I didn't say that. I said "Seems to enjoy". Music and films are all based on trends. The trends are followed to make the maximum money. It was just a coincidence that there's about 20girl bands all being formed at the same time. It was just a coincidence that last summer (UK) nearly every movie was a teen highschool romantic comedy (She's al that, 10TIHAY, Never been kissed, American Pie, Election)
I also never implied it would continue along the same lines, everyone gets bored, the trends change, the movie/music moguls follow where they are lead.
And most people do buy into the hype. QV: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, The Spice Girls, and many many more.
Whatever happened to the film of Microserfs by D. Coupland? I remember hearing about it, and thinking, "Great book, but it didn't really have an action packed movie storyline"
But then again, neither did the story of Nick Leeson and it was made into a film.
Pander to what the public wants. If the public seems to enjoy one prequel released 22 years after the original, then they want every movie to have a prequel released 22years afterwards. If they like "scary" movies that have no visible scary entity, they want all movies to have no visible scary entity. If we liked one girl band, then we'll love it when there's 1000 of them
I don't really know why maybe it's my sadistic streak but I feel if people do get burned the linux hype will cease Which can only be a good thing surely.
I got an email from my friend saying that Intel and AOL were merging together. Admittedly it was one of the stupid "Aol and Intel are making email tracking software" forwards, but it seems quite nicely timed with this announcement.
I understood the "Christian" aspect. I just thought that it made the entire thing cheesy.
Jesus was able to bring himself back to life, he didn't require some bints love and a kiss.
Their astounding metaphor sucked quite frankly. Had Neo died, it would have meant that the matrix had won, and was still tricking us, and that we were still no nearer salvation than before, and WE would have to do something about it. Having a person who was on his way to save us, just played to everyone's laziness - "Ah why bother, we've got a guy who's already doing it"
I understood that. I just thought it would have been better had he died, as it would have been that the matrix had won, that maybe the matrix was real, and still had the power over us, and lots of other better things like that.
a parody that is funny without being just rude words put in everywhere (qv Dilbert hell)
I liked this much more than the real thing (which was watchable, until the "coming back to life" thing they had - Anyone else think the film would have been better if he had just died? Would have had a whole new subtle meaning, but wouldn't have been as ratings friendly)
Why thank you:) It just annoys me that sites are trying to be jack of all trades, when really they should just be concentrating on the one thing they can do well.
What is deja trying to be? I mean, I know it's a way to search usenet but looking at it's front page tells you nothing. They're trying to pass off as a new portal and hide their main asset which no other portal anywhere has. I mean, does it look like the search box will do anything useful like search every usenet post? No, it looks like it does piss all.
I was just amazed at how badly the BBC did anything. 29.5hrs of continual Millennium coverage (uninterrupted for anything execpt Eastenders - have to keep those ratings up). Who really wanted to watch it all? At least ITV didn't do their usual copycat trick by mirroring everything auntie does.
And had you moderated it down I would have moderated it back up. why? Because it's a very good point.
If all the ICQ clone writers, or all the email client writers were to get together just think what a great ICQ clone, or emailer we'd have. When Helixcode was starting to write Evolution, they asked the current GNOME email client writers if they wanted to help, so that Evolution could have everything, that everyone wanted. Admitedly there's always going to be someone who wants something more, but in programs where there's not much room for flexibilty (ICQ clones, email clients, news readers) I think it's a good point.
I always think "Bloody hell, *ANOTHER* ICQ/IM/Yahoo pager...etc clone, do we really need one more?" when I see a new one announced on Freshmeat.
nothing is wrong with making money but it's another thing to have principles and stick to those principles when they're tested.
And why was my original comment moderated down? I makred it off topic myself, it doesn't need some wanker with moderation points to go "Hey this here's off topic" Third time in a week this has happened. I get asked a question, the answer doesn't pertain to the discussion, and so it gets moderated down. Sorry, rant over
2 highly principled people (within weeks), with the will power to actually stick to their principles when HUGE wads of cash are dangled in front of their noses. My belief in humanity is slowly coming back
ICQ has > 55,000,000 people using it AOL has about the same Yahoo had 20,000,000 I think the last time I heard
How many more people can want to keep in touch with people? Or is it going to be a case where we need once client to talk to Dave, and one for Sally and Fred (being the guy who has to have the newest software) we need a 3rd.
Well the do talk about it having a Safe Mode and we all know what OS has a Safe Mode. At least the probe seems to be able to do things while in its safe mode, as opposed to Windows Safe Mode.
Is there anywhere that you can find out about what companies are being naughty (like etoys, hasbro, amazon etc...) and why they are on the site, and why we should boycott them, or write them nasty letters telling them off?

> How good is Linux at (Remote Access) RAS,
...the list goes on (note, everthing i list is >free with windows)...
Telnet?
> Componentization (COM+),
GNOME and KDE both have good versions of this.
> Telephony (TAPI),
Dunno but I remmber seeing an app advertised on freshmeat thats been around since 96 to do this.
> Speech (SAPI),
There's something for it, can't remember what.
> 3D (DirectX),
DirectX sucks.
OpenGL works fine.

Ummmm,
MySQL, Oracle
.....

Fairly good
> Transaction Servers (MTS),
No idea.

Haven't a clue

Now you're just being silly.
I've forgotten what it's called...
Oh yeah apache
> ASP,
php
> ActiveX,
Com+ in a fancy name.
> PnP..etc
2.3 supports my pnp cards without any hassle.
In fact I've had more luck with pnp stuff
under linux, than under windows.

Free to obtain,
how much does it cost to have more than 10people using it at once?

It's all about money, and trends.
Unfortunatly.
I love the one that takes the fancy themes and makes xmms use them, but it's not really a plugin (unless it's changed since I used it).
Nice idea though.

Creative aren't going to like that too much really.
but they got it wrong, but even linux.com has got it wrong, so we'll not hold it against them.
"- Experience with various window managers (Gnome, KDE, etc.)"
At least this looks like they want to integrate whatever programs they make into the various Desktop Environments, which has to be a good thing.
> I think Creative should customize GLP'ed audio
> apps with a Creative logo
They wouldn't like to just do that, because then its easy to remove the logo with a few swift CTRL-K's

That Novell guy will have to be careful :)
Yes, and they'd say, "See all those nasty hackers, they're bad they are", and EToys.com would become the victim.
So no, this was a bad idea.
Is there anywhere that you can find out about what companies are being naughty (like etoys, hasbro, amazon etc...) and why they are on the site, and why we should boycott them, or write them nasty letters telling them off?
If not, I think there should be.
