I am not sure dumping them in the deep end of the pool is the correct idea either.
A lot of us learned because we had machines with basic that needed games. Get a magazine and type in a page or two of code and you had some garbage game to play. You see code and you get some reward, plus you appreciate the need for accuracy and precision.
Later, we moved on from rote copying to actually doing our own problem solving / coding. I know I had no context at first, I did not know what I could and could not do but it took years to learn.
It scares me that kids are growing up without any clue what is "under the hood" at all. No appreciation for the complexity of what is going on. Personally, that is why I promote FLL competitions. They get kids thinking about complex problems and using computers (and robots) to solve them. They can get something going with the simplest of instructions. If they want to dig in more, they can do crazy stuff as needed. And the payoff is there.
Stupid Chrome won't allow you to make and exception to accept invalid certs.
My webmail provider won't get a valid cert, so I have to click through every time to get to my mail.
Firefox you can add an exception if you trust the cert. Chrome decided to not allow this, despite many pleas to do so.
I tried to manually add the cert, but something somewhere is wonky with my flavor of FC. Plus, who wants to run command line scripts to add some silly cert? Just give me a multi-click-through like firefox. From reading up, the FC folks blame chrome and chrome blames FC.
I really don't get it. If you publish a list with locations of all the local crack houses and prostitute hangouts or even call-girl numbers, can you go to jail? Piratebay does not host content, just tells you where to go.
They are going after the wrong folks for the most part.
They do modular homes in the US too. Not your typical mobile home, they can look like a normal home but they are factory made. Not sure on record times for deployment...
We just did our 20th and FB actually helps promote the event and track folks down.
Yes, you already know a lot about what is going on if you follow the FB stream. So I knew more about a lot of folks that I never really socialized in HS with. But I also knew what my circle of friends had been up to, so we did not have to spend so much time catching up on "trivialities" so much.
Plus, I used FB to specifically target and encourage the folks I wanted to see IRL to be there. And it worked, a lot of them showed up.
Plus, I was pleasantly surprised at how everyone was basically "adult" now. No drama that I noticed. Everyone really seemed to want to be there to have a good time.
I sadly never had one, but I still dream about getting that or something similar.
For me, keypress depth is very important for touch typing. For some reason, I can't get into the crap apple type barely any depth for desktop keyboards. And not a single laptop other than the 100 had a "full depth" keyboard.
Maybe there exists a decent bluetooth keyboard for use with a tablet? I have not seen them, they are usually low profile.
-it is ok to fudge models after the fact as long as it still shows the trend you want, but we can certainly trust your models now
-it is ok to blame natural trends in the data as long as it supports your agenda, but there are no other natural trends to worry about
-it is ok to blame weather on climate change, but only the violent weather. Like hurricane predictions that never came through.
I especially like the way even the data gets massaged to show a warming trend. Look at GISS from 1999 vs GISS in 2011. That is supposedly "pure" data, not modeled data.
Mine is certainly useless. Any time I try to use google voice search I hold the phone close to my mouth and my wife yells "DROID WHISPERER!" and screws up the search as much as she can.
And I had a Treo smartphone that did more than the original iPhone, just with a crappy screen and less slick OS.
Treo vs original iPhone, Treo had: SD card, stereo bluetooth, MMS, video camera, cut-paste, open development, optional pen based UI, one-hand UI with 5way, changable battery, etc.
There was nothing revolutionary about the iPhone, it was all obvious evolutionary development with slick marketing. A shiny toy in a walled garden.
I found fullscreen mode buried in options, thanks. However, the UI is still laggy for me.
The graphics are terrible! Gray on gray so you can't see what you are doing when you are placing pieces, icons that look like they were created by a middle school kid.
The whole thing has a feel of a really bad flash game that does not work quite right.
If this is one of the better games in this pack, I am sad that I gave them anything at all.
Space Chem has a idiotic UI. The mouse control is super laggy and you can't maximize the screen. It feels like a crappy flash game, but even flash I can scale in a browser.
The puzzles may be awesome, but if I can't get the controls to control, what good is a great puzzle?
I think a lot of them have moderated from full on "creationism" to "intelligent design" which really strikes me as directed evolution. Was it all just random, or part of some plan? They can pretty much coexist IMHO.
And no real-estate taken up by a chicklet keyboard. I love the kindle, and the geometry of the little one is just right for reading. However, the larger DX kindle has too much frame and wastes space at the bottom with a kbd.
Even apps from outside the market? PDAnet is not from the market and I have not seen a message about tethering. They also have a "stealth mode" to hide your usage, but I bet you can't hide the traffic pattern a laptop generates.
Would Tether + VPN on the laptop work?
Maybe I need to check and see if Verizon will let me turn on and off tethering easily. If so, I don't mind paying a little for that feature, but I doubt they make it easy or cheap.
Great book. One of my favorites.
For high g cargo it makes total sense, nothing too crazy required.
They assume 3g as a max. I bet you could do 6 pretty easy. Reading up, looks like if you are reclined it could be 10+ even for untrained folks.
I am not sure dumping them in the deep end of the pool is the correct idea either.

My PS3 does ok for movies and pictures. Plus it plays games and DVD / BluRay. And Netflix.
Why do I need one of these additional boxes? What am I missing out on?
This site is awesome! The Tech stuff just keeps getting better and better. I feel like I learn something every day!

Stupid.
One of my favorite books. Great quote. Thanks!

Igloo effect made it into my text books. I assume middle school texts are vetted by scientists?

I think Group is still open. I personally don't go bar hopping in Five Points too often, the Vista is a little nicer.
I hope my school buys up some names. We would have a legitimate concern for cocks.xxx
Go Gamecocks!
So the consensus view now is that:
-it is ok to fudge models after the fact as long as it still shows the trend you want, but we can certainly trust your models now
-it is ok to blame natural trends in the data as long as it supports your agenda, but there are no other natural trends to worry about

Hansen predicted doom unless we cut back on CO2 years ago:

What happened? No significant cuts yet 20 years later we are still well under his best case models.
Do they really know what is going on? Shouldn't models somewhat capture trends of the data?

First game tried: weak.
His style was always innovative and changing.

RIP Mr. Jobs
I think a lot of them have moderated from full on "creationism" to "intelligent design" which really strikes me as directed evolution. Was it all just random, or part of some plan? They can pretty much coexist IMHO.
I rsync all my pics to 3-4 machines periodically.
I also upload the good ones to picasa, so that counts as a partial offsite backup.
I also learned after yahoo pics went down to keep all the sorted/copied "good ones" in separate numbered folders in case I have to move my web pics.
And no real-estate taken up by a chicklet keyboard. I love the kindle, and the geometry of the little one is just right for reading. However, the larger DX kindle has too much frame and wastes space at the bottom with a kbd.
Who the hell has a low UID? Are you smoking something? Or did I miss a few million registrations?
Back in my hole. Get off of my lawn!
Me too. Jobs was expected, this was not.
Years and years of slashdot reading, and it feels like it may be ending. Or at least changing. Ouch.
And I have gotten email from Rob on some /. technical stuff here and there. Surprisingly responsive, considering he ran such a site.
