wow! how can you be such a mindless drone, i wonder? the RIAA always cites artist's interests when talking to customers and customer's interests when talking to artist. in reality, it is just the major monopoly-scam it appears.
they will die, just a matter of time. don't you think we would all be better off if artists could sell directly to customers, without 5 multinational corporations making a huge profit off of it?
RIAA: WHAT do you do for us??? WHAT??? WHAT?

  2. The Power of Crusoe on UPDATED: Transmeta's Crusoe Unveiled · · Score: 2

as i read through various sources, i could not help thinking "yeah, it is low power and translates code, but P3's have been translating code in hardware which must be faster".
What IS the Power of Crusoe? Why is it so fast?
/. made everything clear. here it is:

    1) Crusoe is so fast (almost equal P3) because the code morphing is done in software. software is slower per se, but it is a lot easier to use lots of memory for state caching, can be tuned easier, etc - all the reasons you would not want to have your average application program etched into silicone.

    2) the true power of Crusoe is that actual silicone development is completely independent of previous iterations. if the next-best-thing-after-VLIW gets invented, they can put it into silicone in no time flat, while all other processor developers can only watch from a distance. WOW. WOW. WOW.

of course, there is also small die size (read: cheap!) and low power comsumption. but these advantages pale in comparison to 2, above.

i think the whole challenge is probably more descriptive of what secret services do than they intended it to be. basically, you have to look at every page, all the source code and all the pictures. the rest does not take above-average IQ (ASCII code and binary numbers - how much smarts does that take? oh, and morse code...).
to sum up your future job: you will be sorting through all these documents we got from all kinds of sources and try to extract useful information for us. all i can say is:

infrared headlamps (and no, they are not in the caddy) would defeat the whole purpose, as incoming other cars would blind your IR just as visible-wavelength lights blind your eyes. on top of that: why would IR-headlamps go any further or be any stronger than halogen ones?
the cool thing about the IR solution is that it uses ambient IR - THAT makes it so good. IR headlamps would be useful only for stealth car drivers - maybe if you love spy movies, or if you think the government is out to get you... hmmm... or if you want to avoid highway patrols?!

i am very disappointed and dissatisfied with eToys for being the first large corporation that directly threatens artists (etoy.com) with a laughable but nevertheless expensive lawsuit.
your lawyers are very good - TOO BAD YOU CAN'T SUE CUSTOMERS TO SHOP AT YOUR SITE. customers can simply choose to go elsewhere.
so here is what i will do:
    1) i will never shop at eToys
    2) i will send email to all my friends to do the same.
    3) i will not buy your stock.

    we all know the facts:
etoy.com has been around long before eToys ever started.
etoy.com has refused your offer for big money.
eToys has no right whatsoever to shut down etoy.com.

the fight has just begun. and we all know that controversy is bad for business. so... give it up. call back the dobermanns. be nice.

this sounds like a "i hate these macs, they are not windows-compatible"-rant. you would not have "compatibility issues" if you used all macs, either, so that argument is just crap.
as for speed, i believe any time that the Athlon beats the crap out of you macs, but... what i would REALLY like to know is how linux performance compares on Athlon vs. G4. after reading a lot of insightful comments by john carmack, i am convinced that the slooow Mac-OS has a huge impact.

i love the Mac for its usability and style, but the technology is really 80s, and it shows. points in case:
    1) the Mac virtual memory management SUCKS/is non-existent. it is a joke. super-slow. slows down all applications significantly. swaps even when there is enough physical RAM. in short: forget it.
    2) Mac File I/O is outdated and a lot slower than windows/linux File I/O. On top of that, there is NO write-back cache for the harddisk. it is all write-through! try running windows with write-through. horrible.
    3) Mac graphics "accelleration" is synchronous! this means the CPU has to wait for the graphics card on every paint to the screen! can you imagine what kind of processing power is idle in the G4 "supercomputer" while it is waiting for the gfx card. for example: on windows the CPU tells the graphics card "draw that box", then immediately continues. on the mac, the CPU says "draw that box" and then twiddles its thumbs while the gfx card dutifully paints the box...

on more thing: in our office, the G3 is actually more than twice as fast as the PIII running SETI @ home program. try that on your athlon :-)

it is your good right to tell them - along with the jew/racist/whatever jokes you might also enjoy. i would not stop you. as long as i have the right to say loud and clear that i find them both disgusting and unfunny. and that, if i were to stand next to you telling such jokes, i would like to lose my lunch all over you.

  13. Re:How about just using crypto? on October 21 is 'Jam Echelon' Day · · Score: 1

jarv, this is not the way encryption works. no one can crack a large enough key. i seriously doubt they can crack even a 1024 bit key, let alone a 2048 long key. the keys get *exponentially* harder to crack.
it would take my home computer a billion years to crack the 1024 bit key (brute-force, that is). if their computers are a billion times faster, it still takes them a year.
plus, if i add a bit to my key length, it would take them twice as long. so it is a matter of effort: the race stays even when the cracker doubles his computer power, and i add a few puny bits to my key length. just to stay on the safe side here, i choose to add 1000 bits to my key length. no one can crack it.
and just for the record: the Echelon is not some fantasy of weirdo paranoids. the European Parliament has officially acknowleged its existence - ALL communications between the US and europe pass through echelons servers - e.g. not just email and packets, but also phone conversations. i seriously doubt that anyone can actually do anything with this amount of data - but i don't doubt they have the machines to process it all.
