I do agree on your "title" but strongly disagree when you say motorola's Processor are lame. they aren't whats make them look lame is what geos with hem (ie Mac Machines, with crappy macos and crappy-buggy Intel chipsets on the MB). Other bad thing for the Power PC has a general use chip is that it is too strongly thight to IBM and Apple (remmember the wars Apple/ibm in the 80's). The chip itself IS great.....
Have you ever tried to do asm on an Intel Chip and on a Motorola one ? intel sux , you are restricted on the use of the registers, their number is limited.
The future of the mainstream PC is tied to the x86 architecture which imho has reached is limits. And changing to IA 64 is going to be painfull so Intel seeks people with experience in that Field Mot's employees. ALso ALtivec to be released with the G4's chip rocks a lot more than MMX or Katmai so Intel wants to get that technology to say Hey look what we've done.....
Will it be a hardware/software splitt ? or more processor / other split ? Is it related to IA64 ? (Hp machines are great I mean both HPPA and Intel powered, I hope the hardware will continue to stay that cool). Now if HP ux could become more SMP friendly this really would be great (I think the OS is mostly responsible for SMP features, not Applications).
The closing Gap is a nice Idea but is only worth when the country has computers. So Globally what is says is true for "middle" developed country, but for "real" third world countries It's false.
One other good thing about this article is : not a word is said about KDE : no flames wars !! Even though I consider Plurality a needed value for Open software. KDE vs GNOME wars is for me the same kind of techy battle that pushes the products higher and let the Final users (you and Me) choose.
I hope this will Help the compiler In a General manner and that other architectures will also get boost from this work ( but I doubt:-( ).
Now I would like To see Motorola doe the Same so that LinuxPPC would get faster (and so would all the BeOS gcc stuffs).
Arm could help too. As should all Risc vendors. Remember one off the concept of the Risc architecture is : let the compiler do the work, not the processor -- (Since P's are suppose to be CISCs I think other architectures would get Better boost on that kind of work then the x86 arch).
From My non US point Of view I think the trial on bill gate is much more interresting. I france we never you'd have get on trail for what your president made. I even think many of us you'd have say it was ok.
The problem in the US is that people lack some kind of lessons on politics in school. Something Which is really well provided here in france. For US what matters is what the president does for the country not who he plays with....:)
What happens. It can be a good thing from my point of view. I just Hope, mister jobs won't be CEO anymore because I Want to see BeOS running on a Dual G4 altivec powered machine. BeOS is suppose to be The media OS , G4 is the media chip. so lets hope DIsney will help Be --
When/. upgraded their coonection in july or august (can't remember) and when the DNS services where so SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW on upgrading the info - I always had to use the IP for the first 4 dyas
(and it is not because Apple doesn't want to give the specs, Be doesn't or can't (something like 20% of be is owned by Intel))
has for other PPC makers/builders Pios has a promise of be saying they will port BeOS to the Pios one - Pios hasn't finished theuir proto and are making web tv stuff to make money -
there only one two other PPC builders : IBM (why wuold they ask be ?? they didn't finish the OS/2 port) and an IBM clone maker selling Linux or AIX (you choose).
Now if you want to make/build PPC machines, go for it, ask make a deal with Be (and if they don't then switch to linux).
This reminds me the early days of Be Inc, the BeOS and the bebox (when the only supported Hardware was the bebox : les beaux jours chez Be, nostalgie, nostalgie quand tu nous tiens). They said they would endebed an ID on each machine so that dev could sell licenses depending on those IDs - great, but then they started supporting the mac and the idea was thrown in the garbage.
NOw ok if intel goes for it but then you'll just have to switch to other chip maker like AMD - software dev could'nt rely on that kind of argument because ALL chips would not support such feature.
If you don't want such feature in a proc then mail intel saying you'll go see elsewhere if the don't stop now.....
My Web page is hosted by a free web space provider.
It started has a student project and bandwith was supplied by the Uni - then the Uni said no more so it went with a commercila provider with a large announce.
Then Sun gave a machine and users gave disk and other hardware to support the site. It was not enough so the guy running the machine (which give free space for 30000 users) had a great idea.If you wanted stats for your web then you had to add a cgi script that would show a ad banner
So you should:
Try to find free bandwith for the beginning
Then find advertisers
To get monthly revenues build up a barnes and nobles or amazon library (then the only thing you'll need is traffic )

On what kind of Hardware does this port runs On ?
Is there a gcc that knows anything on the Coldfire ? or is it just raw 68k emulation provided by the Coldfire ?

The article says Debian is a compagny .....
Since when ?

Hard drive will diseapera and be replaced by static memory with 10 ns access time !
Will they "downgrade" the price of their workstation ? (I mean the Mips powered Ones).
....
Will they help de optimisation of the "Free" compiler tools - like egcs and gcc ?
Will this support help the Mesa to get OpenGL certification ?
These are the real Linux-related Q
When /. upgraded their coonection in july or august (can't remember) and when the DNS services where so SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW on upgrading the info - I always had to use the IP for the first 4 dyas
Sure - but by dead I think he meant no new feature
And since you have the source code every one can patch it and maintaint the version they are using.
Not on apple machines ;(

There's a book enterely on the subject :
Beos : Porting Unix Applications
ISBN: 1558605320
voila
BeOS runs ontop of it's own micro-kernel;
BeOS is 95% POSIX compliant -
At the socket level it somewhat BSD like (but lacks some BSD features).
The French Post office is studying wheter or not it will give every French Citizen an E-mail
Then it will forward the mail via snail.
I NEVER had any license from microsoft !!!!
(made my intel box myself -
my bebox isn't M$ realted -
maybe some stuff in my atari falcon might be m$
related)
