This sounds good. I'm looking into portable systems, and i will Hopefully get one this summer sometime. I used to use MacOS 7 at school alot, so i got kinda used to the interface. I don't mind lugging the extra weight around (not that i travel alot, just enought to want a portable.) If Ido buy one, i definitly want OSX, because it is Unix based (stable and pretty:-)
I am also looking into the intel laptops, but they aren't "alternative" enough for me, and, besides, i hear its a pain to install linux on them (or other alternative OS's).
Seems like the only way to get rid of this kind of government techno-megalomaniacism, is to get some people in office that REALLY know what they are talking about.
That is why I am proposing that Rob Malda, or another hacker run for president. We could even form our own political party, the Slashdot Party. And our candidates can be telling the truth when they take credit for supporting open-source, and helping the growth of the internet!
what kind of Unix stuff can you volunteer to do, and where? That would be great for me, because i have to volunteer for school, and I absolutely love Unix/Linux/anything but windows.
how is the Powerbook G3? I'm considering buying one. But I have a few questions first...
1)will it run linux (redhat-intel) on the free copy of Virtual PC? 2) will it run OSX or Darwin 3)is it fast? 4) am iwasting my time? (if you think I am, give a better reason than Mac's suck, i don't care)
Now there's an interesting suggestion! But then again there will be "telesquatters" who will buy up "insert name".com for everyone's name, and they will charge exhorbitant prices for them.
I do believe that it was our current draft-dodging, coward-president, Billy Clinton, who has been sending troops all over the damn globe, even though he was afraid to go himself. The democrats, republicans, politicians in general in this country send troops to places where they shouldn't be.
If you want to go smoke-up, go ahead, but don't say the war on drugs is idiotic. The truth is that drugs are bad, in one way or another, and SOMETHING should be done to stop their abuse.
I believe that it was a republican (Forbes), who suggested that we repeal the income tax and switch to a flat tax system. It is the democratic candidates that wouldn't even suggest we switch.
The democrats support unemployment, large "big brother"-style government, and other liberal programs.
ZDNet is full of idiots, they can't figure out that "Anonymous Coward" ISN'T a person, its a group of anon. posters. You think they would get it when they realized that A.C. argues with itself. Oh well, not everyone is as smart as we are.
BTW, anyone who would PAY John C. Dvorak to write the crap he writes is someone i would LOVE to work for. (easy $$)
I will always have two computers, one runs only Windows (which i will use the open-souced windows on, when it is available). And the other is my "everyday" computer, it runs Linux. The Linux PC has always been more reliable, and it never crashed once (untill i tried GNOME). I use it all the time. If i need to use software that only runs on windows, i boot up my windows machine, otherwise everything is done under linux.
I was quite a windows fan, and i eagerly paid for Windows 95. Thats where things went downhill, Windows 98 was crap, why should i pay $100, for something i don't need? Because Microsoft says so? NO! So i bought a Linux PC, it was great.
Anyway, If MS does Opensource Windows, I won't "switch", i never did switch from windows, i never will have to switch back.
BTW, (now i'm WAY off topic> did any of you notice that almost all of the really good colleges out there, Suggest that the students buy Either Macs or Unix? I just saw the college edition of TIME magazine. Interesting to note the fact that Windows* isn't very popular in colleges.
I'm 15 years old, I consider myself a hacker because I am a computer enthusiast. I never built an Altair, or owned an Osbourne, my first PC ran MS-DOS, my dad bought it for me and my sister. It was a piece of crap compared to my current PC, but i spent hours using it, and writing BASIC programs.
The only time i have ever done anything Malicious is once during a computer class, I logged onto a Mac server as my teacher, because i wanted to see if i could guess her password (it was very obvious).
IMO, your view that all teenage hackers are destructive and evil is wrong. From my experience the teens that REALLY qualify as hackers, respect their computers as well as everyone else's. The "destructive" hackers you talk about, tend to reside on AOL, are idiots, and they don't respect their PC's. Now ofcourse their are exceptions, but those people can't even be called hackers. Would a Car enthusiast break the windshield of someone else's car for fun? No, and a REAL computer enthusiast (a hacker) wouldn't destroy someone else's computer.
who said the installation process for Linux is difficult? Redhat, Caldera, and Debian are EASIER to install than NT!
IMHO, the installs for Redhat and NT are about at the same dificulty level. The problem most people have with installing Linux is that they need to know what hardware the have in their PC. Most people don't know. Also, the reason obscure devices don't have Linux drivers IS BECAUSE THEY ARE OBSCURE!!! Obviously, people have been become so obsessed with having everything done for them, that they will completly overlook the power and stability of the Linux Operating System in order to have a cute little "start" button. Hmmm... looks like Kusnetsky learned about computers by reading "Windows 98 for Dummies". Which by the way, is a very good title, because you'd have to be an idiot to PAY for that crap.
I'm a newbie myself, but I took the time to read the manual, and anything else i could online BEFORE I EVEN ATTEMPTED TO USE LINUX Afterward i still had/have a few questions/problems, but i try to find out how to fix them first, before i ask someone else.
I also know the configuration of my PC, so that when I installed Linux, (and other programs) I can tell the installer any info it needs to know about my system (most PC users can't, thanks to Windows). Also, when I post to a newsgroup I don't do any of the following things:
1) Post five copies of a question/ 2) Put the entire body of the message in the subject line. 3) Use terms such as "thingy" or others 4) Post "test" messages
there will surely be Win32 implementations for Linux, possibly bundled with every copy of RedHat and the like.
Not on my PC. anything created by Monkeysoft, including their API's are evil, and i would never install that on my PC. But that is my opinion. Besides, Monkeysoft will just create a brand-spankin'-new API (Win64) Don't forget that Intel has a new 64-bit processor coming out that MS is writing a version of windows for.
If RMS and his ilk would just shut up and get back to work, the same recognition that they largely already have would continue and grow just as naturally as that of Linux.
This is very true, maybe if they would get to work, they could turn GNU/HURD into a great piece of software and EARN the recognition that they want. Linus Gets recognition for creating the Linux kernel (and BTW, the kernel is he OS, so the OS is definitly linux, not GNU/Linux) which is/was a really great job on his part, and he deserves recognition for it. GNU tries to steal recognition for things that they didn't do (eg. Linux, Xfree86, Lynx, & other "adopted software")
Debian IS the GNU's Linux Distribution. It is sponsored byt the GNU project, which is also why they gave in to calling it GNU/Linux. I only know one other distribution that calls itself GNU/Linux, and i think that is Stampede. I'm not sure though.

