And in that vein I think he's taking Amazon's business model to its logical conclusion.:(
I can't think of a situation in which one monopolistic and self serving business is better than a myriad of smaller firms that actually have to compete. These publishers separate the wheat from the chaff with authors (in theory). If every single author tried the self distribution model, the signal to noise ratio with Hogwarts fan Fiction and Tolkien ripoffs would drown everything out.
The NBA basically strips this guy of his property over something he said... Yeah I'd be absolutely amazed if the team was sold to anyone other than a minority, or consortium of minorities.
In other words the correction swings the pendulum too far in the other direction.
it's more like the recreational activity which they can engage in and stand zero risk of getting arrested, losing student loan eligibility, and being denied the opportunity for a proper job -- oh and I guess working for the FBI.
it was a bullshit article, with a bullshit point, that shouldn't have made it onto Creed's thoughts (oblique reference to 'The Office') let alone on Slashdot.
Headline: People enjoy smoking pot while engaging in leisure activities. Headline 2: Young people often have the copious amounts of free time and lack of responsibilities that enable playing video games and/or smoking pot.
Neither of these are newsworthy, or interesting at all.
The following exposes would be equally fine examples of journalistic... something. - Drinking beer at a bar, while playing pool. - Old men in tiny cars and ridiculous hats playing golf while smoking cigars. - Fat bald men bowling while sipping budweisers.
The one purpose i can see something like this being used for is as a HTPC. Thank god all of the movies i'd download or rip come in 864x480 pixel resolutions.
Really cool idea, but sheesh -- up the form factor just a wee bit to make it more useful?
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely hate the entire CONCEPT of the H1B program. What got me was the implication by Waters/Jackson (and calling him a Reverend is laughable) that the ONLY reason they'd not hire more blacks is due to racist hiring practices.
While there are a few reasons for not hiring Americans in general, and black Americans in particular -- is racism among them, considering they scour South Asia for candidates?
Basically I think that companies like FB and Google are acting in the most socially irresponsible way imaginable. Rather than actually investing in their country (IE, find smart HS / College kids and train them) they'll go to any lengths to just import the indentured servants to do the work. The amount of money they'll spend lobbying congress to protect their supply of indentured servants.. is that greater or lesser than the cost of instituting an 'apprenticeship' type program?
I'd rather have slightly higher prices, and a diverse selection of sources for books (or any good really) Than see the Walmart or Amazon effect completely take over.
As much as I hate Facebook (and merely strongly dislike Google) why is this an issue? The implicit assumption behind this seems to be that diversity can only happen if you get people who look different in the same room. and that's nonsense.
These are both companies that are chomping at the bit to hire h1b's who are expressly non-white and hail from overseas countries. (The fact that they get to work as indentured servants with lower than average wages is another discussion). It's not as if it's a good-ole boy's club over at the googleplex.
If google and facebook could find qualified black (or American employees in general) employees, wouldn't they do that rather than importing people from India/Pakistan/$wherever? Implying that these companies are racist because they aren't hiring many blacks says less about facebook or google -- and more about our country. (or more accurately about Maxine Waters and Jesse Jackson playing the race card constantly to stay relevant.. )
because the 'spent' fuel has significant potential to be reused in a thorium reactor. Ideally wherever we decide to store/contain 'waste' currently, we want it to be accessible in the future.
Please correct the layman's understanding, but it's not dissimilar *in concept* to refining crude oil into gasoline and disposing of the diesel, kerosene, and all the other non gasoline parts of the stack?
new business plan: buy up cheap quartz wrist watches in bulk. (backup plan, raid the spice rack at Safeway). develop time machine. sell watches to sailors.
Had to look around a bit; but even the top end model only has an intel 4400 for video..
But, if it weren't for that (and the 2k price tag on the top end model) I'd pick one up. And I'd even look past windows 8.
It could easily replace my ultrabook and my tablet, and when on a docking station, my desktop (though again, the lack of a proper video card would probably hold it back).
Of course, this is what they're going for with it in the first place
"Use our product in a way we don't like, and we'll get you."
The fact that they look like the good guys in doing this, is irrelevant. Should that kid (dvdjon i believe?) have been sued over cracking CSS? or Geohot(sp?) for the Playstation hackery?
They aren't selling blizzard's code or product; just a product that lets people behave like jerks. (to cheat is to act like a jerk, of course) Enabling, or being a jerk is not illegal -- yet.
My experience has been the complete opposite with Roku (Roku 3). Compared to the ransom that the xbox wanted for access to amazon prime/netflix, and various HTPC setups that were never quite 'right', the Roku has been awesome.
(I think I might have gotten Plex on the Roku before they started charging for it, I forget -- but either way, would have been well worth the ~5 dollars for it.)

Ah, I'm from Oregon. But lived for 18 months in AZ. By my reckoning it was baking 10 months out of the year :)
Flagstaff seemed nice though since it has 4 seasons, and not nearly the sprawl and traffic of PHX.
Being in Arizona is never a plus. (other than flagstaff perhaps.)

become incredibly proficient at whistling, save money.
if something has significant future economic value, your storage should be reversible. how is this not common sense?

just hope that whatever storage/containment tech is used doesn't render the material unusable for fuel later on.
Sounds like someone works in IT, has a super cushy job -- but is too god damn entitled to realize how easy they have it.
Or, you're a simpleton who has no idea what he's talking about. Hard to say.

wasn't that only useful for finding the latitude? accurately finding longitude wasn't really possible until accurate clocks/watches were developed?
Yeah I was going to say; how much extra do you have to pay for him to berate you over a triviality?
Only the deaf and blind will be free at that point. (rather than just the proles and animals.)
I think it sets kind of a nasty precedent.

True, but those other traits let people see and then exploit the two you mentioned.
Regardless of how you feel about the cloud, her story is pretty inspiring.
Goes to show what you can accomplish with some motivation and hard work (And a genius level IQ probably doesn't hurt either.)
I foresee a future in which black tape or other opaque adhesive objects will be used to blot out the ads. Maybe I should get a patent..
"a device which obscures the user from seeing mind-numbing and intrusive advertising on products which have already purchased"
Google can shove their ad-laden future straight up their collective asses.
