    You seem to think that there is an implicit
    .us at the end of every domain unless
    you add another country code..
    This isn't true.
    .us is a top level domain,
    .com is another one, and .uk
    and .gov are others.

    The .us domain is partitioned by state,
    like .ny.us.. You can't register a .com.us.

    NSI took the registration from the registrar,
    they are just as responsible, IMHO.

    Why aren't they checking the data before they
    add it to the .com/.org/.net zones?

    You're right..
    The arbitrary limitation that we can only
    register into .com .org and .net is becoming
    indefensible.

    New TLDs are coming.
    Name.Space
    is running 500+ of them, and has been for 3 years.
    There haven't been any technical problems with
    the name service. It's just a political problem.
    You can switch to these nameservers to resolve
    everything from .art to .zone.
    • NS.AUTONO.NET 209.48.2.11
    • NS10.AUTONO.NET 206.86.247.30
    • NS1.AUTONO.NET 198.6.71.125
    • ROOT3.AUTONO.NET 195.11.229.188
    • NS8.AUTONO.NET 130.242.7.200
    • ALLADIN.DDS.NL 194.109.21.20
    • NS.RE-LAB.LV 195.2.100.2


    Name.Space will take registrations in these
    domains.
    These domains are probably going to end up
    in the root zone file eventually.

    Until that time, you get an entry in the
    .xs2.net domain, so it will be globally
    accessible as yourdomain.newtld.xs2.net.

    I've always thought that Thawte did
    a better job than Verisign. They are cheaper
    too, I believe..(though it's been a while)..

    They do NOTHING for you! They don't even
    make your site more secure...
    They are snake-oil salesmen, at best.

    My '99 Golf has DRLs too..
    I can 'turn-off' the DRLs and run dark
    by pulling the Emergency brake up to the
    first tick. The car thinks I'm parked,
    and the lights go out.

    The first tick of the emergency brake doesn't
    apply any (noticable) braking...(I hope)..

    Name.Space does the redirection for you. Use their dns411 tool.
    It is simply the best one on the net.
    www.dns411.com You can also transparently look up ARIN netblocks and all kinds of handle info. Available via command line with:

    $ alias swhois="whois -h namespace.org"
    $ swhois corenic.net

    it does contact handles, and IP netblocks,
    and auto-redirects the whois to the right
    registry for a one-click whois showing
    contact info..

    They have to pay NSI $19, not $70...
    NSI is still ringing their CASH register
    everytime someone registers a domain.

    to do all of their own marketing anymore...



    In fact, it's impossible to get a 'new'

    You can renew with anyone you want... NSI can't hold you prisoner... My company Name.Space would be happy to renew your domain registration.

    Name.Space is the company you're talking about. This company has been doing registrations for new TLDs for 3 years. The windows software you're talking about only changes your DNS to point to one of the many name servers that carry Name.Space's zones. The .com .org .net space is way too crowded, and NSI will have to open the root zones for these new TLDs sooner or later... So it's not just a novelty registration..

    I have a PalmIII, and I am
    constantly tempted to
    press the buttons with the pen,
    rather than reach a finger over..
    (Especially when I'm using it with one hand.)
    The pen just slides off of the buttons..
    With the PalmV, the stylus-friendly
    concave buttons are a subtle plus...
