Xbox One Released
Microsoft released the Xbox One today, putting the next-gen console war into full swing. A common theme throughout most of the reviews is that properly evaluating the system is going to take time. Not only are updates for the console continuing to roll out, but the usefulness of some of its technology will depend on what game-makers and other content producers can do with it. Digital Foundry says, "It is willing to make the trades on gaming power in order to potentially revolutionize the way we interact with entertainment in the living room." The Penny Arcade Report calls the hardware and UI a "confusing mess" — until you learn to use it, at which point the hands-free navigation is fast and convenient. Polygon's review is once again visually-oriented, providing a good look at the UI, comparing the controller with the Xbox 360's controller, and giving a demonstration of how Kinect recognizes users. Their conclusion is that while "Kinect isn't a fully realized product yet," "the Xbox One feels like it's from the future." iFixit has a full teardown of the Xbox One, giving it a repairability score of 8/10 (the Kinect sensor gets 6/10). HotHardware has more details about the console's internals, including power consumption and temperature readings. Eurogamer has a compilation of launch coverage, including launch title reviews.
Well, I hope this means good things for AMD.
The PS4 and XBone shouls really provide a nice steady revenue stream.
Be interesting once they've been out for a bit to get better details on the CPU.

Your Shields have been recharged. (This may not make sense to you know. Try to find the secret on Polygon's review)
With all of the invasions of privacy by all the console makers, we should neither support or encourage these companies by purchasing these products. Once we have realized that video games are simply a mechanism of the ruling class to track and control the masses, the better we will be.

"depend on what game-makers and other content producers can do with it"
Similar to the ps3 reviews. So basically there is no reason to buy it until someone releases some actual good games? That is similar to the last generation for the few months after launch. I was playing old titles on my next gen console for the first year. I personally plan to wait, play some steam games and finish last gen games, and get the console midway into next year when something I want comes out.
This so much. Both the PS4 and Xbox One are a trip back to the crusty 80s video tape recorder. The aesthetic design of the previous console generation was much more elegant in my opinion.
I don't know about you, but I care more about how a console plays than how it looks. If you care about that kind of thing, you put it in a cupboard. It's not like you need line of sight from the controller to the main unit.
I don't want it in my living room anyway, for other reasons.
which is totally what she said
Funny that Penny Arcade calls the UI as confusing mess, while the Ars review actually praises the Xbox's implementation, especially when compared to the PS4's UI.
But then, all reviews are broadly subjective.
So I should be able to pick up a used Xbox and PS3 for cheap sometime after Christmas. Why spend $500 when I can spend $100 on a console that's been thoroughly hacked?
Give me Classic Slashdot or give me death!
Thats one good reason to prevent Anonymous Coward to post.. Then again people who are registered wont be prevented from spamming this crap
Great googly moogly, for that price you buy a decent laptop and get real work done instead of being a filthy console peasant.
No wonder they're peasants if they make poor spending decisions like that.
When the Wii U came out, everyone declared it was crap and that Nintendo was doomed. But when XBOX One and PS4 come out people say to wait and see? Really? Excuse me while I go play "Super Mario 3D World" on my console that actually has games.
Conversely, I hate the way the previous generation was built, and the PS4 and One look much better, IMO.
For large sets, this will be our guide even unto death, for the LORD will work for each type of data it is applied to...
I liked the old MS UI work.
They pushed for the Common user interface stuff back in the DOS days, and it was great.
Now they're trying to merge desktop, tablet, phone & TV/Xbox into a consistent theme of UI. It's hard but they're pushing hard.
They're getting a lot of pushback, but I think that's inherent in what they are doing, Gnome 3 is getting the same thing.
Apple however does the same thing, but they've conditioned their customer base to accept the Apple way.
Personally, Google glass integration would be an awesome feature in either next gen console. I wonder if this is in the pipeline for either...
Why can't we have both? The company allegedly spent $100 million on getting the controllers to feel right. Couldn't they have spend a little on the aesthetics of the device as well?
Yes. Damn the americals.

