In general, the people reading slashdot are left leaning, like universities have become. You can not imagine how someone could hate/mistrust an institution that echoes all your thinking. What you may not realize is that universities have become corrupted and failed in their mission because now they ONLY propagate one ideology. Universities are supposed to be about truth and helping kids find what they believe. You can't actually do this if you are only presented with one viewpoint. This is what the modern universities do. Why this happened has to do with the philosophies that started with rise of industrialism. At the time, these were new and exciting and captured the imagination of many young faculty, who later became the majority. The dangerous part of these philosophies is that they broach no dissent. You are with or against. Think about what went down in Russia in the first part of the 20th century. It happened in our universities, here.
Many of you probably think that there is no sound and deep conservative thought. You may be shocked to learn that there is plenty of great conservative thought that challenges many of your assumptions. Sadly, you have never been exposed to them. Think about college. You can probably fondly think remember a course with a dynamic professor who spoke of intriguing ideas about privilege and economic redistribution. Your other professors probably reinforced his points. Now, can you speak about the class where the counter points were given and argued just as passionately? Do you really think no such arguments exist? Did you ever really seek them out? Do you understand that the absence of this discussion is the anathema of true intellectual thought?

In a few posts, there seems to be some confusion about the use of java in medical imaging. What the above poster is likely talking about is a program released by the NIH called ImageJ.

It is a wonderful application that is useful for image processing and even microscopy. There is a user community that has made many add-ons to increase functionality. It is written in java because macs are thing in the medical research world, and it was easier to support one java version than separate mac and PC things.
That said, it was a little disingenuous to include that in this discussion about web programming. ImageJ is not used as web plugin, but more as an on local machine program. I think his point was, if you wish away all of java, you will wish away some things people use. The thread is about wishing away java for HTML purposes.

This is what I said in the original post. However, the price was artificially surged to $100+. This allowed alternative energies to be made viable.
The Cartel is by no means broken, and as the supply price is driven down and competing tech is made enviable, you will see the price rise again.

Suddenly, one could talk about expensive option like Solar with a straight face as a real cost effective alternative.
Along with new economic viability of renewable energy sources , the oil recovery technique which is known as fracking became feasible. The oil reserves found in the Middle East are simply easy to get at, so the cost per barrel is lower. However, there are actually greater oil reserves found in Canada and the U.S. trapped in rock. Normally, this oil was considered to be untouchable, since it was so much harder to get out of the ground compared to the Mid East Oil. But at an inflated $100?B cost, these North American reserves become viable
The rate that fracking technology was implemented and improved stunned the OPEC nations. In the typical sleeping giant fashion of the U.S., once it awoke, it started solving technical problems very quickly. Not only was the U.S. suddenly able to counter the ridiculously artificially high oil costs, it was in danger of being able to be competitive in oil production cost in general. Since the North American reserves are actually greater than those of Middle East, this would mean they could no longer dictate world policy.
To combat the situation, the OPEC nations flooded the market with oil. They committed economic warfare by selling oil at below cost, just to shut down the Fracking threat. This time, fracking will not quickly come online to counter it.

Under the current below market oil prices, renewable won't really be able to compete either. How long do you think these companies can sell at a loss before they have to give in?

btw, what most people think was the "Russian" hacking was really a pissed off Burney Sanders supporter, who learned the DNC was falsifying the election to make a promising candidate in their own party lose. Since this is embarrassing and could start a mob level revolt leading to a new party, or worse, reform, they made up a scapegoat story to distract the weak minded and gullible from taking action against the truly corrupt people in this story.

In 2007, the OPEC countries decided that the price of oil was too low (remember, gas was a dollar something at that point) and colluded to raise the cost of oil. Within the span of a year, the price doubled. This caused the recession that the we all have been enjoying for the last decade or so.
As the price per gallon reached an absurd $4/gallon, this spurred a great deal of innovation in the energy sector, since engineering solutions that were not feasible at $50/barrel suddenly become feasible at close to $100 barrel. Suddenly, one could talk about expensive option like Solar with a straight face as a real cost effective alternative.
Along with new economic viability of renewable energy sources , the oil recovery technique which is known as fracking became feasible. The oil reserves found in the Middle East are simply easy to get at, so the cost per barrel is lower. However, there are actually greater oil reserves found in Canada and the U.S. trapped in rock. Normally, this oil was considered to be untouchable, since it was so much harder to get out of the ground compared to the Mid East Oil. The rate that fracking technology was implemented and improved stunned the OPEC nations. btw, what most people think was the "Russian" hacking was really a pissed off Burney Sanders supporter, who learned the DNC was falsifying the election to make a promising candidate in their own party lose. Since this is embarrassing and could start a mob level revolt leading to a new party, or worse, reform, they made up a scapegoat story to distract the weak minded and gullible from taking action against the truly corrupt people in this story.
