If you are interested in reading about the recent redesign of how our desks are set up, you can do so here. Thank you all for your patience, and happy new year!
Yes, I'm just DYING to know about your desk redesign, I can hardly wait. Faaa
At the risk of sounding like a grammar Nazi... How do you expect anyone to take you seriously when you can't even SPELL the word you're trying to use? It is "ALLUDE" not "ELUDE" (that would be when one is trying to evade capture).
Really. Think about it this way: Try your luck getting a job and saying, "I ain't got no ___.... " (fill in the blank). Do you really think you're going to get hired?
I sure as hell wouldn't hire you if you made such a basic error. Think about it this way: we have ALL made an agreement that we will communicate in this language called English. If you can't learn the rules, get the fuck out.
When I was young Republicans wanted a less powerful government who couldn't regulate anything. Why is there a call by three Republicans for more government control? Do they not remember the values of their party?
Maybe they only want a powerful government when it's convenient for them?
Not when *nix for eons has had multiple desktops to divide up your work projects et al. For me, I keep my browser on one (albeit in tabs), comm on another (email, IM, etc), terms on another, and have another just for random programs I don't use all that often (GIMP, PDF Viewer, etc).
How can tabbing windows of different apps be any better than just alt-tab switching them?
Thankfully, I'll be done with my 2 years in 2011. If Android has the same share of apps that iPhone has, I'll get to make a hardware and moral (F/OSS) choice.
Interesting. You make "moral" choices based upon... the length of your cell phone contract.
Allow me to say, this is the 1st I've heard of these cameras, so no surprise there's no public outcry. There will be now, at least from this part of the public.
"If you've done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear."
"Yea, really? If I've done nothing wrong, WHY ARE YOU WATCHING ME?"
On a side note: I've bought beer at the store (Jack Bauer) they mentioned - never again!
Side note 2: The article mentions getting someone getting busted for drinking beer in Farnum Park. I, too, have drank beer in Farnum Park, on numerous occasions, the last time just last Thursday while playing basketball. Or...wait...actually it was brandy.
I want to say, "you can't be serious!" but I'm afraid you are.
O'Reilly isn't a news guy, he is up front about being on the opinion side of the line.
Up front? Really? What exactly does he mean then when he says "No Spin Zone"? Sounds to me that he's trying to come off as "objective."
...Fox is guilty of having their entire primetime lineup all partisan talking heads. Just like CNN. The difference is Fox doesn't demand their hosts hide their biases...
What do you think they're trying to say with their _constant_ diatribe of "We report, you decide" and "Fair and balanced" Really, you're trying to make us believe that Fox does _not_ try to come off as objective when, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth.
Don't get me wrong: they are ALLOWED to be biased. They are even allowed to LIE about being un-biased. But, when they prove themselves to be liars as they so fervently do, they lose any respect. Why anyone would have any faith in news from an organization that lies SO obviouisly is baffling.
Then again, they probably agree with your pre-existing bias.
I've not posted to/. in eons. Hell, I barely even read/. these days. But I feel compelled to comment on this issue.
Several years ago a girl who I'd kicked out _6 months_ prior decided to file a PFA (Protection From Abuse order) against me. Being that this was a "legal" matter, it was required that I had to be served notice of it by the Sheriff's department _in person_. Aside from the humiliation of having my neighbors witness and wonder why I was being confronted by these law enforcement officers, I was also subjected to some really silly nonsense like them taking my Swiss army knife away (still haven't got that back).
Anyway, the notice alleged chiefly that due to my physical abuse of her the police were called to our home on numerous occasions and that she had to be treated in the ER several times due to injuries I'd inflicted. "Haha!" I thought; if ANY of this were true (which it wasn't) there would certainly be a paper trail (police reports, hospital records, etc.) "I'm gonna make this bitch look SO stupid when we go to court."
Yea, right.
The ONLY time I was able to open my mouth during the "proceeding" was when my jaw hit the floor when I was "sentenced." I spent the next 9 months attending anger management classes and drug and alcohol counseling AT MY EXPENSE.

