drop there as well. At that point, there will be no more population crisis.
The incredibly creative C student gets an internship in a design or studio company, does creative things, and is rewarded with a job once the company (or a different company) decides such a creative person is worth paying for.
What the Bans actually are is a ban on Scary Looking Rifles.
Well then, what's the big deal? You can still actualize your 2nd Amendment rights by purchasing a non-scary-looking rifle that does the exact same thing.
Really though, we should ban all guns that are not bright pink in color. If you're a teenager or gangster who wants a gun to show off your machismo, that will get in the way. If you actually need the gun for defense, you won't care about the color.
What Mill called "liberalism" is close to what is now called libertarianism. What Mill called "conservativism" is a form of mercantilist elitism, closely related to the crony capitalism practiced by both major parties in the US, and (it seems) also common nowadays in the UK.
Actually, the cost of subsidizing solar and wind has doubled the cost of power in Germany. Not only is that inflicting pain on consumers, German manufacturing is finding it hard to compete with countries where energy is cheaper.
If the subsidies funnel more money towards solar R&D... and that the same time weak Southern European economies are better able to compete with Germany due to Germany's high electricity costs, thus saving the euro... then everyone wins! Except German consumers.
From a "inhuman psychopathic capitalist" perspective, you shouldn't even think about competing with Malaysian slaveowners. Rather, you should *become* a Malaysian slaveowner. Purchase a company in Malaysia whose workforce is slaves.
Of course, it's not practical for everyone to do that. But if you're one of the inhuman psychopathic capitalists in the US, then why not? It's not in the interests of the US workforce or the US population as a whole. But it's in YOUR interest. So you'll do it.
I think a more likely hypothesis is that Muslim countries train large numbers of engineers (why that is is a good question - my experience in the US is that Muslims are overrepresented in certain engineering fields too), but Muslim economies are unable to employ all those engineers, so they (the engineers) become bitter and frustrated and susceptible to radical ideologies.
Cross functional, diverse work teams are very beneficial to most companies. I've been working with our IT group for the past year to get updates made to the system my group makes. The only guy in that group that had any decent communication skills (he was also a very good programmer) bailed 2 months ago. Now progress is at a standstill because they do not have the confidence to talk to the customer (which is me in this case).
In other words, a team is successful if some of its members have communications skills as well as programming skills. I agree.
But there are plenty of CS grads with communication skills, and plenty of LA grads without communications skills. The LA degree, in an of itself, proves nothing. Perhaps if LA students would stop thinking they are employable just because their parents paid for an expensive degree at a selective college, and start thinking in terms of the practical skills they may or may not have, they would be much less disappointed once they hit the job market.
Some of the women I know complain that the clothes they buy don't have pockets, and so they are forced to carry some sort of bag wherever they go, if only to hold the phone.
I could imagine that a watch which had basic cell phone functionality would be great for such women. It would have to be a stylish and pretty-looking phone (apparently the problem with pockets in women's clothes is that they obscure the female figure - completely unacceptable!). I have no idea how to combine a large-ish LCD screen with the kind of style that is currently accepted for women's watches. But just like I am good at innovating technological solutions, somewhere out there is a designer who is good at innovating fashion solutions. Put two such people together, and you might end up with a device that would appeal to a very large market segment.
It's more due to the melting of the gigantic glaciers that once covered much of North America during the Ice Ages, like they now cover Greenland. The little glaciers sitting on tops of mountains, which are now melting due to global warming, have a much smaller effect.

Put them in a sealed room with a gay puppy and enough cudgels to go around. Problem solved :)
Reminds me of the Westboro Baptist Church...
Of course, the number of C. dificile infections is not doubling every few weeks these days.

No college degree necessary.
You might try asking that question to Marshall Mathers.

This comment is actually interesting, not redundant...

Seriously. How can a 19th century ship be compared in importance to, say, the Dead Sea Scrolls?
He doesn't need friends. He already has oil, gas, and nukes.

Large portions of North America and Europe are currently rising because the weight of glaciers that once pushed them down has been removed.
