I think trickle down has always been premised on the idea that rich people and CEO's would voluntarily do the right thing with their money and increased profits. It's premised on the idea that a CEO would act in the best interests of the company and invest his profits the company's long-term future--not just go for the quick short-term profit, use it to pay himself a big bonus, and then bail with his golden parachute when the long-term problems hit. It's premised on the idea that a rich individual is going to share his wealth (hiring more servants, buying more stuff, and spreading it around)--not just horde his money and be a cheapskate fuck to the illegal immigrants he hires on the cheap to do all the work around his mansion.

In other words, the premise that trickle-down is based on is complete bullshit, as has been evidenced by over three decades now in the U.S. of watching money NOT trickling down for shit.

No, I'm just practical and have some understanding of basic human behavior. People will only go so far out of their way before they say "Fuck this." Give them a practical option and make it easier on them to do they right thing, and they'll do the right thing. Then we all win. Make doing the right thing a huge pain in the ass, and they'll just say "fuck this." Then none of us win.

Giving away more durable bags (or a 5 cent surcharge) will just lead to a new type of bag in the landfills.

That's why you make recycling EASY. Drop your plastic bags off at ANY store, get your 5 cents a bag. Even if you're too lazy and just throw them away, you can bet some homeless person or trash hauling company is going to pull it out before it goes to the landfill and collect the money.

If you want to take your chances with bacteria, salmonella, etc.--go for it.

    2) You don't have to remember to bring them to the store so long as you have the presence of mind to know that you're going to the store, or to keep one in a handy place for unexpected runs.

In other words, you don't have to remember to bring them to the store, just as long as you remember to bring them to the store.

Yes, except I'm not going to use a bunch of fabric bags that have to buy myself, remember to bring to the store, and that have to be washed after every visit to the store. A much better and more practical idea would be a modest surcharge (5 cents/bag or whatever) which you then get back when you turn them in for recycling (which would be required in every store, not just at recycling centers). We already do this with plastic bottles in several states in the U.S. and, the way I see it, everybody wins.

If Johnny Bible-thumper wants to live like than because he thinks Jesus wants him to, then that's his choice. But it's not mine. And it shouldn't be forced on me just because a bunch of senators need Johnny Bible-thumper's support to get re-elected.

The best review I ever heard of EvE Online was from a guy who said that he wasn't going to pay $15 a month to be chased down and killed by some teenager with daddy issues in the Battlestar Galactica. Pretty much summed it up for me.

When I tried it out, it seemed like their were basically two modes to the game: either incredible boredom in safe space or getting constantly jumped and butt-raped in unsafe space. I guess there was some appeal in trading (kind of a much less satisfying version of the old trading routes in Elite), but it seemed like all the good routes were owned by the corporations and all that was left for the little guys were the scraps. In the end, it's even less rewarding than mining.

In short, EvE Online reminds me way too much of real life. And that's what I play videogames to avoid.
