  1. Hell yeah, I want better on Still More on Open Source Usability · · Score: 4, Insightful
If you think that graphic designers are the answer to the problem, you are seriously missing the user experience clue train... At a *minimum* there needs to be roles dedicated to:
    1. user research
    2. interaction design
    3. interface design and rapid prototyping
    4. Content-based products like a website or CMS should add information architecture.
    5. usability evaluation
Note that on a small team, one person might combine a couple of said roles.

Here's a diagram that shows an incomplete sampling of user experience disciplines.

It's a profound problem in OSS that people consider having graphic designers the answer (hence the multitude of useless eyecandy as substitute for any real UI innovation). This problem is compounded by the fact that most of the people with the skills needed to develop good strategy and requirements (the foundation of good user experience) don't have coding skills. And in a culture of "don't whine, patch it" these people are shut out from contributing, and are turned off by teams who ask for code, when they should be asking for insight (something lacking in many OSS projects).

  2. Docs should be semantically marked up anyways on CSS for the LDP? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think any CSS detractors are missing the point - docs should be marked up consistently, with H1, H2, etc. Particular semantic types (like author) could be added as styles for particular tags e.g. Adding CSS would be relatively simple on top of semantically structured docs.

Cause a keypress takes considerably less time than mouse movement, particularly if you have to switch from the keyboard to the mouse, then acquire the desired window, then click. Doubtful readers can search Google for GOMS analysis, a keystroke model for determining task times.

There are advantages to Expose, but speed isn't one of them.

So my money's on a system that only allows you to play the game for a set time, and then you have to pay again. Interesting. If the original price point was low enough, it might even be worthwhile...particularly for things like trying out games. Maybe they'll learn from those self-destructing DVDs - rights-managed content has to be really really cheap.

  8. relevance of OSS community on Photoshop in Linux Thanks to Disney · · Score: 1

    well...
Even if the OSS community is just people who contribute to OSS projects, having a workhorse like Photoshop run on Linux means that the overall Linux market expands. That means there's a greater audience for all those 1337 OSS text editors (and other more mature projects). That means that the OSS community has greater relevance to the rest of the world. And increased relevance seems to be a benefit, to me at least. Of course, some folks could prefer some sort of illusion of elite isolation instead of relevance....Mom's basement is good for that.

  12. you don't understand free markets on Cable Modem Tax Proposed by FCC · · Score: 4, Insightful

free markets don't require "everyone in every market regardless of the cost of serving that market". Free markets are free of regulatory restriction and provide whatever service the market will buy, at whatever pricepoint the market will buy it at. If the pricepoint the market is willing to pay is less than the cost to provide that service (like wired rural broadband), then a free market would suggest that said service shouldn't exist.

That said, I support rural broadband, but think that wired rural broadband will not happen in a free market for a long long time.

Or am I mistaken, and you're still as engaged as ever, and not a victim (like Frank Herbert) of publishers demanding new books with an established fan base.

"A Spell for Chameleon" was the first book I ever bought with my own money (at age 11 or so). Somehow the early 90s Xanth work didn't stack up for me.