Oh, I dunno... on the right thread, it's better than some of the political rants I've seen... although I do tire of the whole 'stupid lib/evil con' narrative.
Anyway, it's OT, so mod it as such and go on about your day.

Right, and the Tea Party in no way wants to force their agenda on society.
Oh, but wait, that's different, right? Because it's capitalism instead of socialism?
Such intellectual dishonesty and double standards is why we end up with two groups of idiots telling loudly they're 100% right and the other is 100% wrong -- when in practice, they're both full of shit.

How about the Slashdot geniuses throw up a thread once in a while about the dishonest Democrats forcing us all into socialized medicine by means of trickery, lies, bribery and coercion?
There were plenty of Obama supportive threads posted here going into the election.
But now that the Democrats are fully entrenched and using their power to shut down all debate and force their programs onto the american people, bankrupting us and ruining our healthcare system in the process, we see ... crickets.
How about you people engage in some actual honest debate, allow those who do not buy into the hive mind to have and express their opinion? Of course we know why, because the extremest Democrats and socialists cannot win in such a debate.
So shutdown opposition and change the rules to suit the socialists is the name of the game.
Thank you for that! Things which are a matter of taste make the perfect flame war. ;)
I haven't seen one, but I think the PS4 may look better in real life. Those odd angles make it look fatter in photos. It is quite smalland slimmmer than the XBox 360, at least
The TP does want to force freedom upon the american people, yes this is true.
We support follwowing the constitution equally - actual rules that must be adhered to by all parties.
And if a change is needed to the constitution that is also allowed, again as long as it is done fairly and according to the rules.
And socialized medicine you will note if perfectly acceptable according to the constitution, as long as it is done by a state. We have no problem with this.
Let's review;
(1) The website is broken.
(2) The payment and accounting and administration back-end is unwritten, untested, and out of time.
(3) They are seriously out of time to do something about those 3.5 to 5 million people whose insurance has been cancelled. To be covered by Jan 1, they have to get a new plan by Dec 15, which means 140,000 to 200,000 of them need to be enrolling every day between now and then, including weekends and the Thangsfrickingiving holiday, which ain't gonna happen ya'll.
(4) Adverse selection a.k.a. the death spiral a.k.a. the shit spiral is coming. See Ace's post last night on the Kentucky exchange's obvious precursor to the shit spiral.
(5) Next year we get to do this same song and dance with the group plans as the employer mandate kicks in.
(6) Lawsuits. There are some nontrivial lawsuits pending including the contraception mandate challenges and the suits based on the fact that the statute doesn't actually allow HHS to offer subsidies on the federal exchange or impose the employer mandate on states that didn't implement their own exchanges.
(7) There are still 40 million uninsured Americans according to President Obama. Which seems to me to be just a bit of a failure of the aims of Obamacare.
[8] The plans on the exchanges likely will not let people keep the provider networks of doctors, hospitals and specialists they currently use, making continuity of care impossible.
[9] Obamacare appears to be nothing more that an enormous expansion of Medicaid, the worst-performing health program in the country.
it's all St Reagan's fault for statist-ly forcing hospitals to give emergency treatment, whether they could pay for it or not.
Hmmm. I would actually buy something that had that 70's - 80's look with meters, metal switches, knobs, dip switches. Basically, the Zenith Gamespace Pro. Maybe I am too old and just miss my parent's RCA Select-a-Vision VCR I used to watch Star Wars over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...and over...
If you think that's ugly, you should meet my wife.
Thank you folks, I'll be here all week.

