I can't beleave no one has mentioned him yet. Piers Anthony has done a LOT more than the just juvinile fantasy.
The "Bio of a space tyrant" series is good, as is "Macroscope" and also "Ghost". "Ghost" is a bit mature for a young reader, and "Bio of a space tyrant" also deals with some mature themes. I'd suggest you read them first, and decide yourself if she is old enough to read them.
Also, his fantasy work is quite good, often mixing Science Fiction in. Read the Split Infinity series and it's sequels. It's about someone who lives on a world with a "Curtain" that allows him to cross from a Fantasy world to a Sci-Fi world, and its VERY interesting, although I'd say not for an immature audience either. I read them when I was 13.
And I have to agree with the people who have mentioned Robert A. Heinlein, whom never published a bad book in my opinion, and also John Varley's "Steel Beach" which is one of the best books I have ever read, Sci-Fi wise. Nice tribute to Heinlein in the book.
You are forgetting something here: It takes the Windows team a LONG time to fix a bug like this, making it a serious issue! When the last DoS attack was discovered against Linux, it was fixed in just over 8 HOURS. NT? 6 weeks, from first posting on Bugtraq.
That disparity makes the case here. It IS a big deal on Win2k. It's not a big deal on Linux, because a fix WILL be out in less than a day.
If you want to bother to get that right, it should be *cough*RED HAT*cough* since they did that BEFORE Slackware, and were the main reason that Slackware did that in the first case.
Solaris is no different in this instance. It's still a good thing. What F*&*ing difference does the number make? CAN YOU USE THE D$$$ THING OR NOT?
But hostile environments will present a worsening problem for e-communities until the notion of taking responsibility for one's own words - even online - takes hold. So far, it hasn't
Nor will it Jon. The Internet is about free exchange of ideas - true information freedom. Along with this baby we got it's dirty diapers - this doesn't mean we throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Online, we lack several things that prevent us from being rude in person - accountability does not exist online. This allows us to be loose and free in what we say, more so than we would face to face with another human being. On a deep deep level, we're all afraid to insult someone like this face to face for one reason: FEAR. Fear of reprisal, fear of loss of credibility and respect, hell - fear of getting physically smacked for being an idiot in some cases! We don't have these fears online, and it shows in our missives! This is not indicative of some new culture of angry flamers, it's indicative of HUMAN NATURE when certain restraints on our behavior are lifted.
Then why did they tell us that we were paying to ship the drives to them in the first place? If WD couldn't be professional enough to inform the people in it's call center that people calling in with recall drives didn't pay to ship them back to WD, then how can I trust they will get anything else right? Fujitsu has yet (as far as I know, I'm now doing help desk somewhere else) to do something this brain dead. I'll never buy another WD drive.
I certainly wouldn't use WD's for mission critical production servers.
I used to work at a computer company in the St. Louis, Mo area. We used WD drives exclusively. We got word that they had "oops"'d and that we have 30 to 50 IDE drives that we had to ship back to WD - AT OUR COST - even though it was thier defect. Needless to say, we switched to Fujitsu and never looked back, simply returning the drives and demanding a refund.
It's VERY important to note that "Official" work about the CSC keyspace being over 100% was ALREADY explained!
It works like this: D.Net rechecks blocks from suspicious clients. D.Net rechecks they by handing out those blocks again. D.Net has said repeatedly that they give full credit for EVERY block handed out in this way from the keyservers. AS SUCH it's easy to have the total go over 100% - this had NOTHING to do with the server problem. The article posted does not make this clear, and should be revised!
Hey Rob, howabout that tarball! Oops... Another 24 hours now...
I think just as suitable is don't do it the way they want you to... Setup an Internet only 95/98 box using something like Sygate which I've used for years, and pipe the connection to your other machines! Let the "Server" sit there with the DSL modem and such, and let it look at banner adds all day long. Use the net as normal via the other machines.:-)

This is a clear-cut case where a short comment, while perhaps not necessary, was CERTAINLY relevant. Why punish him for making a good point? Knee-jerk moderation is NOT the way to go people. If I'd had some moderator points left, he'd been bumped back up. Bumping him down was wrong. "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain

Bzzzz! Wrong! Thank you so much for playing! Don Pardo, please explain to today's guest contestant why he's lost!
DP: Why sure Scott! It's because US Courts DO have jurisdiction over what happens within their Jurisdiction! No matter the medium used, an act is an act. If that act is in violation of the law, it makes very little difference if the medium is speech, fax, telephone, letter, etc. The above statement is only correct in that US courts don't have jurisdiction over what people do on Usenet OUTSIDE of the US!
IANAL of course...:-)

Not to be redundant here, but there is a good reason that the client source is closed.
The client source is closes so that some clever programmer doesn't write a client that tells HIM what the winning key is first, allowing him to submit it to the RSA and walk off with the entire 10,000! This would NOT be good!
The CORE to the client IS open source - you can even compile it! If you want to know EXACTLY what your machine is doing, download the core source at http://www.distributed.net/source/ and check it out for yourself! While you're there, could you write a core for the K7? I've looked at it, but it's a tad beyond my meager programing skills.
Open Source IS the coolest thing since sliced bread to be sure, but it's NOT the answer to everything in the whole wide world. This is a clear exception to the "Open Source is Better" rule.

While the other two responders to your post have made good sense, I think they miss the point: The CORE is open source. You can see what the client is doing, exactly. The CLIENT is closed so that you can't trap the winning key, turn it in to the RSA yourself and collect the whole 10,000 - leaving D.Net out in the cold!
Open Source is the answer, just not to this question... "I have no respect for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain
the absense of capitalism (poor markets cause poor pay, not the factories providing the jobs).
I'm sorry, but this is pure fantasy. China does not use political prisoners to make shoes and toys because they have poor markets. They do it because they can, and because they MAKE MORE by not paying that part of the labor force. They have an excellent market. Walk into ANY Payless Shoes in America, and find ONE pair of shoes that ISN'T made in China.
The same type of problem exists with the SCSL. Sure, you can look at the source, and write your own extensions - and then PAY SUN for the privilage of writing software for them - because anything you write THEY OWN!
I see very little difference between the two.
