What with the UK government wanting to force an ID card on us - seems applicable to Passports/Driving Licenses too.

Take a standard Credit Card sized plastic card.

Put a chip on it like credit cards use - not an RFID tag, just a simple chip that can store ONE piece of info.

That piece of data will be unique to that person, and is their ID in the system.

On the card we print a photograph, their name and date of birth.

When the card is presented at an appropriate terminal, a database lookup is done for the ID. The card reader then displays a "virtual" version of the card.

Visual inspection will allow the person doing the Identity Check to confirm the persons ID.

ID cards to be updated every 5 years, replacements for lost/stolen/damaged to be charged at cost, and be available within 2 working days, with designated places (like police stations) being able to print out temporary ID papers until replacement card arrives.

As long as downloads to terminals are encrypted, and the credentials of the operatives inputting data onto the system are checked, we have a secure system with no privacy concerns that SHOULD be cheap to implement.

Other systems, Passport Control etc could be tied to the database with your ID reference number becoming your Passport number - Give each person a pin number (or if you really insist use biometric information) and you have a bank/credit card that should also help prevent fraud.

Anyone see any holes in my plan?

Small venues, low ticket prices, a few nights a week.

Now it seems that the opposite occurs.

Once signed to a label it seems that a band releases an album, does a brief tour to promote, mass media marketing meaning that these tours are shorter and shorter.

They then sit back and wait for the money.

Think about it - how often do most big bands tour - once every 3 to 5 years maybe?

The records/cd's/mp3's should be the promotional material to get people interested in going to their performances.

That way we would have better music - after all, how many gigs have you gone to that a band sounded awful because they cant play without the benefits a studio brings.

Let us convert some of the theaters, cinemas and other large buildings into music venues and promote live music - a true performance worthy of reward, rather than soul-less recordings of multi-take playings of music

Iraq switched to trading in Euro's, 1st thing that happened when Iraq restarted oil production was the reversion to the Dollar - even tho this cost the Iraqi people 20% of the value of their oil.

The "Crime" - Computer System Trespass

From TFA (Well TFOL) this is explained well

Basically he says the server is for DIX use only and specifically for the BGP router network there, he then says only for these servers.

    ***** TFA Excerp below *****

Why D-Link needs to ask for permission

The public service of the GPS.dix.dk NTP server has been advertised in the NTP projects list of Stratum 1 NTP servers with the following text:

    DK Denmark GPS.dix.dk (192.38.7.240)
    Location: Lyngby, Denmark
    Geographic Coordinates: 55:47:03.36N, 12:03:21.48E
Synchronization: NTP V4 GPS with OCXO timebase
Service Area: Networks BGP-announced on the DIX
Access Policy: open access to servers, please, no client use
    Contacts: Poul-Henning Kamp (phk@FreeBSD.org)
Note: timestamps better than +/-5 usec.

You will notice two restrictions here, one is the "Service Area" and the other is the "Access Policy". D-Link makes no effort to comply with either of these two restrictions.

Since D-Link does not comply with these restrictions, D-Link has no legitimate access to the server, and it follows trivially that D-Link should have asked for my permission before including it in the list embedded in their products firmware.

This is still as cheap/cheaper than a single 512MB 7900GTX GFX card.

At the bottom of the price range it is the same as I paid for EACH of my 7800GTX's at the end of last year (I happened to find myself being made redundant with a decent payout, and managed to find a new job starting the day after I left my old one, so I decided to treat myself to a new toy with this "found" money)

So how is it hideously expensive?

Compared to the 360 it may cost more, but with 12 months in the field by the time the PS3 is available, I cant believe that anyone who wants a 360 will not have one.

As for the Revolution, well it will probably sell more than the PS3 or the 360 as many people will see it as a cheap, fun second console - a bit like I see my Gamecube now.

What would be more evil would be deciding that we know how the people of China should live, decide that their government is corrupt and or evil and then send in the troops.

Up until the point of the troops I agree - people should have more freedom than the Chinese enjoy.

However it is not right for us to apply our standards to another culture and decide that they should be like us.

Countries need to develop and grow at their own pace.

For example, while we in the UK think that we have a nice society, well just look at whats going on now - thousands of women being denied the treatment that our National Health Service promises due to something trivial like money. And if you go back in time about 50 years you will find that it wasn't possible for a man to rape his wife in the eyes of the law, being married equalled consent.

So lets let China and other countries grow up at their own pace.

If we don't like what they do then we can let them know that we dont like it in other ways - for example boycott China.

If Google want to go into China that is fine, and I think it is GOOD that they respected the local laws and Government, rather than forcing them to change their minds at gunpoint

This issue has been a topic of discussion between some friends of mine and myself, some are big Apple fans, some aren't, none are huge fans of windows.

The reason for Apple to turn to Intel rather than AMD could be that Intel can also provide them with a custom chipset.

From that, all you need to is write [NuAppleOS] to only run on that hardware and bingo, you have closed hardware Apples and no change to the Status Quo (and I don't mean that you are "Rocking all over the World")

You want to run Mac OS - buy an Apple - doesn't matter that it is now a Green Apple (Intel Processor) rather than a Red Apple (IBM Processor) sure it may taste slightly different, but hey, its still Apple.

In a lot of ways this would be Apple building and X-Box (OSX-Box anyone :P ), after all the X-Box uses standard(ish) commodity hardware, yet you cant run X-Box games on your Intel Processor.

So really, no real change to the end user.

Also there is some thought that perhaps IBM seeing the HUGE orders for Cell Processors for the PS3 alone have had to tell Apple that they cannot fab enough PowerPC chops for them - also the Laptop G5 issues that seem to exist may have given Intel an edge when approaching Apple.

All speculation and hearsay, but if you cant speculate and repeat hearsay on /., where can you.......