Either way, it will be dated in a few years anyway.
The cow says "Moo." The dog says "Woof." The Timothy says "Thanks, valued customer. We appreciate your input."
Hmm. I just had a look at it, and I'd say it looks better than the Xbox 360, and the PS4. Maybe even the PS3 slim. But again, I don't really care about the looks, so I'm going to get a PS4 (after they come down in price a bit, and resolve the Pulsing Blue Dickpunch Of Sadness). Better a nice black box, than something that looks like a toy, or is trying too hard. Most audio-visual equipment is just black boxes..
which is totally what she said
I haven't seen one, but I think the PS4 may look better in real life. Those odd angles make it look fatter in photos. It is quite smalland slimmmer than the XBox 360, at least
The camera always adds a few pounds ;-)
Must be why supermodels have to be super thin.
only to buy something you don't need?
Live life, not work.
The PS4 is smaller than the second PS3 slim. I wouldn't call that a trip back to anything. The XBox One on the other hand is as big as the original 360 and looks like a crappy HTPC case. Look at the ars technica comparison if you want to see the difference.
Otherwise, it's just 2 quad core Jaguars duct taped together.
Reminds me of a different Jaguar. 64-bit + 64-bit = 128-bit. Do the math.
Do you know who is going to win the console wars? Netflix.
Not only is it available on both, and is a big salable feature, it is now (and has been for a bit now) available on other dedicated devices.
Couple that with the fact that BOTH the release of PS4 and Xbox One will prompt a GLUT of used PS3 and Xbox360 to become available on the used market for super cheap. While they can be used for gaming still, many may be used simply as a content streamer for Netflix.
Netflix is basically run with subscriptions. If I were an inventor, I would be looking at a lot of Netflix growth over the next 2-3 years simply as a result of the console war between MS and Sony...
and you're stuck with the radio in your Mustang!
Big whoop. MP3 player or smartphone + Jupiter Jack FM transmitter = any song you want in any car with an FM radio.
They still sell CDs?
Yes. There are still several artists that have chosen not to sell their music through Amazon MP3 or Google Play Music.
I thought Ars was the "bought and paid for propaganda arm of Apple" according to some comments on here a while back. I assume Microsoft didm;t buy them as well.
Apple has no horse in the gamepad-controlled TV-displayed video game player race, unless you count an iOS 7 device (iPod touch 4 users need not apply) paired to a Bluetooth gamepad (sold separately) and connected to a TV through a wired-AirPlay cable (also sold separately) that can't even do 1080p. That leaves Microsoft.
And with roughly 80M PS3s and 80M 360s in homes, developers still have lots of incentive to target those platforms for the next few years
Provided that Sony and Microsoft continue to allow developers to develop for those platforms rather than forcing them onto the new platforms. I'll exaggerate for a moment so that we can argue inward: There are probably still tens of millions of NES consoles out there, yet Nintendo no longer licenses development of new NES games.
I don't see any exclusive game on PS4 or XBOX One.
By "exclusive", do you mean that PS4 and Xbox One games are released for the PC you already have, or just that PS4 games are also released on Xbox One and vice versa? Owning a modern console allows you to play new games in several genres that rarely end up getting ported to the PC.
Oh, now you're not even trying. Is your audience so lacking in critical thinking capacity that you think you can skate like that with the rest of us?
The Affordable Healthcare Act was passed by CONGRESS also. Say it with me, C O N G R E S S.
Has our public discourse come so dysfunctional that you can't assume logical consistency from some random troll on the internet?!!
Whether it's a good thing or bad is a matter of taste, but there's no denying the XBO look is straight out of 1987.
I am literally 3000 tokens away from the chaotic crossbow --Stephen
The Penny Arcade Report calls the hardware and UI a "confusing mess" — until you learn to use it, at which point the hands-free navigation is fast and convenient. Yeah right .... You forgot to try the voice commands in English. XBox One has the same limitation of XBox 360 when it comes to voice commands .... Microsoft refused to test the system with English words. Which is very funny since Microsoft is supposedly an American Company .... perhaps they out sourced that system to India as well ...
Has anyone tried the Xbox One's voice commands yet? I have older relatives who can barely use a TV controller and refuse to use a DVD player or ipad because they think it's too complicated. I'd LOVE to give them a Xbox One if it could allow them to use DVD's, Netflix, internet, etc. but they'll get frustrated if the voice support sucks.
You just need to glue flux capacitor to that thing and then hope you (don't?) get hit by a lightning strike.
My eyes reflect the stars and a smile lights up my face.
This
So if you go around a friends house would their Xbone start logging your face and wanting you to make an account?
Fuck that. I wonder how many criminal it will catch?
My next-gen console will go on a shelf under my TV next to the much larger black box of my home theater amp, on the shelf above the crusty 80s VCR that I still have for some reason. Looks fine to me.
Socialism: a lie told by totalitarians and believed by fools.
You'd think after the last console's production debacle, they would do better than providing 16-20 non-prepurchased consoles to each store. XBox purposely made the release such that many people can't pick up a console anywhere near the day it was released. Don't think they couldn't have done better - this is release. It may create hype around getting one - but it really just enables people to buy them and resell them on eBay along with potentially losing a customer altogether. Hmmm, let me take another look at that PS/4 while I wait. Morons.
That's not really all that true any more. Even the 'normal' A/V equipment these days comes in slightly varying form factors, forcing you to play Tetris trying to get everything to fit in the console.
I don't have a ton under the TV, but the only thing that's 'standard' sized is the old receiver I bought 10+ years ago. The cable box is close, but deeper. The Bluray is some idiotic wide but shallow size (wtf, why? You're mostly air! Be a better shape!). The 360 is somewhat close to the cable box, but again, different. The Wii? The Roku? Just shove those little things into whatever voids you can find.
Give me square, standard sized boxes I can stack (with vent space, naturally). None of this 'ha ha, try finding a place for this Wii under there' bullshit. Manufacturers can stand out by making a solid product. I don't need the 'branding' that the shape of your product brings to my living room.
Culture is more than commerce
The rounded look is quite dated now. Modern cars and phones are getting more angular again. It's the same thing that happened going from the 70s to the 80s, only faster. Even fashion is keeping up, and most modern pop music sounds like it was performed by a Commodore 64/ZX Spectrum combo.
Presumably next we have 90s style baggy phones and trousers, in garish colours and with a ringtone consisting of a cheap synth piano and a sample of a woman shouting "come on!". I think even Microsoft are in on it, getting rid of the start menu so they can re-launch it Windows 95 style. It will even blue screen when you plug your scanner in.

