And if Congress would discontinue its assault on them. They are practically the only entity in the country - government or corpoate - required to fully fund their pension liabilities. Not surprisingly, that is bringing them to their knees financially. On the one hand, they receive no taxpayer subsidies and are expected to be self-supporting, the way private companies are (supposedly). On the other hand, Congress micromanages them in ways that no private company has to tolerate. No, you can't close that post office. ..it's in my district. No, you can't discontinue Saturday service. ..what will Great-Aunt Maude do? I love Great-Aunt Maude, but still. . .
Look at the positive side. ..The new-fangled words force you to use some new/different brain cells. ..helps to keep you sharp as you get old. ..and yes you are getting old. We all are.
Uh, I should have been more specific. ..SEARCHING for oil and gas doesn't make things worse, and the article is talking primarily about the SEARCH. Of COURSE, actually extracting the oil/gas would make a significant environmental difference. But depending on where the oil is found, regulatory pressures may keep them from ever actually extracting it. There are already known oil and gas reserves that are a long ways from being extracted due to regulatory restrictions.
I don't think all jobs of the future will require programming ability. For most people, programmimg is simply a means to an end. Programmimg provides tools that enable people to do their jobs - now and in the future. So, will almost jobs be dependent, directly or indirectly, on some programming? Yes, probably. Will all jobs require programming? Noooooo.
In the U.S., unfortunately, there are plenty of high schools that do the same - teach MS Office in "technology" classes. And even that were considered earth-shattering (which it obviously isn't). ..in some school systems, the kids have "technology" classes from elementary through high school. And what do they learn how to do in lower elementary school (when some of them still can't read)? Change text fonts. And what do they learn how to do in high school?? CHANGE TEXT FONTS!!
Yeah, I thought about Hawaii. I don't think they'll ever figure into the calculation, given the small number of representatives from Hawaii. And I think the only reason PT would even be brought up - though it would be dropped - would be because of California. I'm thinking of numbers of representatives involved.
A lot of saved travel dollars would be shifted into the budget for videoconferencing equipment. But it would a good way for some of the more rural areas to get the technology infrastructure they currently lack.
I think a telecommuting Congress would be great, but what does "appropriately" mean? Central Time, Mountain time? I don't think we'd ever get to Pacific time.
I don't think it's a matter of hurt feelings, but a matter of the insurance company lowering the boom if you lose a patient. When my kids were young, the ped practice made a notation in their files that I was willing to be told that I had to let things run their course and would not demand antibiotics. Conversely, my sister's (now ex-) husband caused them to note in HER kids files that dad would antibiotics no matter what.
When my kids were little, one of the doctors in the ped practice confided that they had noted in my kids' files that "mom is OK with being told that this is something that needs to run its course." He told me they were glad I didn't "demand" antibiotics. I feel ya.
Government doesn't have the manpower because legislators think 1 of 3 things:
1)should it be done? no; starve the budget
2)should it be done? no, but if it's going to be done, someone should make huge profits so let's privatize it.
3)should it be done? I don't know/care, but if it's going to be done, someone should make huge profits so let's privatize it.
4)should it be done? yes, and someone should make huge profits so let's privatize it.
Plus, how many private sector employees expect privacy, anyway? Yes, I know the "slippery slope" argument, but I know that my emails and websurfing are being monitored at work anyway - by INTERNAL security. The fact that DHS is stepping in is not a huge deal. Monitoring me at home? Problem. At work? I don't care. It's my employer's equipment, infrastructure, etc.
And for all of those manly men who are afraid to return to PyCon, please note that as a result of this whole pathetic situation, the Code of Conduct now includes the following as one of the prohibited behavios that can result in expulsion from the conference: "harassing photography or recording". You no longer need to fear the "feminazis" at Pycon.
I think a lot of women agreed that she over-reacted. Some women thought she shouldn't have "re"acted at all. But some of those women who were on the fence now find themselves falling off the fence onto her side. Not because she was fired, but because of all the rage directed towards her.
I don't agree with a lot that is done in the name of feminism. But without feminism and men who either agreed with or were forced to comply with at least some of the tenets of feminism, it would still be considered perfectly acceptable to grope women at will, demand sex, demand that women attend strip clubs as part of doing business, etc. Is that behavior prevalent now? No. Was it prevalent in the past? Much more than it should have been.
The issue is not that it's that effen hard - it's not. And larger retailers are already doing this. My zip code crosses 2 jurisdictions and a couple of the large retailers always ask me whether I live in jurisdiction A or B. We don't pay local sales taxes here, but obviously these large retailers are already collecting it in states that do.
The issue for smaller retailers is cost.

Since D'Aloisio, at least, lives in London, will he have to move to California to work for Yahoo once the deal closes?

Agreed. It will just be tougher on small businesses.

Those searching for oil are rarely in the same camp as those looking to conserve it.
I don't think it makes things worse. It just doesn't do anything - at least in the short-tem - to solve the problem.

Excellent points, all. And force the lobbyists to be the telecommuters.

Nah. . .I'm sure he's leaving to spend more time with his family.
I don't think people will "get it" until and unless the pendulum starts swinging the other way and they see the impact in their personal lives.
Agreed. They would probably have to buy a package/service, which would probably be prohibitively expensive for them.

Allies have always spied on each other - we do it, too.
