I'd have to disagree. I can't even count the number of times I have found the answer to the question that was keeping me from moving on and out of "the Zone". To sum it up in one word...Google. Enough said.

the fact that i, the consumer, want to be able to watch a purchased dvd on hardware i purchased under the OS of my choice should be the ONLY impression a corp needs. it is this little thing called supply/demand i heard of once upon a time, not maxamize profits at all costs (and the cost probably shouldn't be the source of the revenue - me a.k.a. the consumer).
moderate as a rant - i don't care - i am too sick and tired of all this BS to be civil about this anymore

the credibility of the quote and nothing more.
i know this is sort of an old post, but i (like a lot of people) read slashdot with a Score: 3 comment threshhold. now, it is easy to pick out a couple letters in the wrong order, but if a post gets a score >= 3, shouldn't PERTINENT corrections be at least that high?

My standard (POS) ruler measured a 2 3/8" radius disc and a 7/8" radius 'unuseable' center.
Math (Area of a circle = pi*radius^2): pi * 2.375^2 = 17.721 sq.in. pi * 0.875^2 = 2.405 sq.in. 17.721 - 2.405 = 15.316 sq.in. ('useable' area on a CD) 650MB / 15.316 sq/in = 42.44MB sq.in.
So, a typical 650MB CD holds 42.44MB/sq.in. 800x's this is 270 gigabits/sq.in. (42.22 * 800 = 33776 MB/sq.in = 33.776GB/sq.in * 8 bits/byte = 270 gigabits/sq.in.)
400 gigabits/sq.in. / 8 bits/byte = 50 gigabytes/sq.in. That would make 765.8GB CD sized disc (245.8GB LARGER that 800x a CD)
So 800 times translates into 270.208 gigabits a square inch. (~130 gigbits/sq.in. SMALLER than 400)
Conclusion(s): 400 gigabits a square inch is ~1178 times, or 800 times is ~270 gigabits a square inch.
a) my math is wrong (most likely) b)... ??? c) all of the above d) none of the above
Disclaimers: I know this is an old post but I was reading through and thought I'd try the math. Also, please excuse the scatterbrained and redundant presentation.
been reading/. for a while now and never thought i'd post, but all i have to say is AMEN. the same statement you quote in your header pricked my attention me the moment i read it. THANK YOU and AMEN again. that's all.
Also, make sure the firmware is the same (and up to date) on all the drives.

I am not sure about a VM, but I remember reading about an extension to C someone wrote to do this for FPGA programming.

Currently a CD holds 650 MB of data
... ???
650MB * 800 = 520000 MB or 520 GB
My standard (POS) ruler measured a 2 3/8" radius disc and a 7/8" radius 'unuseable' center.
Math (Area of a circle = pi*radius^2):
pi * 2.375^2 = 17.721 sq.in.
pi * 0.875^2 = 2.405 sq.in.
17.721 - 2.405 = 15.316 sq.in. ('useable' area on a CD)
650MB / 15.316 sq/in = 42.44MB sq.in.

Conclusion(s):
400 gigabits a square inch is ~1178 times, or
800 times is ~270 gigabits a square inch.