One of the reasons I love old A/V equipment is they were standard size. Besides, 1970s Marantz/Luxman audio stuff looks and sounds really nice (besides being nearly indestructible). Bring back silver brushed metal with knobs and analog vu meters.
I've got better things to do tonight than die.
You can bet sales of both consoles are going to be disappointingly low until the companies snap out of their stupor and realize people want to see NEW and FUN games that they haven't played before. That means taking serious risks with investment money. There's no way around it.
Within a free market (Capitalism) you can volunteer to join socialist groups. For instance, I'm a member of an insurance company that takes care of members who have fallen on bad times because their house was damaged by weather or in case of the death of the breadwinning family member. Anyone can join as long as they're willing to contribute in their good times (pay their monthly bills) in return for being helped in the bad times.
However, in a nonfree society (Socialism) you cannot 'opt-out'. The people in power use force and threat of violence to take from you so that they can feel like they're being charitable with your money.
As for the Tea Party, there are many who are very much Libertarians and their rallying call is "Don't tread on me"
I miss my freedoms. You may not, but I do.
not to mention that the PS4 has an internal power supply, where the XBO has a massive external brick.
Nor do combo BD/DVD drives for PCs support game discs pressed in a highly nonstandard manner to thwart piracy. Years ago, I tried a GameCube disc in a standard CD/DVD-ROM drive to see if I could inspect files the way I had done with CDs for the original PlayStation. It failed to read, and I would later learn that this was because GameCube discs had differences in the sector layout (analogous to the difference between normal CD-ROM and XA Mode 2 form 1) and in the formula used to generate the whitening seed. My conjecture was that Sony would use the space in the drive's firmware that would have been used for CD for the nonstandard format instead.
This one was just a pun on "drop", which is nearly an auto-antonym.