the name "openlinux" had to do (originally) with their original name for DR-DOS, which was OpenDOS (i think.) Although it wasn't very open.
what kind of Unix stuff can you volunteer to do, and where? That would be great for me, because i have to volunteer for school, and I absolutely love Unix/Linux/anything but windows.

For the same reason Corel decided not to use QNX on its netwinder PC's. Linux was better, and it got them in the news. (free publicity!)
I heard that the entire AOL service actually runs on Linux Servers, but the client only runs on Mac/Windows.
I've seen the IBM WorkPad (i think they called it that) and another one with a built in barcode reader.
The first time i hear that was from a column by John C. Dvorak, which means that it isn't true.
I believe compaq changed DEC Unix to Tru64 unix.
Now there's an interesting suggestion! But then again there will be "telesquatters" who will buy up "insert name".com for everyone's name, and they will charge exhorbitant prices for them.
Also, there should be a limit to mow many Domain names you can own.

Rob really doesn't post as much as the rest of us, so he gets moderated-up less. Also, it IS his site, so e can do whatever he wants.
Let the AOL-terrorists call themselves hackers, instead, you could be something else, like a slashdotter.

There are millions of others also.
actually, jesus died on good friday
I'm not, but hey, I guess its just cuz I'm used to windows getting screwed up without me even trying.
