All they need to do is to build PPC-Linux boxes, without Apple hardware. MOL (mac-on-linux) can then run OSX without the Apple hardware. It might not be the prettiest solution, but if you want a "homebrew" or "clone" mac, thats probably as close as you are going to get.

good point. Who only uses their watch for 30 minutes per day? Hell I only look at my watch every 30 minutes or so. The idea of combining two products (watch & PDA/Phone & PDA, etc) ceases to be a good one when the addition of the second product to the first causes the first to become largely unusable.

Its a cool idea, but I need a watc I can wear all day. Well, actually I don't wear a watch at all, I just look at the clock in my cell phone, which keeps its charge for days at a time! ha!

I have no problem with caluculators per se, but they shouldn't be used when teaching fundamental mathematics. Learn it the hard way first, so you actually understand what's going on, then use a calculator for actual applied work.

So you are saying that you can't understand math if you use a calculator? I would say that it would be easier to learn, or at least grade math when calculators are used. Think about it; if what you are really after is getting your students to understand the concepts, then why dissallow calculators that prevent them from getting incorrect answers from arithmatic errors ('oops, forgot to carry the 2' or some shit).

IAANAL (I Am Also Not A Lawer), but I pretty much would have guessed that to be the case. IBM has been known to make strange licensing deals in the past, like when they let Microsoft sell DOS to other hardware manufacturers, which was very unusual at the time.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Companies and their lawyers aren't so dumb as to try something they have no chance at. SCO's lawyers must have seen some clause in the documents that supports their ability to do this, otherwise they wouldn't waste their time.

This is certainly an interesting move. Their lawsuit either wins, and they make money from IBM, or they fail, but instead sell Unix licenses to all of IBM's AIX customers, who surely won't want to start from scratch.

I had an IT professor at Babson College who insisted that an employee that was only going to use a word processor and email REQUIRED a Pentium 4 with an 80 gig hard drive, etc.

I argued with him over that. His argument was that the more expensive computer would "last longer" because it would take longer before it became "obsolete."

I told him that if "it ain't broke, don't fix it. " Or, in other words, it would make just as much sense to buy the cheaper computer and simply not upgrade to the latest versions of Windows and Office whenever they come out. If the employee only does "basic" tasks, as described, any old software will do, and the hardware itself doesn't get slower over time.

Anyway, he still insists he was right. He also doesn't know the difference between a Pentium and a Celeron processor. I transferred - best thing I ever did.
