    The Apple article was helpful and all but there are guys who have been working on the XFree86 port for a long time, like since 2002 or something, so if you need a place to get answers to running X apps on OSX, keep an eye on www.xdarwin.org/forum

    Siemens makes some that are really slim and you can fit two of them in adjacent cardbus slots. If you're really interested, email me directly and I'll look up the model number for you. The Siemens wifi card (802.11b, not .11g) works by default with Knoppix too.

    I'm getting such a kick out of this thread. With the exception of drives (always buy those new from whoever pricewatch recommends that day), I basically get all my stuff from bottom-feeding off of eBay. So basically, the rest of you suckers are covering my hardware depreciation for me. Hey, thanks guys. And before you give me shit about what's server class and what's low end, know that I've saturated T3's with performance-tuned celerons funning *bsd. Last year's hardware on OpenBSD trumps next year's hardware on Microsloth. Like they said in Austin Powers, it ain't the size, mate, it's how you USE it!

    I've given more than one open source content management solution a spin and IMHO, LogiCreate does a better job than most at form-content separation. I think their business model is to give away most parts but then charge for the web-store component, but go check it our for yourself: www.logicreate.com

    A fair number of those issues have been resolved with MacGIMP. You might give that a try. I know it puts the proper icon in the dock, and you install it via drag and drop etc., so it is a much more mac-like install.

    Hey thanks for the advice! Just gave it a shot, waiting for the compile to finish.

    Get the same result for both pango 1.4.0 and 1.6.0. When you say that dependent libs need the same CFLAGS, would this mean I should recompile xft2 and glib then with the flags you mention?

    Curious what -fPIC does.

    Doubtless, slashdot isn't the optimal forum for this discussion, do you know of a GNOME-OSX mailing list anywhere by any chance?

    I just spent the past day rebuilding fontconfig, libiconv, libintl, etc. to get pango to build on Mac OS X. This is painful. darwinports and fink are both helpful but not enough. Still don't have it building. Any slashdot gnome wizards want to take a whack at this one?

    Get an older PC, often sold at computer fairs for $50 or less. I'm thinking a 400-600mghz range PC from Dell or Gateway or HP. Then boot it into the vanilla FireFox liveCD, see livecd.net. That makes a kiosk-like web-browsing and email system that is pretty much impossible to break.

    Seriously. The best way to combat this problem is to actually get a law degree and/or get elected and do something about it. There is way way too much of this cr*p going on. This isn't the prettiest part of capitalism, it's the ugliest part of socialism and needs to get cleaned up by people who are more interested in doing the right thing than their paycheck at the end of the quarter.

    Multiple undo is a feature that has been available for about three years in the GIMP. You can even customize how many steps it will let you undo, as this is rather RAM sensitive. Some plugins won't let you undo, and the workaround there is to just revert to the last saved version.

    Actually, it's a nice way for the attorneys to suck all of the money out of the situation. Threaten to sue: get paid. File lawsuit: get paid. Go to trial: get paid. Apparently for attorneys, the motivations for all of these things are different than the interests of the stockholders of the publicly held company in question. I considered investing in NOVL, since they had the smarts to buy out Ximian and SuSE, but not after this legal crap. I mean, they're positioning themselves to be the desktop Linux company, but then wasting time with these lawsuits? Blah!

    Not everybody "gets" technology. I'd even make the claim that you don't have to "get" technology to be a good or even a great leader. Leadership is something orthogonal to technology. Dick Cheney's flub about factcheck.com versus the correct factcheck.org is a good example. Sure, it would have been nice for him to get it right, but it was a reasonable mistake, and made me realize how brittle this whole web system is for getting out information to people.

    As far as vietnam veteran's rights go, you owe it to youself to find out what happened in 1971 when Kerry came back and started spewing falsehoods about his fellow soldiers. Seriously, when his own compatriats are calling what he did treason, you have to stop and think about it.

    Seriously, if you listen to what the Vietnam Veterans have had to say about Kerry's actions in 1971, it's pretty powerful stuff. No need for a video game, just go ask the old guy in your neighborhood who came back from the war and had his uniform spit on. There's a film that gives some interesting details and background information.

    Cancelling the registrations is the hard part, as it means that an individual would have to be able to log back in. This means that the ticket-holder needs to have some password or other unique method for doing so. Perhaps consider handling this with a special cancellation link with a per-user hash that gets emailed to each ticket holder along with their confirmation. This requires email integration, not impossible obviously, but something that you'll want to give architectural consideration. If you come up with a detailed specification for your project submit it with your contact information to contact.phpconsulting.com, and I'll quote you on it.
