I'd say with a PE (like BartPE) and some tools it's possible to remove malware that are hiding themselves with rootkit techniques. Booting from read only media is the classic way of preventing execution of hostile code, but sadly it's often overlooked nowadays. It can be very time consuming though to locate and remove malware though, especially when you don't know it's there. It's not something an average user would likely succeed in doing, so I guess you're mostly right when you say it's impossible to remove without fdisk/format.
What rubbish! If you want to be a "pirate" (and let's call it something else, please), you can copy a DVD any time you want. Just do a bit-by-bit copy, and voila! A copied DVD. These manufacturers do not enable theft in any way.
I you're talking about copying to a DVD-R, a bit-by-bit copy would produce an unplayable DVD. The CSS key is pre-recorded and thus the copy can't be decrypted.
I bought FOT after playing the demo, 'cause I really liked the gameplay since you could play it in turn based mode. On the other hand I regretted having paid for it since it was so buggy and Interplay did a real crappy job supporting it and getting patches out, probably because they had massive financial problems at the time.
Grey Matter Studios, previously known as Xatrix Entertainment? If so then I must say that RtCW is a lot more interesting than their earlier releases which include Kingpin: Life of Crime, Quake II: The Reckoning and Redneck Rampage.
Hard to pirate? It seems that all you have to do is download, burn and install, because from what I have seen on some boards a lot of clueless gamer kids are running XP.
Did anyone here have a four-digit ID? Or maybe even three- or two-digit? I had one under 5000, which I was very proud of when there were millions of users. It's sad, I know. --

Jump through hoops? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there were already several functioning IRC-nets before Talk City came along. So who cares if Talk City goes bad, just switch to another net!
I admit that I hadn't heard of Talk City before today, so I may be missing something important here. -- "But I'm still like a little kid, see? I just don't know when to quit." - Rei
Yeah, and it was really boring too. When I had played through about half of this game I noticed that my save games were corrupt. I removed it from my HD and I haven't given any Ultima game half a glance since that. -- "But I'm still like a little kid, see? I just don't know when to quit." - Rei
I don't think it's possible to add so much more value to an album than the audio itself. There are already mixed mode CDs with both an album and some bonus stuff to use in your computer, but I don't think those who pirate those CDs miss the computer stuff much. Personally I don't care much for the pictures/videos/stuff that are on some CDs. It's fun to play with for ten minutes, then you just forget about it and listen to the album.
Yes, copying a DVD right now probably means that you have to strip data off to be able to fit it on a couple of CDs, but it will no doubt be possible to make digital, perfect copies of whole DVDs at some point in the future.

I know for sure that this method to circumvent the Y2K problem has been used and taught in schools over and over for many years now, so how can this be patented?
Sometimes when I read the artciles on Slashdot I feel like I'm reading Segfault instead. This was one of those.
All of my Linux boxen has been named after filovirii, hanta, dengue and ebola (which in their turn are named after the places where they first were spotted).
If I'd have more hosts to name I probably would go for names from the Final Fantasy series such as cactros, sabotander and quistis. There are lots of cool names to choose from there.
Personally I'd hate to use cute names like bugsbunny and goofy.
The SoundBlaster Live! has a daughter card with SPDIF ports (and an internal CD-SPDIF port). I'm really satisfied with this card, but I dunno how this will work under Linux.

Seriously, does someone have an invite to spare? I'd be very grateful for it, since it seems none of my friends have signed up for Gmail.
Yes. ;-)

On the V-Rock CD in the soundtrack box set you can hear when Lazlow gets thrown off the station.
Well yes, it does. I'm tired of the old arab bad, USA good stereotypes and I'd like to play games with more imaginative stories.
This album sounds just like the previous one, so I would say that the problem isn't tech savvy fans, only that they recognize a rip-off.
It's write only, not write once, so it can be rewritten.

But the Y2K problem will mostly affect systems with stored dates, and I don't think re-entering data is an option.
