This isn't meant to spawn a flame thread, but your response was interesting and I would be interested to know what you think about the moving philosophy of simplifying gnome , in a less-is-more fashion. Redhat has definately done that with redhat 8.0, and I must say (after using it for 3-4 days) I -REALLY- like it.

I wish KDE would take that initive as well, though again I like what Redhat has done to 'cripple' KDE as well. (though, I find myself using gnome now exclusively).

I must disagree. I have been running XP since it was released on my home workstation. I don't have Blue Screens or System crashes. I basically use it for playing games, and occasional net-meeting video conferencing with my friends. My wife prints her recepies and I use it to play games (did I mention that? :) I just don't have all these instability problems.

I think that we are at a point where the MS instability is fud for the most part. I am not reckless, and I don't open email attachments.. Period. I don't even use Outlook* , I use Moz Mail. I do use Office for occasional documents I need to whip up for work, but nothing special and Excel for tracking my consulting hours (though, both of which I now do on my tiBook w/OfficeX).

Where is the virus and instability? It's because I don't run reckless software on my machine. I consider downloaded software like getting a whore in the bad part of town.. sooner or later your going to get a bug. I just don't touch it, hense since windows2k I haven't really had any more problems to complain about than I have had with my redhat box sitting in the corner (virtually nill).

Frankly, I don't even bother with desktop on Linux anymore as I am just tired of it. Did it for 3 so years, and just got sick of using an inferior desktop. (Which is why my Mac is now my primary desktop).

Honestly, when you look at most of the titles out ... the majority of them are supported across all 3 platforms. Not that I am XBox biaas, but I do own a PS2, GameCube and a XBox. When it comes down to choosing which platform I am going to buy a game for, first xbox, second ps2. The only Gamecube games I pickup are either for my wife or kid.

when you add the the cost of 2 or 3 games on a platform, the relative 180 you can pickup a xbox at wallmart is not that much of a difference in the long run.

I use Veegeez (http://www.veegeez.com) anyway and just rent all my games. I have 6 games out at a time for 39 dollars a month. Owning all 3 platforms, I can choose best of breed on the games I want to have in my library. I have found myself spending less money doing that over the last 6 months without having to invest in a game that I usually get bored of after 3-4 weeks of casual play.

Having purchased all the platforms and considering the cost of a years subscription to Veegeez, it's still cheeper than what i was spending a year on PC Upgrades and software + PS2 + games and with this method of having all three platforms, and subscription only games I find myself enjoying most of the new big hits as they come out for all 3 platforms.

Maybe this is a bit of a rant, but I am anxious to see microsoft and sony succeed in the field, as there has been more evolutionary movements in terms of improving the gaming experience, hopefully moving to a more interactive and online experience.

Sony has not done much but just improve graphics quality on the game console. Other than that, there isn't much difference between PS1 + PS2. Dreamcast failed hopefully where microsoft will succeed in online gaming. I personally enjoy online experiences a lot more than off-line.

    1. Unix unix unix. I am a programmer/admin for a bunch of unix boxes and 99% of my web applications etc. I am able to develop w/out any problems right on my laptop.

    2. Good Java support. Finally.

    3. Fast. I have heard complaints from other people, but my tiBook seems to run fine. It feels like it runs 2x faster than my G4 tower (466) and doesn't feel like a workstation when it's doc'd to my monitor and usb keyboard/mouse.

    4. Da chit just works. I honestly don't have to monkey around with anything. I don't install hacks and wacks to make my windows different shapped or themed. I install the updates, trival as windows update really. I have IDEA and JEdit installed and they work great. The new iChat is pretty cool, different than GAIM which I have been pretty used to until now. But, I don't feel like I have to really monkey with anything to get things working.

    5. Feeling of integration. I find myself using a lot of the same things, so not a huge deal. Mozilla & my two java apps (IDEA and JEdit) seem to sorta throw me once in a while, but for the most part .. most of the applications stick to the guidelines.

    Dislikes.

    1. Expensive. If I wasn't a moderatly well paid professional , it would of been impossible to afford it. ($3200 is a lot of money to me at least).

    2. My model gets pretty hot. Almost freaks me out to where I am going to go buy a little caddy for the laptop and a small fan to keep it cool. I worry about it ruining the screen with the lid closed while using it as a desk-side workstation. My java apps tend to run a bit hot.

    3. No Infrared.

    4. Sometimes mediocre 802.11b reception, probably due to the titanium case.

    5. Slows noticably if disk-io is sky-high. Though, my brother who has an iBook said that putting disk-intensive apps on a fire-wire drive run fantastic. Probably the small form-factor of a laptop hard disk. I remember having the same issue with my Sony Viao.

Overall I would say that is the best laptop I have ever purchased and I don't regret buying it. I figure even if Apple tanks 4 years from now, I will get my 2 year life cycle out of the unit with another 2 years on top of that for my wife or kids to use.

It's the first laptop I have ever owned that I find myself using as my primary workstation for development.
