Why don't they bring back RoboTech? That was the most kick ass series when I was a kid. I wish they'd bring it back - the original ones, with Min Mae and Rick Hunter!

More importantly, our government has what I like to call the Anti-Midas touch - what ever they put thier hands on, turns to shit. This will be no different.

What if, for instance, we used this as a platform to build a ship that didn't have to survive atmospheric contact? We could build something REALLY big from here, and use it to jog from here to Mars - or even to the asteroid belts. *I* for one would love to know what's out in those belts. They could be a PHENOMINAL source of raw materials for us. Just think how much water could be out there? We could latch onto a big big (think small moon sized) chunk of ice and slam it into Mars - viola! Instant water vapor for an atmosphere! There are other applications as well!

... they have what's called "at will" employment. This happened to me at SBC Communications last year. EVERYONE on my floor had MP3's, but my computer had the misfortune to get scanned, and viola! 4 days before christmas, I'm out of a job. WW is right above when he points out that this only happens at the most fascist companies, but they DO have the best benifits. Standard offer at Bell was 43k for a entry level 1st level mgr with other compensation that brings the value of the package (which I have a copy of, as my wife was made just this offer in the same department) to about 61k for the first year - a package that most other companies (think small to medium) have a hard time matching.

So, people WANT to work there because the pay is good, the opportunities are excellent, the benifits are beyond par - but the security is draconian, the policies unclear and termination occurs without recourse.

Go read Dilbert. Scott Adams came up with Dilbert while working at PacBell, which is owned by SBC.

  18. Re:Why Gasoline? on Why Do We Still Use Gasoline? · · Score: 1

A lot of this is due to manipulation of the governement by big business. The MAIN reason we buy oil from overseas is so the oil companies don't have to pay hard working americans to drill it out of the ground. I know this for a fact: I own mineral rights in Texas, and you can BET I'd have some good cash right now had gas shot up any higher than it did. I couldn't understand why we weren't drilling already, but it's NOT that it's that much more expensive to get it here, it's that the cheep ass oil companies don't want to share the wealth so to speak with the people.