And the best part: when a criminal background check is run on me, that will ALWAYS show up. In perpetuity. Nice, eh?
There's so much more I could say on this subject, but I think you get the drift.
Last little twist: her email address at the time was ***peace2u@***.com WTF!?!?! PEACE TO YOU!?!?!?!
The heart of the matter is that when Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity lie about something, no one is yet able to mod them down.
That is not only an amazing generalization but also fundamentally incorrect. Both of the people you mention are fundamentally pushers of opinion. There is very little in terms of opinion which meets the definition of a lie.
This is where I have to call you to task. IF the 2 gentlemen in question were _only_ "pushers of opinion" AND were HONEST enough to admit so, that would be one thing. The reality is that they both have a constant diatribe of being "fair and balanced" when, in fact, they are not.
Perhaps they believe (and they could very well be right) that their repitition of a lie will influence the masses.
You do know, don't you, that we've always been at war with EurAsia.
/me looks around to see if there are any Linux gurus here:)
Check it out. Contribute if you like. My motivation in starting it in the first place was to learn enough to pass the exam myself, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'd give Morphix a look. While I personally have never gone ahead and installed it, I do know that the hardware detection for the live cd is good. And supposedly it's a snap to install once you have the live cd up and running.
Can I use Morphix as a easy Debian Installation CD? Yes, its one of the quickiest way of getting a Debian Linux systems installed.
There is an icon on the desktop for every GUI-based mainmodule. Try it, and follow the questions!
For screenshots: check the Gallery, or ftp://dl.xs4all.nl/pub/mirror/drupal/Morphix/s cree nshots
The installer is also available in the Morphix submenu. In LightGUI 0.3-6 the icons have been deactivated, but the submenu can be accessed via the submenu next to BabyTux, or mascotte:)
Several good points in your post: This is why many migraine sufferers have 'aura' or weird visual effects
Caffeine is a vaso-constrictor, meaning it makes your blood vessels contract.
One word: antihistamine
More commonly know by the brand name, Benadryl
It works. When I first experience my "aura" my first reaction is to take Benadryl IMMEDIATELY. Having done that, IF (and that's a big if) I can lie down and fall asleep I can "beat it" (beating it to me means being in pain for 6-8 hours. losing is agony for 14-18)
- *Not* drinking caffeine (a painkiller) means that now I feel the migraines I've apparently been getting for a few years (according to my doctor).
There's no pretty way to say this: you are WRONG.
If aspirin makes _any_ difference whatsoever, you are NOT having a migraine. Bad headache? yea Migraine? no way
There are no adjectives to describe exactly how crippling a real migraine is.
You had to have your doctor tell you that you're having a migraine? BULLSHIT! Real migraines leave no doubt at all. None. When a migraine happens, it's not as if you may or may not notice it. When a migraine happens THAT IS ALL THERE IS. Can't run. Can't hide. It's got you, and there is nothing else in the world. Nothing.

Its an optical illusion, you are actually rolling downhill, but you look and it looks uphill, no amount of thinking its downhill dispells that.
You may (or not) be thinking of a place near Lewisberry, Pennsylvania - which is conveniently about 15 min. from my house:-) It is truly a mindfuck. I love taking people there and acting as if I don't know what's going on and freaking out when the car rolls backwards uphill (apparently), which only freaks them out even more!
I've heard it was featured on that "Unsolved Mysteries" show, but I dunno.
I use Debian for _all_ my desktops needs, as does my GF (smart, but she could give 2 shits about computers). I convinced a friend to put Debian on his home box, as his job at a large printing company has moved more from design et. al. to doing backups on their UNIX (forget the brand) servers and _minor_ admin, and this would help him do his job better (or, at the least, help him understand what he was doing).
Of course, he wants to keep a Win partition for a crutch, so after partitioning a doing a quick/basic install of 98 we start the install of Debian w/ the 6 floppies I'd d/l'd from debian.org. We hook his network card to my cable modem, install it, set up X, set up network, etc., no sweat. (Granted, he wouldn't have been able to do this w/out my help, but bear w/ me here).
For some reason (I forget) he left his box here and it's now been over a month. One day, out of boredom, I decide to get his vid card (3dfx) set up to get some reasonable resolution and the network card (3com) set up to share the internet connection as it is w/ Debian. Guess what? I couldn't get either of them to work! The monitor still displays 640x480 (kinda funny on a 21" monitor!) and I couldn't figure out how to even tell it there was a network card there. To me, the method(s) of installing the drivers just made no sense at all.
The point I'm getting to is that saying one install is hard relative to another does not take into account the relative knowledge of the person involved. The amount of time we spent installing and configuring everything in Debian (excluding download time) was probably less than 1 hour. I've literally wasted hours just trying to get those 2 standard cards to work in Windows.
Another thing I'd like to add is that about worked at "A Major ISP" for about 1.5 yrs about 6 or 7 years ago, and while I learned (and since forgot) the steps for doing such things, they still didn't make sense to me, even while I led people thru doing them (typical tech support there, eh?). It wasn't until after I left that company and started using Linux did I feel that I started to learn anything useful about computers.
While I don't believe that what you are actually trying to say is "once you've done 'bad thing X' you are therefore never qualified/able to do work in the field of 'solutions to X'", you (and others) do, IHMO, somewhat project the appearance of taking that position in your comments. So let me provide an example that dispels that premise.
In the field of addiction recovery, almost ALL the staff (paid or unpaid, trained or untrained) are themselves recovering addicts themselves. While one hasn't had to travel that road themselves to be a good counselor, it certainly does help greatly. In addition, it gains one credibility among the "clients". [I considered throwing in personal examples here but chose not to. Suffice it to say I do know of what I speak.]
While I concede that this example has a less than direct bearing on the topic of computer security, I thought it a worthwhile point to mention. Also, to that I would reply that in analogies brought up in other posts, "WTF does having a conviction for pot possession have to do w/ your ability to be a security guard?" (I'm sure we can all agree that sort of person shouldn't bother applying for that sort of job)
Anyway, just some food for thought. I'm kind of suprised I haven't seen this brought up already. Maybe it's just below my threshold (and I'm too lazy to switch it and scour the posts:-) )

Sure, you've got some guns to protect you from the "tyrannical" gov't and you and your pals decide it's time for a revolt.
