  1. That would be YOUR president, since my country doesn't have one.

    I have a hereditary monarch! :)

Who, if she decided to not allow a law that my parliament had decided to pass, would very quickly find that we decided to become a republic...

Hence Big Liz is a bit of a rubber stamp.

But yes, your concerns are valid, for USAnians.

I do quite like your comment: "You can lead a sentient to skepticism, but you can't force it to think for itself."

The rest of the world is looking on with interest at both Brexit and the followup - "hold my beer" Trumpism - of the USA.

Good luck from a fellow colony of the British Empire!

And, please, don't start a nuclear war...

  2. "18 U.S. Code 2381 - Treason | US Law | LII / Legal ...
Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States."

Apparently that's the US definition of treason.

I'm not sure how you think that the media has been waging war or adhering to their enemies? Most of the MSM I read seem to think that Russia is actually unfriendly to the USA. Though the POTUS and family may think differently...

  3. ATM fees? People are charged for using an ATM? Weird... nice way to make money, though, I suppose, from people who don't just get cash out when paying for their groceries.

I had the same thing (quick boot into linux desktop) on a desktop PC, presumably I had the same or same family of motherboard.

I never used it apart from out of curiousity or to show disbelieving friends, but it worked.

I've used this PC for about 5 years now, so it was at least that long ago.

  5. Perhaps you could read TFA and follow some of the links?

Like the one to the wiki article of The Three Body Problem?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

The Wiki is quite comprehensive in plot, characters etc.

    Thanks.

  6. And the US health system is the most expensive for the least amount of health.

More than a couple of other nations have far cheaper and far better healthcare than the US.

The way it has been done in the past does not mean that it has to be the same in the future.

  7. Do they stay worked up an hour later? Or 12 hours later?

Because the study showed that they didn't. Some got worked up in the game, but calmed down within minutes, and where not changed over the long term.

And that's what the study was measuring, long term changes, not players getting worked up in a game.

  8. What about Puerto Rico? on 2M Americans Lost Power After 'Bomb Cyclone' (apnews.com) · · Score: 1

So, umm, how many Puerto Rican's lost power, how long ago, and how many are still waiting for power to be restored?

They are also citizens of the USA, you know.

And yet a quick scan shows no comments obviously comparing continental USA with island USA?

    Interesting.

So, how is Puerto Rico going, US friends?

Rick, you said there was no way you'd tolerate certain stuff in a vehicle you owned - and then you supply a list of stuff.

At first read it seems as though that's the stuff you don't want in your vehicle, but a second read indicates that the list is the stuff you DO want.

I'd not be blaming reading comprehension, but writing ability :)

I agree with you, I have no use for an internet connected car, or those internet speakers, a smart TV or smart device of any kind, really. Not yet, certainly, and probably not ever.

Oh, actually I do have a use for a smartphone, with wifi, bluetooth and GPS turned off until needed. They are handy cameras and with free national calls & texts are quite convenient ways to keep in touch.

[and now I can't mod anything on this thread, oh well]

  10. From Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iain_Banks) "Iain Banks (16 February 1954 – 9 June 2013) was a Scottish author" and "His first published science fiction book Consider Phlebas was released in 1987 and was the first of several novels of the acclaimed Culture series. " Hardly about a current political system of anywhere, let alone the USA. I mean, The Culture is a Utopia, for a start.

Uh... I experience cognitive dissonance when reading that comment and then reading that sig. Full disclosure, I read emails in text and have the option to view them in full html should I choose to do so. I can't imagine AMP being something I'd ever want to use, but I'm sure some people will love it. And no, I don't read emails in a browser, I have a standalone program for email. Gmail? Pfft, I have an Android phone so have a gmail address, only Google knows it as I've never used it and view it maybe once a year, if that. Hmm, preview shows this as one solid lump of text, not neatly divided into short paragraphs, let's see how it goes when I hit submit....
